We are in need of Leaders and numerous assistants in various positions such as Game Leader, Music Leader, Lesson Leader, Crafts Leader, Skit Leader, and Snack Leader. Please contact either Pastor or a member of the Team if you are interested. We hope to divide duties somewhat along these lines, so that no one is overwhelmed, and all involved have a great time sharing the Word of God! 1

2 Dear Peace Family, It is late April and as I write this we are in a rainy spell, April showers are sure to bring May flowers. And grass and weeds, too! My annual battle with the dreaded dandelions has begun! May brings us the hope that the seeds we have, or will plant, will grow and blossom. There s a popular expression that has taken on deeper meaning for me recently. Bloom where you are planted. But the deeper meaning for me comes with a slightly different take. Bloom where God has planted you. I can hardly believe that is coming up on 2 years since you have called me to join your pastoral team. Time sure flies! It is encouraging and edifying to see how the Holy Spirit is moving in our congregation! There is a volunteer spirit at Peace Lutheran Church that gives evidence of that. Many hands not only make lighter work; the light of Christ shines brighter, too! This brings to mind what is printed in our Sunday bulletins. Ministers: All who believe. For me, that not only refers to our firm belief in the truth of Christ but the belief that all of us have a role to play in the life of our church family. I thank God that our church family is growing in membership numbers. But even more than that, I thank God that our member participation in the ministry and mission of our congregation is active too! There are many different ministry teams and groups that keep our congregation vibrant and active in service to God within our church, out into our community and far beyond. Within our congregation there are the Ministry Teams of Worship and Music, Property Care, Education and Youth, Congregational Life, Outreach and Mission, and Stewardship and Finance. We have quilters called Repiecers- who meet every Wednesday. (In fact we will have the Blessing of Quilts on Sunday, May 1). There is the Altar Guild, Sunday School, the Tuesday afternoon Crossways Bible Study, the women s Thursday night Bible book study group. the Choir, several Sunday morning worship groups, Sunday morning ushers, lectors and servers, and more. We are in partnership with Christian ministries that operate outside of our congregation. Family Promise, Love, INC, Habitat for Humanity, ROC Wheels, Community Café, Gallatin Valley Food Bank, Christ Gift Academy, and Lutheran World Relief. If you are not currently participating in one or more of the ministries I ve mentioned above, follow God s call to do so. Or if you would like to expand your current participation in the life of our congregation I urge you to do that as well. Just contact me, Pastor Bob or Karlene in the church office. Dear friends in Christ and fellow ministers of the gospel, we are all called to Bloom where God has planted us. I know in my heart that God has planted you and me in Peace Lutheran Church not only because we believe, but because we belong. We belong to the family of God. As such, God wants each one of us to bloom in our faith, in our fellowship and our participation in the work of God s people. Love in Christ, Pastor Jeff 2

3 If you call out for insight and cry loud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:3-6 Dear Family at Peace, In the month of May, each year we rally people together for the National Day of Prayer. All over the country, gatherings are hosted to pray for the many aspects that make up our lives together. The Scriptures call us to turn to God as a people of faith. They implore us to seek God who gives wisdom, knowledge and understanding. President George Washington in 1789 warned the people of this young country that it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God. We endeavor to do this. Along with a time of praise and thanksgiving, acknowledging who God is and what he has done for us, time is spent interceding for seven particular areas: Government, Military, Media, Business, Education, Church and Family. Peace Lutheran Church will host this year s National Day of Prayer Gathering on Thursday, May 5 th at 7:00 pm. Members of the West Gallatin Area Ministerial Association will lead us in worship and prayer for our country. Those in attendance are encouraged to participate fully, lifting their hearts and voices to God through song and prayers. I can think of no better thing we can do for our country and no better time for us to do it, than to join together in prayer. We often show our concerns and frustrations with our current situations and lament over the way things are. During a Presidential election year, in particular, we find ourselves realizing we are at the mercy of God Almighty. This is an opportunity to do something about it. I am not saying that the Nation Day of Prayer is the only way, or only day, to pray for our nation. But, this is the day that people throughout the nation are asked, in unity, to turn their eyes upward to God in whom we live under. If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and forgive their sin and heal their land. II Chronicles 7:14 We are in desperate need. Please join us. Gratefully, Pr. Bob 3

8 LWR Quilt Pick-up Please mark on your calendar Saturday, May 14th for the annual loading of the Lutheran World Relief donations. The scheduled time is 2PM and we are usually done in 2 hours. Since we are the last stop before the semi heads for the LWR warehouse in Minneapolis we are loading boxes from other congregations in the area. Weather permitting, I will be working in the Peace Garden prior to loading the truck. There are several projects that need attention now rather than waiting for the clean-up day. I will be starting about 10AM. This is very unstructured (haven't told the property care committee or figured out lunch) but if you can come help that would be awesome. More will follow as the plan for the garden comes together (or falls apart). Questions: Diane Oddy SERVANT NEWS The Peace Servants are beginning a new three month cycle for May, June and July under the leadership of Tiina Smith. The Servants prepare, serve, clean up and generally host many church fellowship activities, as well as caring service to member. These servants provide a vital service to our congregation: Tiina Smith, leader Kari Haas Cheryl Bechtold Lorrie Hansen Kay Cavanaugh Linda Miller Dianne Coughlin Megan Paulson Kate Davis Debbie Porter Kristy Rieger THANK YOU to the servants who served during November, December and January under Gayle Clifford s leadership. 9 Peace Lutheran Church Council Minutes March 10, 2016 The meeting was called to order by President Mike Hansen at 7:02 pm. Members present: Mike Hansen, Kari Haas, Val Ross, Tom Gruss, Jackie Currey, Bruce Sorensen, Bill Miller, Jerry Swenson, Ross Leake, Pr. Coughlin, Pr. Redlin. Members absent: Tiina Smith, John Gillis, Derrick Monson, Jim Cook. 1. Opening devotions by Bruce Sorensen from the book The Message of Leadership. He chose one called #12-The Bad Taste in Your Mouth which warns us to be careful of the words that come out of our mouths and the impact they can make, and encourages us to make that impact good. 2. Minutes of Feb 7, 2016 meeting reviewed. A few name spelling changes, and added Mission/Outreach Committee assignment to New Business section b. (Bruce & Kari are assigned to that committee). Bruce motioned, Jackie seconded that we accept them, passed with no other changes. Released to the Newsletter. 3. Val presented Treasurer s Report for February 29, $20,000 from endowment fund will be moved into an American Bank laddered CD per previous council decision. Bruce made a motion that the members of the Finance Committee be the signatories for the account, with two signatures required, Bill seconded, passed. Val will get internet access for tracking interest. Tom moved and Bruce seconded to accept the Treasurer s report. Passed. 4. Congregational Concerns a. Have had concern expressed about needing to fill out both the pew pads and communion cards. May look at whether the pew pads can be overprinted to add the communion information needs. Cards are providing better records than we ve ever had on communion, which is a positive outcome. b. Sanctuary projector/screen. Current method of using technology in the sanctuary is less than desirable, but has been a very useful tool for Sunday School, VBS, some midweek services, and occasionally to enhance worship. Council defers to Worship Committee, who could bring it forward with a recommendation as a new business item if they so choose. c. Bright sunlight coming into sanctuary through front windows during this time of year makes for difficulty in some pews. Bruce offered to do some checking to see what our options might be for a fix. 5. Pastor s Report a. Pastor Bob discussed some changes in confirmation program. Currently has one group on Sunday evenings and one on Wednesday evenings. Will continue that until the end of the year and then go to Wednesday only. Ministerial Association is planning for a Good Friday mid-day service at Belgrade Community Church. Soldier s Chapel is working out their summer schedule, and Bob would like to continue preaching there 2 Sundays as he has during past summers. He would schedule them on the Sundays when he isn t preaching at Peace Lutheran. Bob and Dianne will attend the LCMC Northwest District Annual gathering April Will take a few days on the way to visit family. Council agrees use of business/professional allowance is appropriate for registrations and accommodations. Pastor Bill will fill in at Peace Lutheran on Sunday, April 17 since both Pr. Bob & Pr. Jeff will be at the LCMC gathering. b. Pastor Jeff and Misty are also attending the LCMC Northwest District gathering. Pr. Jeff & Pr. Bob have completed the preaching schedule through Labor Day. Peacemakers is going very well and is a real blessing. They ve added 7 th graders, who are inviting friends, so getting more kids. Good rapport with kids. Would like to take vacation time May Pr. Bob & Pr. Jeff did a radio spot on 99.1 (PSA and short talk about Lenten services). 6. New Business a. Lady Bug Preschool: Shari Watson, Leslie Bartle & Tracey Bolich attended to present a letter asking for the privilege of using Peace Lutheran again for the school year. Council agrees it is a great partnership. 80 children attend in 8 different classes, and the preschool makes valuable contributions in addition to the monthly rent. The children LOVE Pastor Time, which Pr. Bob & Pr. Jeff started this year. May 26 is their last day of classes this spring. 9

10 b. Mike confirmed/updated council member terms for the Council Directory and will get the information to Karlene. c. A Girl Scout troop has requested to use the church each Tuesday starting in the fall, but the council felt we didn t have the capacity to take on that commitment. Tuesdays are used for education/sessions such as Creation Health, and most other evenings are already booked with activities and meetings. Bill motioned, Bruce seconded that we not approve the request. Passed. Mike will notify them. d. Procedure when Service Help (Servants) not secured. Mike proposed and it was agreed that the ministry team would go back to prior month to try and get help from people on previous month s list, in conjunction with previous month s ministry team members. e. Parsonage Report. Property Care committee will put on their list 3 items: Asphalt the driveway, house trim and sidewalk. f. Community Garden preparation. This was taken care of by the previous secretary, although not part of the duties of that position. Karlene can take the phone calls and schedule plots, but we will need to find someone for everything else (soil testing, watering amounts, etc). Tom suggested perhaps the Garden Club could be approached, or we could put it out to the congregation to see if someone might be interested. Will wait until after Easter. 7. Team Reports a. Congregational Life: New Members will be received on Palm Sunday, although only 3 can be present that day. Those unable to attend will become members in the fall. Church Directory pictures will be taken by LifeTouch on April at the church. LifeTouch will be contacting members to schedule photos. Each family will determine what information will be in the Directory, and the information will NOT be online. Each family having pictures taken will get a directory and an 8X10 photo at no charge. They can purchase additional pictures, but no pressure to do so. If a member prefers to submit a picture of their own, they would pay $10 for a directory. b. Education/Youth: VBS will be July Youth are doing the Easter breakfast with a free-will offering, and they will determine where the net proceeds will go. They will also do an Easter egg hunt for grade 6 and younger after the breakfast. c. Property Care: No report. d. Stewardship/Finance: Group discussed the CD issue via but didn t have a meeting. Will hold one in April. e. Outreach/Mission: Val wants to have the youth research our various benevolence partners and then do a 5-minute presentation on each of them during church services, with the first one in April. Would be at the end of the morning announcement time. Youth Mission Trip will be an urban mission in Denver, CO August Six youth have committed, and 2 adults. Will be doing fundraisers, but will also be presenting a funding request to the council at the April meeting. Committee also looked at how we might learn more about and perhaps plug into some work with Love, Inc. f. Worship/Music: Lots of services this month, so have been busy. Decided not to do a sunrise service this year, with Easter being so early (weather concerns). May consider for next year. No Seder meal on Maundy Thursday, just the service. Choir will be done after the Easter service. until fall. Worship committee members were unanimous in their preference not to have 2 Sunday services. Sunday School kids will sing at the service on May Old Business: a. Tax Exempt Status: Topic tabled until April meeting. b. Church Directory Update: (see item 7a. above) c. Streaming Issues: Eric Holton took care of the problem. It was a website issue and has been resolved. d. LCMC NW District Annual Gathering April 15-16: Both pastors and their spouses will be attending. There are 2 people coming from national to speak. See also items 5a and 5b above. Bruce made motion, Bill seconded to adjourn. Meeting adjourned around 9:30 pm. Next Meeting changed to Tuesday April 19 th. Devotions to be done by Jackie. 10
