This edifying book offers us a fuller understanding of the Eucharist through the story of two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). Like the disciples we, too, come together in our brokenness before God, hear His Word and encounter the resurrected Jesus in the breaking of bread. 3 Dear Family of Peace Lutheran, During this season of Lent we are taking time to examine ourselves, humbly asking for forgiveness, and clinging to the joyous hope of the resurrection. At our midweek vesper service, we are focusing on the story about the two travelers who encounter Jesus found in Luke 24. We are taking a look at the elements encountered in this meeting and how they relate to our Lenten journey. It is evident at the beginning of the story that the travelers are weary from the events they just experienced: The arrest, trial and crucifixion of their leader and friend and the report that Jesus was no longer in the tomb where he had been placed. There was much confusion and bewilderment. All this left their heads, and guts, spinning. They didn t know what to make of the events in which they found themselves. No wonder they didn t recognize Jesus when he joined them on their journey! As we listen to their conversation with the unrecognized savior, we find out that their dreams have been shattered. Their hopes died with the crucifixion of the one in who they had thought would be their Savior. These men were clearly mourning their losses. We are no strangers to loss. I bet it wouldn t take you very long to write down a page full of things family, friends, finances, health, and dreams, you have lost. Our lives seem like a long series of losses. So, how do we handle that? How do we cope with the sadness and despair and disillusionment we face when reality comes crashing in? What do we do with these losses? Like these two on the road to Emmaus, we must mourn our losses. We cannot walk away from them or talk our way out of them. We must shed tears over our losses and allow ourselves to grieve deeply. We become aware of the painful truth of our brokenness and the brokenness of the world around us. But, somehow in the midst of our grief a gift is hidden. Finding that gift is connected to whether our losses lead us to resentment or to gratitude. Both are options to us. With the strength of the grace of God, we can choose gratitude. Mourning our losses is the first step away from resentment and towards gratitude. Just like a well-cultivated field can soak up the rain needed for crops to grow, so it is with our hearts. Only when they are broken can they receive the water of God s grace. Maybe that is what Jesus meant when he said: Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. (Matt 5:4) When we are willing to accept and mourn our loss, God can fill us with the grace of gratitude. That is the Good News this Lenten Season. When we look at our sin and the sin of the world, we cry Lord have mercy! He then comes and pours his gift of grace into our sorrowful hearts. It is the resurrection story: Out of brokenness and sadness, springs fullness of life and joy! He is risen indeed! Pr. Bob 3
4 On March 27, Easter Sunday, the sanctuary of PLC will ring out with glad shouts of He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Hallelujah! The somber 40 day Lenten season of contrition and reflection on the cross of Christ that culminates in darkness on the night of Good Friday gives way to the light of Easter morning. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the epicenter of Christianity. It is the faith requirement through which seekers become followers. The Apostle Paul taught that it is impossible to become a Christian without believing it. That if confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Rom. 10:9) Furthermore, Christ s Resurrection stands for this great truth: that death, which could not hold Jesus in the grave, will not hold those who believe in him. What joy this brings! Knowing that this life is not all there is. To be sure God gives us an abundance of blessings while we live on earth and we thank God for them. The love of family and friends, the warm and welcoming fellowship of our church family, the beauty of Southwestern Montana landscapes, these are but a few of the blessings that all of us at Peace Lutheran Church can be thankful for. Yet, the promise of Easter is that these earthly blessings will pale in comparison to the fullest measure of love, fellowship and beauty that we will experience in the kingdom of heaven. And these heavenly blessings will be for eternity! Knowing that a heavenly glory awaits us, we each can travel the road to eternity with a deep, abiding joy in our hearts; trusting that-come what may- our lives are always in our Heavenly Father s grace-filled hands. The chorus of a beloved hymn by William and Gloria Gaither expresses this thought very well, Because he lives, I can face tomorrow, because he lives all fear is gone. Because I know he holds the future, and life is worth the living just because he lives. Jesus lives! And as Christians we live in the assurance of that great truth. I look forward with great anticipation to observing the most holy of weeks on the Christian calendar with all of you. Our holy week worship services begin on the morning of Palm Sunday, March 20, then on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday evenings, and culminating with 2 morning worship services on Easter Sunday. To God be the glory! Love in Christ, Pastor Jeff 4

7 If you would like to show your thanks for something in the next newsletter, please fill out a I give thanks to sheet and place it in the Give Thanks boxes that are located on the counter in the back of the Sanctuary and on a table in the Fellowship Hall. Thank you to everyone that brought soup & bread for Ash Wednesday. From Judi Beagley..THANK YOU KARLENE, for being the gracious hub-of-the-wheel for Peace Lutheran Church! From ittybitty to the major matters, she steps up and in to help our church run smoothly! PEACE LUTHERAN LIBRARY Peace Lutheran Library has the LENT/EASTER BOOKS on the Library table. There are devotional guides as well as Christian-Living spiritual books to help us realize the horrible sufferings our Savior went through for our sins; what love He has for us! Two new member-recommended books are available for you to try: SEEKING ALLAH, FINDING JESUS by Nabeel Qureshi and THE CIRCLE MAKER by Mark Batterson. Batterson s bold approach to prayer is definitely powerful; Nabeel Qureshi s book is the story of a devout Muslim s striking reaction to his encounter with Christianity. These are popular and much-discussed books now. THANK YOU to Wynne Gillis, Audrey Vitarius, and Anonymous for the many books recently donated to Peace Library. If you have a recommended book that should be in our Library, please let Judi Beagley know. Also, if you have any Christian books or money donations, these would be so appreciated!
