2 Dear Family of Peace. We have certainly been fortunate to have experienced unusual sunshine and warmth so far this spring season. It invites us outside to get a jump on things usually reserved for the summer. But it is still springtime in Montana. I m sure the weather man will remind us of that! I recently attended the LCMC Northwest District Gathering hosted by Calvary Lutheran in Kalispell along with Pastor Jeff, Misty and other members of PLC. It was a beautiful drive, the scenery was spectacular! A district in the LCMC is a collection of churches who voluntarily join together because of shared interest and/or geography. We at PLC have recently decided to join the Northwest District which encompasses congregations in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho and Montana. Quite a vast district indeed! Annual gatherings are used to help congregations get to know one another, share ideas and resources with each other. Each District elects its own council members made up of clergy and lay members from the representing congregations. Pastor Jeff was elected to serve in this capacity. The NW District also has a coordinator who acts as liaison between the District members and the National LCMC Board of Ministry. In this way, the ideas, issues and concerns of our local body can be considered nation-wide. The focus of our gathering time was on the topic of mental health. The keynote speaker was a Clinical Manager in the Sexual Assault and Family Trauma Unit at Lutheran Community Services Northwest in Spokane. He helped us see that mental health is a real ministry concern of all of our churches that must be addressed. We were empowered to see our role in being with those who suffer, to identify needs and resources in the community. The highlight of the gathering for me was getting to know the other congregational members who attended. It was so great to hear their stories and find out how these churches have formed. I feel that we have made some friends around the state and throughout the District. I encourage you to think about attending one of these gatherings in the future. Or, maybe we can host one at PLC? As we begin the month of May we see that many of our programs are coming to a close. Sunday school, Adult Forum, Confirmation, and Peace-Makers will be finishing up. Thanks for the many who have helped carry all these programs that have served us so well. As you look forward to the beginning of summer, may God grant you joy in knowing Him in new and fulfilling ways. Rejoicing together, Pastor Bob NEW EMPLOYEE We have completed our search for an office administrator. The position was offered to, and accepted by Laura Rost. She has been a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran in Polson and is looking forward to becoming a part of the Peace family. Laura is currently working on a degree in Music Therapy at MSU. She will begin an orientation with Sandi in mid-may. PENTECOST MEMORIAL DAY GERANIUMS The last day to place orders is Sunday, May 17. Make checks payable to PEACE LUTHERAN ALTAR GUILD, cost per pot is $4.00. 3 Brothers and sisters in Christ, No doubt about it- spring is springing into summer! The trees and bushes have sprouted their leaves. Pastures and lawns display their grass in a beautiful sea of green. Early perennial flowers are making their appearance. The sun is higher above our heads; consequently the weather has warmed considerably. Although on our calendars, summer officially begins on June 2, there is definitely a shift of seasons occurring already. This year, May is when a shift occurs in the Christian liturgical calendar also. Pentecost Sunday is May 24. After Holy Trinity Sunday on May 31, and through Reformation Sunday on October 26, the Sundays are all given the designation after Pentecost. The liturgical color for the season after Pentecost is green, emphasizing a sustained time of growth in our Christian faith and life. But it all begins with Pentecost Sunday. As a major Festival Sunday, Pentecost is ranked in importance by most Christians less than only Christmas and Easter. Pentecost is an ancient Christian festival- Paul writes of observing it at while he was at Ephesus (1 Cor. 16:8). Pentecost ("the fiftieth [day]") is the Greek name for the Feast of Weeks, a prominent feast in the calendar of ancient Israel celebrating the giving of the Law on Mt. Sinai. This feast is still celebrated in Judaism as Shavuot (meaning 7 weeks). Later, in the Christian tradition, it became a feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ as described in Acts 2:1 31. For this reason many Christians call Pentecost the "Birthday of the Church". The exact location of the descent of the Holy Spirit has been debated but most Bible historians say that because Pentecost takes place during the appointed time of Shavuot or Feast of Weeks, most likely the followers of Jesus were on the southern stairs of the Temple celebrating along with the other Jews who came up from their own countries. Thus, the disciples, who were "continually" in the temple courts (Luke 24:53) would likely have been in the temple on that day also. To further support a Temple location the Bible says that great crowds from every nation gathered to listen to Peter and the other disciples. (Acts 2:5) Peter said that it was 9:00 in the morning (Acts 2:15); the time of the Pentecost worship service in the temple. Thus, the crowds would have been in the temple at the time Shavuot ceremonies were conducted. And Acts 2:41 says that 3000 people were baptized in response to the teaching of the disciples. Near the Southern Stairs, the pilgrim entrance to the Temple Mount, were ritual baths used by the worshipers before they entered the temple grounds. Thus, it was a fitting place for the baptism of converts. (Acts 2:41) According to Christian tradition, Pentecost is always seven weeks after Easter Sunday; that is to say, 50 days after Easter (inclusive of Easter Day). So it falls on the eighth Sunday, counting Easter Day. The main liturgical sign of Pentecost is the color red. It symbolizes joy and the fire of the Holy Spirit. Priests or ministers wear red vestments, and in modern times, the custom has extended to the lay people of the congregation wearing red clothing in celebration as well. Red banners are hung from the altar and pulpit and even balloons are often hung from walls or ceilings to symbolize the blowing of the "mighty wind and the free movement of the Spirit. Symbols of the Holy Spirit such as the dove or flames are prominently displayed. Red flowers at the altar/preaching area, and red flowering plants such as geraniums around the church are also typical decorations for Pentecost services. These symbolize the renewal of life, the coming of the warmth of summer, and the growth of the church at and from the first Pentecost onward. Now, on May 24, here at Peace Lutheran Church, we probably will not have tongues of fire appear on our heads on Pentecost Sunday; though we could have if that is what God desires! But one thing is certain; the same Holy Spirit that fell upon Peter and all the other apostles and followers of Christ, has indwelled in us at our Baptism, and is with us every day of our lives. Nurturing and sustaining our faith and life just as it did the very first followers of Christ. This Pentecost, may the Holy Spirit of God the Father fill our hearts and minds with the truth and love of Jesus Christ, the Son so that our faith may grow and bloom as beautifully as do the flowers in our gardens. May the blessings of the Holy Spirit rest upon all of us, Pastor Jeff 3
