And Peace Lutheran has been involved for the majority of those years. This year's walk will be on Sunday, October 16 th, beginning at 1:45 p.m. at the Gallatin Food Bank in Bozeman. The proceeds from the walk will be used locally and around the world to alleviate hunger. If you are interested in being a "walker" or a "pledger," please see Jinx Sorensen. Those walking can meet at the church and car pool to Gallatin Valley Food Bank in Bozeman. 1

2 For faithful Lutherans, October is always an important month because the last Sunday in October is when we commemorate Reformation Sunday. Here at Peace Lutheran Church that same Sunday is also Confirmation Sunday. While the course materials and the ages of Confirmation students may vary between Lutheran congregations, the two basic components remain much the same: Bible Study and Martin Luther s Small Catechism.. Confirmation is a common thread for those of us who have been confirmed Lutheran and we take it seriously. Though for some of us it has been quite a while since our confirmation days! With that in mind, I thought it would be good to turn back the clock and offer all you Lutheran Alumni a little quiz to see what you might recall of Luther s Small Catechism. The answers will be posted elsewhere in this newsletter. I hope you enjoy this and good luck! 1. Lutherans observe 2 Sacraments. What are they? 2. What is the 8th Commandment? 3. How many articles does the Apostles Creed have and what is the subject in each? 4. On October 31, 1517 (the birthday of the Reformation) Martin Luther nailed what document to the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany? 5. What is the only commandment with a promise from God attached to it? 6. What is the corrupt and evil nature we have inherited called? 7. What is received in, with, and under the bread and the wine in Holy Communion? 8. True or False. Contrition means to be sorry for your sins. 9. Is it possible for an unbaptized person to be saved? Why or why not? 10. What two basic distinctions must we keep in mind in order to better understand the Bible? (Hint: Think of what God has done for us through Moses and Jesus.) 11. The Lord s Prayer contains an introduction, 7 petitions and a conclusion. What is the third petition? 12. What are the six chief parts of the Small Catechism? Bonus: For what purpose did Martin Luther write his Small Catechism? (find the answers hidden in the newsletter) Love in Christ, Pastor Jeff 2

3 Dear Family at PLC, October is a month of Outreach Opportunities! September represents the beginning of our Christian Education season, things that we do that invest in us. October gets us to look outside our church walls and the needs of our community. Let me highlight a few of them. Starting October 3 PLC will be hosting the Gallatin Valley Food Bank s Belgrade outlet. We have agreed to hold the weekly distribution of food to families and individuals in our community in our church facility. It is open to anyone in need to pick up groceries at no cost. I think it is tremendous that PLC can now be known as the place where hungry folk can go to get free groceries! Sunday, October 9 th we will get to hear about a local ministry that distributes gently used clothing at no cost. The Clothes Closet is just around the corner from PLC and is run by Love INC. We hope to start a regular shift, staffed with members from our church, to facilitate with this important ministry. The following Sunday, October 16 th is a busy day. At the morning s worship service we will be welcoming new members into PLC! It is always exciting to see folks added to our family. We will hold an orientation for those wanting to join our congregation on Saturday prior to the welcome. That Sunday we will also take part in the CROP Walk which raises awareness and funds for those who are hungry both locally and nationally. For those who aren t walking, we will be building two wheelchairs for ROC Wheels in the Fellowship Hall at 2:00. It is a great way for people of all ages to help provide quality wheelchairs for those where their access is limited. That s a lot going on! It is wonderful to see PLC active in mission with Christ. So, October is a great month to get involved in something that will make a huge difference in someone s life. Maybe, even yours! Gratefully, Pastor Bob 3

FIRST COMMUNION CLASS We would like to invite third-graders to be a part of a very special program. This is the time we provide instruction for children in Holy Communion and to receive a Bible embossed with their names along with handwritten notes from their parents, grandparents, and baptismal sponsors. We also provide instruction for them to serve as an acolyte. We have scheduled our classes to run 5 weeks after school on Tuesdays beginning October 11. On Sunday, November 20, after their instruction, we will present their Bibles and they will take their first communion during Sunday s worship service. Please let the church office know if you would like your child to be a part of this program and if these dates and times will work for you. Also let us know your child s name as you want it printed on their new Bible. NEW MEMBER S CLASSES Thinking about joining Peace Lutheran Church? 9 THE BLESSINGS OF PEACE Matthew 19:14 but Jesus said, Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven. This past Sunday the church was once again filled with a young buzzing and excitement that comes when Sunday School starts up. Yeaaaaaaa, the kids are back!! In my mind, this is one of the greatest Blessings of Peace. Anything to do with children has always touched my heart and I believe, has help make me a better person, bringing me closer to God. I love seeing the world through the eyes of a child! There are so many ways, that children can touch our hearts; They are spontaneous, perceptive, honest, focused, expressive, and joyful. They have a terrific imagination and a keen desire to explore and discover. Children can truly teach us the essence of what life is all about. They can make a sad day brighter. They make beautiful, priceless memories for our reflection. They touch our hearts, which are forever changed when we love a child. A child has THE most beautiful smile! They can bring lost innocence back into our busy lives. Children are a gift from God, they are a heritage, blessing and reward from God. Jesus loves Children and God loves Children. We are children of God, adopted as God s children. Thank you God for all the beautiful children in our Peace family! Matthew 18:1-6 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, and said, Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. Jackie Currey Pastor Jeff s quiz answers: 1. Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. 2. You shall not give false witness against your neighbor. 3. Three articles comprised of Father, Son and Holy Spirit Theses 5. Fourth; Honor your father and mother so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. (See Ex. 20: 12) 6. The old Adam or also original sin. 7. The true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8. True 9. Yes. It is only unbelief that condemns.(see Mark 16:16) 10. Law and Gospel. 11. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 12. Ten Commandments, Apostles Creed, Lord s Prayer, Holy Baptism, Confession, Holy Communion. Bonus: So that the head of the family should teach it in a simple way to his household. 9

10 Wheelchair Build Peace Lutheran Church has been supporting ROC Wheels as part of our benevolence giving for the past several years. In addition, last year s Sunday School offering and the Vacation Bible School offering from this past summer have both been designated to build a wheelchair! Thanks to all the children who gave so that a child in need can have mobility! ROC Wheels is a Bozeman, Montana faith-based non-profit whose mission is to mobilize children with moderate to severe disabilities in developing countries. Their wheelchairs have been distributed in over 30 countries to date. The right wheelchair helps a child gain independence, interact with his/her peers and become a more active member of the family and community. ROC Wheels provides a blessing to more than just the children who receive the wheelchairs: 5 th -6 th graders in some of our area s schools raise money to sponsor wheelchairs and then get to actually build the chairs in their classroom. They learn that they can make a big difference in a child s life by providing that child with mobility and dignity. Prisoners in the South Dakota state prison are part of the ministry by manufacturing many of the parts used to build the chairs. Prisoners also assemble complete wheelchairs for distribution worldwide. Area youth groups take mission trips (most recently to Mexico) to do the actual distribution and fitting of wheelchairs to the recipients. They minister to these children and their families through music, Bible stories, and sharing God s love through their friendship. ROC Wheels works with physical therapists in developing countries to identify children in need, and through the wheelchair distribution process, works to educate the parents or caregivers to better assist the child. On Sunday afternoon, October 16, starting a 2 pm, we have an opportunity to build two wheel chairs. These chairs are scheduled to be included in a shipment of wheelchairs headed to Casa de Esperanza (House of Hope) in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico as part of a ROC Wheels sponsored mission distribution trip in March Everyone is welcome to join in on a wonderful afternoon of hands-on wheelchair building. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Fred or Kari Haas.
