October 1 is The Word, October 8 is Baptism, October 15 is The Two Kingdoms, October 22 is Vocation and October 29, Reformation Sunday, is Justification. All liturgy, music and sermons during our worship services will focus on the particular Reformation theme for that day. Holy Communion will be observed on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month. Please join us as we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation in our October worship services! CROP WALK marks the 28th year of Hunger Walks in Bozeman!! And Peace Lutheran has been involved for the majority of those years. This year's walk will be on Sunday, October 15 th, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Gallatin Food Bank in Bozeman. The proceeds from the walk will be used locally and around the world to alleviate hunger. If you are interested in being a "walker" or a "pledger," please see Jinx Sorensen. Those walking can meet at the church and car pool to Gallatin Valley Food Bank in Bozeman. 1

2 I do not pray for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. John 17: When Jesus prayed the above words, he was with his disciples in the upper room on the night of the Last Supper. It would be the last time he would have with all of them before his death. St. John, alone of the gospel writers, records this wonderful prayer. In fact, the entire chapter of John17 is of Jesus praying. Jesus prays first for his disciples, that God the Father would keep them in your name which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. (v.11). Then he prays for all believers in verses that I have posted above. Both the language and the desire of our Lord is virtually the same here as when he prayed for his disciples. Why am I citing these verses in the month that we commemorate and celebrate the 500 th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation? In part, because Christians need this prayer of our Lord as much now, or more even, than when Jesus prayed it. Truth be told, in the early stages of the Reformation, in 1529, Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli (the founder of the Reformed churches) disagreed sharply on their understanding of Holy Communion at the Marburg Colloquy. Sadly, what could have led to a sorely needed unity among the fledgling Protestants resulted in division instead. Truth be told, Christian unity, as our Lord Jesus Christ desired it, is still unrealized today. Different denominations have differing sacramental understanding, differing understanding of what worship should, or should not, be. They have differing understanding even of the Bible, what translation is preferred, what it says about human sexuality, for examples. Now I not suggesting that complete agreement on things such as the sacraments, worship style and substance, or even Bible interpretation must be reached before harmony and unity is possible. What I am saying is that disagreements in those areas, can and usually does, lead to an us and them mentality which is a far cry from Jesus prayer that we may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I in you. Protestants are all one in the sense that we are all Christians, but Christ asks for far more than that from us. He wants unity and harmony in His church, the body of Christ. When you stop and think about it, it is a truly profound and wonderful thing to know that Christ prays for His church. When we pray as we ought, we pray in His name and for His sake. To think that Jesus is praying for us in His name also, is staggeringly wonderful! This year and this month is indeed something to celebrate and to commemorate. But let us remember that the Reformation of Christ s church is still needed and still must continue. Just imagine what Protestant churches of every sort would look like if we all earnestly desired to be the answer to our Lord s prayer in John 17? Love in Christ, Pastor Jeff 2

3 Dear Family at Peace, If you have already looked at the calendar in this newsletter, you know there is a lot going on at PLC! September marks the beginning of many of the programs around the church and community. October is the month when things are in full swing! In addition, 2017 we mark the 500 th anniversary of a very significant date in the Lutheran Family. Along with the Christian Education programs I told you about last month, we have some special activities in October that will help us celebrate and appreciate our Lutheran Christian Heritage. Our Sunday Worship services will carry a theme throughout the month that will take us back to the foundations that the provide the bedrock for the Reformation culminating with our celebration of Reformation/Confirmation Sunday, October 29 th. I hope you will be able to join us for Movie Night on Friday, October 13 th when we will show Luther, a very well done contemporary re-telling of the story of the famous Reformer. I have also made a Reformation Information table available to you in the Fellowship Hall. The table is filled with resources that may help make this special celebration more meaningful. These resources, along with the educational opportunities, are things PLC has to offer so you and your family won t miss out on this unique opportunity! An emphasis of the Reformation is the return to and application of the Word of God. In it we find a God of Love who sent His Only Son to redeem us to himself. He did this because of His love for us, not because of what we deserve. Our response to this gift, is spreading the good news of God s great love through our words and our actions. As these educational opportunities are designed to equip you with the knowledge to share, we also have ways for you to show the love of God. PLC continues to host the Gallatin Valley Food Bank every Monday. We also serve meals at the Community Café the 4 th Sunday of every month. The Crop Walk raises money for those who are in need. It takes place on Sunday, October 15 th. PLC is now active in helping at the Clothes Closet sponsored by Love INC in Belgrade, the third Thursday each month. The RePiecers are still furnishing their quilted creations for Lutheran World Relief every Wednesday. Please consider helping out with any of these ministry opportunities. I find that when we put our faith into action, it puts new meaning to what we know as true. Let s make our celebration of events that changed the world 500 years ago be a catalyst that will help change the world for years to come! Gratefully, Pr. Bob 3
