Nevertheless, they remind each other, Is this not Joseph s son? Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter s son. The young man who had learned in this very synagogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mission for God s people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today s readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. 3 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, February 3, 2019 Page Jubilee Corner Scholars Symposium: March 22, 23, 24, A unique opportunity for everyone to learn more about the rich history of the California Mission System. We are honored to host experts from throughout California along with experts from Arizona, Mexico, Washington state and South Bend, Indiana, to share with us their years of research in mission history. The program includes talks on the Kumeyaay, the Spanish, the Franciscans and addresses the integral components for each culture and the establishment of the 21 Missions. The three-day event offers two days of presentations on site and an additional day to choose free guided tours at either the Presidio or Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. Five meals are included along with special events throughout the Symposium including a presentation by the Mission Choir. An optional Paella dinner with entertainment is included for an additional fee for all registered attendees. Join Virginia McCarron Tuesdays January 22 through February 12 in the California Room at 7:00pm and study the Book of Daniel, the prophecies of a young captive, Daniel, God s prophet in exile while serving pagan kings. His series of visions promised the deliverance of his people, giving him the historical countdown to the coming of the promised Redeemer-Messiah and His eternal Kingdom. International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking "If just one person realizes from this day that they or someone they know is being trafficked, we will have made a difference." Bishop Eusebio Elizondo The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General has designated February 8 as an annual day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine was freed, she became a Canossian nun and dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. She was declared a Saint in On February 8, Catholics all over the world are encouraged to host or attend prayer services to create greater awareness about this phenomenon. Through prayer, we not only reflect on the experiences of those that have suffered through this affront to human dignity, but also comfort, strengthen, and help empower survivors. Mission-Aires Meeting and Luncheon Tuesday, February 12, :30am in the California Room Come join our Sweetheart Celebration luncheon. It will begin with a business meeting followed by our Opportunity Drawing and delicious catered lunch of Roasted Chicken with all the trimmings, plus Roll, Butter, Beverage, and Red Velvet Cake for dessert. Membership fee for the 2018/2019 season is still being accepted, ($10 Members $15 Non-Members) Please sign up and pay in the Gift Shop by 1pm, Sunday, February 10. Be a sweetheart and join us as we welcome Sal and Sylvia who will provide our entertainment of music and dance. Ascension Parish s Love Our Priests Prayer Group will honor Fr. Serra Room or for Adoration in the Mission Church once a month. To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of Mission San Diego de Alcalá, our parish will be updating our 2008 Parish Directory. Invite your entire family to gather together during our pictorial directory event. Be photographed for the directory plus gather your family for a special group photograph, include your children and grandkids, even the family pet! We will be scheduling new photos for anyone who would like to be included in the Anniversary directory. Anyone that has their photo taken will receive a free copy of the new book. Please check the bulletin for information about scheduling your photo session. Senior Men s Group The group meets for lunch the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Lunch takes place at various restaurants in the nearby area. If you would like to join this ministry, call Pete Corrao at (619) All senior men are welcome. The 250th Anniversary of Mission San Diego de Alcalá will include the revival of the Old Mission Cup Golf Tournament to be held on April 26 at Admiral Baker Golf Course. It will feature a best ball scramble tournament on the North Course, land that was originally part of the Old Mission. The entry fee will be $100 per person ($360 a foursome) and includes the use of a golf cart (for 2), a continental breakfast on the patio, a putting contest, various special contests on the course and golf prizes. The tournament will commence at 12:00pm, preceded by an introduction ceremony and blessing and registration on the patio outside the Golf Shop. Registration and continental breakfast will begin at 10:00am. Putting contest will be available throughout the registration pre-tournament period. Following the tournament, there will be a tournament celebration dinner at the Mission. Sponsorships are available. For more information joejanbart@aol.com. 250 th Jubilee Mission Bus Tour Pilgrimage Great News! Fr. Billy Zondler is going on the Bus Tour! The itinerary is full of Mission related adventures. You ll start the first day with a stop at San Gabriel Archangel Mission, and then on to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Second day begins at Santa Barbara Mission, the Queen of the Missions. The itinerary goes on to 6 days and 5 nights full of adventure. Please call Marion Kelley at (858) to make a reservation. The price is $1,499 per person, double occupancy, includes Deluxe motorcoach transportation, 2 Napa Wine Tastings, 5 Breakfasts, and 3 Dinners as well as a Professional Tour Director. You will leave the Mission Church May 14. Marion will give you more details. Martha and Mary Guild, This Guild meets Mondays at 10am in the Mission church. They begin with coffee and prayer and then do light cleaning to the pews, kneelers, railings and sanctuary. Men and women are welcome to join. 5 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, February 3, 2019 Page 5 Migrant Family Assistance Catholic Charities is raising funds to assist legally admitted needy migrant families in reaching their intended destination, usually to other family members in the US. Donations can be made at ShareJourneysd.org/families. Catholic Charities is also collecting clothing, such as long pants, shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and new socks and underwear for men, women and children, mostly in medium and small sizes. Other needed items include backpacks and adult shoelaces. Collection sites are: 1. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Chula Vista, 345 Anita St., (Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm) 2.
