2 Commander-in-Chief Corner Guests from the North Friends and Brothers I am not aware of any better way to describe the members of the Scottish Rite than as Friends and Brothers. Not only are each of my acquaintances in the fraternity my brothers, but also many are counted among my closest friends and confidants. It is a wholly appropriate way for me to think about those who have dedicated themselves to furthering the craft through participation in the work of the Rite. With this in mind, Friends and Brothers has been chosen as the theme for the Fall Reunion. However, it is more than a theme, it is the essence of the Fraternity. It is what we hope to introduce the candidates to during the weekend. It is also what brings many members back semi-annually to our reunions. While the degrees are uplifting, thought provoking and beautiful, it is the fellowship and camaraderie we enjoy with the men whom we count as Friends and Brothers that causes us to return year after year. We share this primary benefit of the Rite by broadening our circle, giving this same opportunity to an everexpanding group of Friends and Brothers as we introduce membership to our Blue Lodge brethren. Not only can we do this at the November Reunion, but a special opportunity will be enjoyed as we take the 4 th and 14 th degrees to Marseilles on Saturday October 27 th. This is the first of a series of travels throughout the Valley to ensure our current and potential members recognize our desire to share the Rite with Friends and Brothers. This reunion will also be historic as we welcome Friends and Brothers from the Valley of Chicago. As many of you are aware the Valley of Chicago sold their downtown, near north side property. Their intention is to relocate to a more accessible site. While determining where that site will be, they are currently without a home in which to conduct their reunion activities. So they are traveling south to join with us for the Fall Reunion. The Friday evening festivities will conclude with a reception providing the opportunity to meet and visit with those who have traveled from the Chicago land area. Then on Saturday, we welcome the brethren from Chicago to the stage as they perform the 16 th and 31 st degrees. This will be an excellent chance to appreciate the work of these Friends and Brothers as they interpret the degrees for the combined classes. Hope your plans will permit you to be present. Finally, the Fall Reunion will conclude at our traditional banquet honoring Friends and Brothers who merit special recognition. We will present years of service awards, membership and reunion service awards, as well as recognize our recent M.S.A. and 33 rd Degree honorees. Certainly, this will be a Reunion to celebrate Friends and Brothers! Fraternally, Barry D. 3 Degree Corner, by Dennis Garrigus, Director of Work The Valley looks forward to presenting all of the degrees over a five year period and we will keep striving to do that. It has been 5 years since we have presented the 6th and 27th degrees. It has been 4 years since the 30th degree has been conferred. The more I am in communication with the Valley of Chicago the more I am looking forward to their joining us. They are going to supply an organist for the entire reunion. This should add greatly to the atmosphere. They will be presenting the 16th and 31st degrees. I am anticipating first class presentations of both degrees. Those who attend the degrees on Friday evening will also be invited to a high class reception hosted by Chicago following the 14th degree. It is going to be more than just punch and cookies. There will be an open bar and hors d oeuvres for your culinary pleasure Fall Reunion Meal Reservation Form Please enter number of meal tickets desired and return to the Consistory. **The Valley of Chicago is covering Friday dinner & reception and Saturday breakfast & lunch. The Valley of Bloomington lead this effort as their Fundraiser event during the Arena Football season with several volunteers and we thank you all so very much. As we were heading into Hockey season, the Valley was looking at a different direction in regard to keeping this particular event. That direction was in fact to have more volunteers to assist in this effort. We did not get those volunteers. I stated at the September Scottish Rite meeting, if we did not get more volunteers to assist in this effort, this Fundraiser event would come to a close. However, that in itself has changed. Theron Noth approached me after the stated meeting on Tuesday. Theron, along with Bernie Maharg, are both willing to continue the effort at the Bloomington Arena for our Fundraiser event. The concept will be working one, maybe two events per month, as well as manning one of the smaller concession stands at the Arena. It is my hope that all of you, including me, support Theron and Bernie in this effort to make this continuing effort successful. Theron and Bernie will co-chair this endeavor. The first Hockey game is approaching toward the end of the month. Theron or Bernie will be calling for volunteers to assist. Support Theron and Bernie, support your Valley. Fraternally Billy M. Burden, As the Fall reunion is quickly coming up on us, I thought it would be helpful to write about how you ask a potential candidate to join the Fraternity. It sounds so simple, but often times we completely mess the process up, by moving too slowly, moving too quickly or just failing to move at all. Recruitment is sales, plain and simple. It is a skill many of us use regularly without even knowing we are doing it. Everyone wants to be associated with something successful, so first evaluate the experience being provided by the Fraternity today. Hopefully, you will discover in that self-reflection something that you or anyone could be proud to be associated with. That is the key to selling the idea of the Scottish Rite, or in general anything to anyone. So let's start with the responsibility of individual members. How often have we heard (and said), "We'll be fine if everybody goes out and gets a man"! That sounds great when the membership chairman uses it at the meeting - short, simple and - catchy. But in reality, it rarely works. What happens is that everyone is made responsible and, therefore, no one is ultimately responsible. "Nobody will miss my little part," one brother thinks. Then a second brother gets the same idea, then the members Candidates and Membership by John Dorner who are capable of doing more settle for the one man they are asked to get, and so on, until, once again, the Fraternity fails to meet its needs. If you find yourself in this category (and we all do at some point), concentrate your efforts on helping others who are actively working to find new members by helping them to identify potential candidates, or support their recruitment efforts. There are some ground rules to recruitment that should be reviewed: Be outgoing and assertive - Do not expect prospective brothers to come to you. Go to them. Bring them to your member events. Stay in contact. Expand the prospective member base - Recognize that all non- Masonic men are potential brothers, not just those who ask us to join. Do not limit your efforts to those who are already masons. We have the opportunity to bring masonry to someone who does not even know we exist. Develop a "recruiting mentality"- Do not recruit only during certain time periods. Be prepared to find new members year round, not just when a reunion comes around. Never give up on a man. If you can't get someone you know is right for Masonry to join, try introducing him to another member and "hand the ball off." It could be as simple as having the right member ask him to join. 6 George F. Perkins Receives Thirty-third Degree at Historic Joint Session of Northern and Southern AASR Jurisdictions by Robert F. Trefzger, 33 John Wm. McNaughton, Sovereign Grand Commander of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, and Ronald A. Seale, Sovereign Grand Commander of the Southern Jurisdiction, together led an historic joint session of the Scottish Rite Supreme Councils in the United States in Washington D.C. This session and related events were held from August 26-28, including the conferral of the Thirty-third Degree by both jurisdictions. It was the first time since their founding in the early 1800 s that the Northern and Southern Jurisdictions met in joint session. Those in attendance included Grand Masters from the Grand Lodges in 47 states, and many representatives from Scottish Rite jurisdictions around the world. More than 3,500 Thirty-third Degree Masons and their ladies gathered in the nation s capital for this unique meeting of Scottish Rite Masons. The Valley of Bloomington was well represented by twelve brethren and their ladies. Our own George F. Perkins was among 174 selected to receive the Thirty-third Degree. George has been extremely active in our Valley, serving as Most Wise Master, Trustee, and most recently as Director of Work. George has also been an actor in the American Passion Play for many years, portraying the parts of various disciples, including Matthew and Andrew. Bloomington was very proud to host George and his wife, Pat, and all were pleased to congratulate George at his elevation to this degree. The Valley of Bloomington was also excited to learn that our Thirty-third nominee for the 2008 session will be Stanley P. Boyd. That session will be held in Providence, Rhode Island on August 26, During the Supreme Council Session, The Medal of Honor was presented by Grand Commander McNaughton to C. DeForrest Trexler, Active Member for Pennsylvania and chairman of the Rituals Committee, and Richard H. Curtis, retired editor of The Northern Light. The meeting concluded with a joint gala banquet at which former U.S. Senator and astronaut John Glenn addressed the assembly and was presented the Gourgas Medal from the Northern Jurisdiction. Glenn is among a group of 36 distinguished Masons who have received this award since its creation in The medal is given in recognition of notably distinguished service in the cause of Freemasonry, country or humanity. Harry Riddle, 33 and John Trefzger, 33 and Marilyn enjoy each others company at the Illinois Dinner, following the conferral of the Thirty-third degree. George F. 7 Take time out of the day to listen and share gifts of laughter and compliments: From The North English Record To the Editor: The gift of listening, but you must really listen interrupting, no day dreaming, no planning your response just listening. Brethren present at Supreme Council from the Valley of Bloomington (not pictured: John Trefzger, 33 ) Get up and Go Club Looking for Leadership Nancy Beverage reports that the last trip for the Get Up and Go Club with the current escort was taken Sept. 6th to a Cub game at Wrigley field. The group numbered only 33. Nancy says that there is interest in Cub-Cardinal games. They had about 50 fans attend the Aug. 20th game at Wrigley. The current escort is looking for a couple, probably man and wife, who enjoy Cub-Cardinal games and other group activities to step up and lead the group. They need to have the time it takes to make arrangements for trip tickets and logistics. There is seed money in the club bank account to pay for the tickets when you order them early in the year. The current escort would be happy to help new escorts get started and give them the material that she has.. Contact Nancy or the Scottish Rite office to volunteer. If no interest the funds could go to the Shrine Children s Hospital.
