God has a purpose for us on this earth. That calling is to be in mission with God where He has placed us. But, how are we living examples of the gospel while we work? You re invited to the 2018 Work as Worship Retreat, where business leaders and pastors will discuss what it looks like to connect faith and work. Taking place on February 23, 2018, the live event in Dallas will be web-streamed to Peace Lutheran Church. The retreat takes place from 7:30 am. 2:30 pm. The day will be filled with real-life stories, biblical teaching, and practical wisdom that will equip you in the marketplace to see your work as an opportunity to care for your families, fulfill your calling, and bring glory to God. Check out to learn more or register for the Retreat. Or, contact Peace Lutheran Church Lent season begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14. This service includes Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes. Soup supper will begin at 6:15 p.m. and the worship service is at 7:00 p.m. This schedule will remain the same for the following five Wednesday nights through March 21. Come join us on our Lenten journey to the cross. 2 It doesn t happen very often at all but when it does it sure can make us think. For the first time since 1945 (I looked it up!) Valentines Day 2018 is on Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is our liturgical door into the season of Lent. A time of remembering our Lord Jesus Christ s Passover from death to life. A time when we reflect on the reality and the guilt of our sin and our unworthiness and inability to rid our selves of that sin. But Lent is also a time when the unconditional and all-encompassing love of God is revealed in the cross, the most unlikely of places. We cling to that old rugged cross for it is only there that we can receive the blessed assurance of our Lord Jesus, Father, forgive them, they know not what they do. No greater love than this is possible. And living in that un-surpassing love of God, our life with Christ is renewed. For you see, Lent can be as much about renewal as it is contrition. Starting on Ash Wednesday our Lenten vesper messages will focus on 6 Spiritual Disciplines that will give Christians a tried and true path to spiritual renewal and growth. Pr. Bob and I will be drawing from two giants in the field of Spiritual Growth, Richard Foster and Dallas Willard. They point out that for any renewal and growth to happen there needs to be a diligent and sincere practice of disciplines. These spiritual disciplines can be set in three broad movement of the Holy Spirit, inward, outward and corporate. The inner disciplines offer avenues for personal examination and change. The outward disciplines prepare us to make the world a better place. The corporate disciplines bring us nearer to one another and to God. Pr. Bob and I invite you this Lent season to join us as together we explore the practice of 6 spiritual disciplines so that we might discover a richer spiritual life and a deeper understanding of our Triune God and his love. Love in Christ, Pastor Jeff 2

3 Dear Family at Peace Lutheran, I write you after we have completed our Annual Congregational Meeting for It s a little hard for me to believe that it was the fourth such meeting since I have been called to become your full-time pastor to replace the retiring Pastor Bill Duffey. Granted, in that time, January s meeting was only the second meeting I have been able to attend! I want to express my appreciation to you all, for the way you continue to support the ministry of Peace Lutheran Church. Many have stepped into important leadership roles such as Church Council, Committees, Ministry Teams and the several ministries of this congregation. Reading the annual president s and committee reports, I am struck by the many and various activities and areas in which we are involved. That number continues to grow! While the ministries of this congregation are a very important part (the important part!) of why we exist, I am also grateful for the concern folk have for our facility and grounds. Several times throughout the year, I see people pitching in to help pick up, clean up, fix up and make sure this place stays warm, inviting and viable for our many ministries. You have been generous with your time and talents. From the weekly chores it takes to keep us going, to the seasonal work that provides us with an enjoyable place to worship and serve the community, I am grateful to the many who put their efforts forth for the benefit of us all. Thank you to all who have willingly and eagerly jumped in to projects that you have seen a need to get done. And, you did it! I am also impressed with the way congregation members reacted to the recommendation of replacing our aging furnaces with new, more efficient units. The heating-systems we have are not broken, but there is great support for not letting that happen. The forethought to avoid an emergency by taking care of problems before they happen, shows good leadership and wisdom. Fortunately, we are in a place where we have the resources to make the necessary replacements. That, again, is reflective of way our Church Family functions. The power of God s people, filled with God s Spirit, involved in God s Mission together is a dynamic thing in which to be a part. It is fulfilling and uplifting for those involved. It makes us an active and growing family of God. Just imagine, what we can do next! Gratefully, Pr. Bob 3

It is a lofty goal, but your donation helps us inch closer to that reality. Each month we are able to distribute an average of 1,361 emergency food boxes in our community thus serving over 3,200 people. This food goes to individuals, families, single parents and senior citizens all of whom need nourishing food to keep going. This food allows them to have one less thing to worry about in a long list of concerns, i.e. heating bills, school supplies, medical costs, etc. I can t begin to thank you enough for partnering with us to fill a necessity for our neighbors. Your generosity is greatly appreciated by all of us at the Food Bank. Please feel free to stop by and visit us, as we would love to show you the many ways we reach out to those in need. 7 SERVANT NEWS CHANGE OF COMMAND Gayle Clifford has taken the lead as our new overall head of the Servants of Peace, and Karlene is now overseeing Gayle s group, which begin a new 3 month cycle for February, March and April. The Servants prepare, serve, clean up and generally host many church fellowship activities, as well as caring serving to members. These servants provide a vital service to our congregation: Karlene Swenson, leader Carol Albertson Debra Briggs Becky Erickson Pam Cook Julie Hanson Katy Grassel Lisa McCurley Debbie Porter Nancy Schievelbein Trish Severson Deanna Thurston THANK YOU to the servants who served during November, December and January under Jinx Sorensen s leadership. They are: Trish Baker Tracey Bolich Laura Carter Jackie Currey Connie Holton Lori Lanzendorf Claudia Leake Diane Oddy Val Ross Tracy Simonson Nicky Swenson Karlene Swenson Audrey Vitarius Carol White October brought big changes to the restaurant formerly known as the Community Café as we reopened with a new name..fork & SPOON HOMESTYLE KITCHEN, logo and dining room facelift! Customers now order off an a la carte menu and kid friendly meal options have been introduced! Most importantly, the core of our dinner service has not changed as we continue the Pay-What-You-Can dinner option. It is our hope that these changes will bring more people in for dinner. In order to sustain this service in the long run, we need the community s support in the form of increased patronage. Joining us for dinner and paying-it-forward for those who can t strengthens our community. We couldn t have made it this far without the support of donors like you. Thank you for believing in our goal of building community over delicious meals for all. You have made a difference in our community these last 5½ years and we hope you will continue to partner with us as we strive to end hunger in our community. Please join us for dinner Sunday-Friday 5:00-7:00 p.m. for great customer service, more meal options, and our continued mission of serving delicious meals to our customers. With Appreciation, Chelsea Eddy, Front of House Manager 7
