Come spend an evening with friends, good food and some spirited singing. The Church will supply burgers, hot dogs, buns, condiments and beverages. Please bring a salad, side dish, chips or dessert to share. Throw in a lawn chair and bring along any lawn games you might have too! See you there! 1

2 Those of us who are blessed to live in SW Montana know that summer time brings vacationers from across our country and around the world to our area. Yellowstone National Park is a major destination point, of course, but there are plenty of other pristine places a lot less crowded that tourists can go to if they take time to ask the locals about them. Speaking of vacationers, by the time you read this Misty and I will be in Norway visiting our former exchange student Simen Solberg and his family. We have never traveled internationally across either ocean so this will be an amazing experience for us! Simen s family is hosting us and they have planned activities for the 6 days we are there. On the docket is a trip to Oslo to see all the famous sites, do some shopping, and stops at a couple of their popular eating places. After that we will ride up Norway s most popular railroad track from Flan to Mydral; one of the steepest grades in the world. Then a 20 kilometer bike ride back down the vertiginous valley side of the fjord that has 21 hairpin turns- (the most memorable vacations always have an element of danger thrown into the mix, don t they!) Visits to various historical sites and museums, touring some spectacular fjords, and a stop at a 1000 yr. old stave church are also planned. But about half of our time in Norway will be spent off the grid so to speak at the Solberg family s vacation home tucked away in the Norwegian forest- hiking, biking, playing games, sharing stories and just plain enjoying each other s company. Building relationships that hopefully will last the rest of our lives. In God s eyes, of course, he doesn t see Americans or Norwegians, just his children that he loves and gave life to- children that He desires to be in harmonious and loving relationship with each other. Whether near or far what the Psalmist said is so true, How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity! (Ps. 133:1) This summer we who are permanent residents of SW Montana will come into contact with plenty of tourists, visitors and recreationists. Let us practice hospitality and always be gracious in our talk and actions even when they are not. Come to think of it, let us also make it a special point to always do that with those we know and love in our families, our congregation, and our community. There is enough turmoil and strife in the world. Therefore as ambassadors for Christ, let us not promote or engage in discord and division. A good Bible verse to remember in that regard is from Paul s letter to the Christian church in Rome, If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 3 Dear Family at Peace, We are well into the summer. Many have been enjoying the great outdoors in beautiful weather. Camping, swimming, rafting, hiking, backyard BBQs, rodeos, and summer celebrations! It is hard to beat summer months in Montana. During the summer months, our lectionary texts center on the Paul s Letter to the Romans for our Sunday Scripture Readings. I have long thought that this epistle is one of the most complete of Paul s letters for its richness, its argumentative logic and its wonderful depiction of what is ours in Christ. It was a favorite of Martin Luther s. And it is also a favorite of mine. In college, when I first took an interest in the study of the Bible, I was led to the Book of Romans. I remember gathering around the kitchen table with my new Bible and a few buddies as we poured over the pages of this great letter, read commentaries and listened to cassette tape lectures. It shaped my understanding of the faith I had grown up in but was finally starting to try to understand. The letter challenged me from the start. In the first chapter Paul declares that he is not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith. (Rms. 1:16) It made me want to know what this gospel of power was about and make sure I understood it enough to explain it to others. I also wondered if I had lived my life as if I was not ashamed of it. As I studied I found myself not only knowing more about what God had done for me in Christ, but feeling more of the great love He has for me. For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. (Rms. 5:6,8) Romans established a solid foundation for my faith that has withstood the last 40+ years. I am excited that we are looking at it again, as a congregation, in hopes that it will remind us of the wonderful gift that is ours in Christ. And the depth, the width and the height of the love of God! Please join me in these summer months to examine this great letter of our faith. Make it your goal to read through it, slowly and thoughtfully. I will be using it for my messages on Sundays. We will look at the great truths in hopes that we will then follow Paul s invitation to us all: I appeal to you brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God which is your spiritual worship. (Rms. 12:1) As you enjoy the many pleasures of your Summer in Montana, join me in digging the roots of your faith in Paul s letter to the Romans. Gratefully, Pastor Bob 3

PLEASE come help us in the garden. It is lovely to behold but the task is becoming pretty overwhelming for 3 of us. This summer the clover seems to be winning the battle. We schedule meeting at 9 AM on Fridays but there are times when we can't be there. Anytime is a good time to pick a bucket or 2 of weeds. If you know what clover looks like you are qualified for the clover battle. Please consider helping so Cindy and Julie can spend more time on the beautifying part of the work. Who are PEACE LUTHERAN SERVANTS and what do we do???? The Servants of Peace are divided in to four groups with each group serving for a three month period. FEBRUARY/MARCH/APRIL MAY/JUNE/JULY AUGUST/SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER NOVEMBER/DECEMBER/JANUARY The events in which the Servants will be involved are Lent and Advent Soup and Bread Suppers, Belgrade Ministerial Luncheons, and some unplanned events, such as Casserole Care and Memorial Services. Each group has a leader who will contact their group members at the beginning of their 3 month cycle and outline the planned events. If you would like to a part of one of these groups, please let Karlene the Church office know. The more volunteers we have, the easier our job becomes. And..it s a great way to get to know more people in our church family. 6
