3 Dear Family at Peace, With the turn of the calendar to March we enter into the season of Lent. The sixweek season begins with Ash Wednesday, which sets the tone for the season humility, simplicity, sobriety and sorrow. In our practice of Ash Wednesday, we are reminded of our fragility and mortality. Dust and ashes. These symbolize two themes that are at the heart of Lent: our mortality as creatures and our moral culpability. We acknowledge both as admission of our need for a Savior. One author describes it this way: Each year the season of Lent asks us to embrace a spiritual gravity, a downward movement of the soul, a turning from our self-sufficiency and sinfulness. In such quiet turning, we are humbled and thus made ready to receive from God a fresh and joyous grace. (Bobby Gross Living the Christian Year) We do this through worship that takes into account our sin and need for forgiveness. The songs and hymns we sing reflect our condition and the suffering that was voluntarily bore by Christ on our behalf (Is.52:13-53:12). We can think of Lent as a sojourn and a journey as we identify with Jesus spending time in the desert, alone in self-reflection and discernment of God s way. The journey takes place on the road to Jerusalem as Jesus moves toward his dark destiny. The sojourn causes us to look inward and acknowledge our human and spiritual vulnerabilities; the journey bids us look outward and weigh the costs of discipleship. Many find it helpful to adopt new practices or spiritual disciplines during Lent. These may include prayer and Scripture meditation, moral inventory and behavior change, fasting and other forms of abstinence, acts of generosity and service. It is also helpful at this time to rehearse and reaffirm our baptismal promises: to renounce Satan and all evil powers and sinful desires, to trust in the grace of Christ as our Savior, to follow him as our Lord. As we turn inward and turn Godward, we can trust Him to turn toward us with spiritual grace (see Ps. 138; Jas 4:6). It is my prayer that we at Peace Lutheran Church will be lead into a season of deeper meaning and closer relationship to our Lord. Sojourners and Pilgrims together, Pastor Bob 3
4 Dear Friends, Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with thy free Spirit. (Psalm 51: 10-12) These familiar verses from Psalm 51 are very important to me. When I want to bring my thoughts and prayers to God I often begin by first saying these words. Sometimes when I walk our dog, Sadie, or am driving my pickup I ll sing these words using the melody from the old ALC red Service Book and Hymnal. I still prefer the melody in that hymnal above any others that I ve heard and I ve used the translation from that hymnal above. It is no surprise that Psalm 51is the first psalm we read in Lent. Lent is a time to face the truth of sinful humanity, For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. (v.3) Like King David, we know that in order for us to give God what God desires, truth in the inner parts (v.6) we must do as David did- acknowledge and confront our sin. We, too, must pray for God s abundant grace and mercy. It is no accident that the first words of this psalm are Have mercy on me, O God. Our confession of sin must not be merely an expression of remorse or our struggle with failure or guilt but the recognition that we need to be changed. Our problem is not just the need for a pardon for a particular wrong but a deliverance from the predicament of ourselves, Surely I was sinful at birth. (v.5) Yet Psalm 51 is not just about our nature- it is also about God s nature. After beseeching God for mercy, David concludes verse 1 with the declaration, according to your steadfast love and abundant mercy. (v.1b) God is willing to forgive sinners and is able to re-create people. Amid the persistent reality of our sinfulness, through the grace of God there can be a new creation- one that even when derailed by sin still knows the joy of God s salvation. Lent reminds us that the way of salvation leads us to only one place, the cross of Jesus Christ. Only when we lay our sins upon our Savior can we inherit the promise of forgiveness that brings us eternal life with our Lord Jesus Christ in heaven. I look forward to participating in the 40 day Lenten journey with you that begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1. From the cross to the tomb, from the tomb to heaven, Lord we will lift your name on high! O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise. (v.15) Love in Christ, Pastor Jeff 4
