Isaiah 55:7b Week of Prayer, Share the Journey The U.S. Bishops encourage Catholics to participate in a week of prayer and action on behalf of migrants and refugees from October 7 13 as a way to join Pope Francis global migration campaign, Share the Journey, supporting migrants and refugees from around the world. An Invitation to the RCIA Mission San Diego de Alcalá parish cordially invites you to enter the RCIA process this fall and experience a new and enriched meaning to your life through renewed faith and love. This process is for those interested in possibly becoming Catholics and for those Catholics who have not completed their Sacraments. The Mission s RCIA process began September 7 but you may still join us this Thursday at 7 pm in the California Room (lower level of the St. Francis Center). We welcome you and pray that the Lord will bless your journey of faith. Please pray for our parish priests who will be away September on Convocation. Docent Tour Guide Classes - The Mission has dedicated docents who are knowledgeable in our history and share that history with school children and adults who visit our mission. We are in the process of forming a new class and invite interested people to join us. The classes are scheduled to be held six (6) Friday mornings beginning October 13. In addition to learning our history, we will be explaining the significance and history of our artifacts and our archaeological site. Becoming a docent at the Mission promises to be an extremely rewarding experience. Save The Date We will have our first Fair Trade event Sunday, October 29 from 7:30 am to 1 pm in La Sala and the Rose Garden. The Fair will feature high quality, guilt-free food, goods and handicrafts from around the world. Call the Parish Office to volunteer. Benediction Friday, October 6 5pm Mission Church Martha and Mary Guild This Guild meets Mondays at 10 a.m. in the Mission church. They begin with coffee and prayer and then do light cleaning to the pews, kneelers, railings and sanctuary. Men and women are welcome to join. Centering Prayer - Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer in which we experience God s presence within us. This method of prayer is both a discipline and a relationship with God. The focus of this prayer is a deepening of our relationship with the Living Christ. We meet every Monday evening from 7:00 to 8:15 pm in the California Room of the St. Francis Center. If you are new to Centering Prayer, come 15 minutes early to learn the simple method of Centering Prayer. For more info, contact Ardy at (858) All are welcome. The weekend focuses on healing and moving beyond grief in a supportive and caring environment with others that are going through the same feelings. Your generosity is appreciated greatly. 20th Anniversary Celebration of Always Our Children Saturday, October 7 at 11 am Auxiliary Bishop John Dolan and Fr. Lucio Castillo, OMI, will preside at a special Mass commemorating the pastoral document Always Our Children released 20 years ago by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. This is an opportunity for us to gather and journey together in faith and hope as we support, care and love each other. With the growing number of Filipino American parishioners attending Mass at the Mission, interest has been expressed in forming a Fil-Am Group here. Many parishes in the Diocese of San Diego have a Fil-Am group that serve the parish and diocese in various ways, sponsoring events and activities for themselves and the larger community while sharing their cultural heritage. If you are interested in attending a meeting to share ideas, please contact Fr. Peter at the Parish Office by or phone message. Have you always wanted to be an Altar Server? Have you made your First Holy Communion? Are you in the 4th grade or a higher grade? Then you may want to attend one of the Altar Server Training sessions to be held in the Mission Church from 8:00-9:30 am and scheduled Saturday, September 30 or Saturday, October 7. Altar Servers should be mature enough to understand their responsibilities and to carry them out well and with appropriate reverence. Social Action Committee will meet Wednesday, October 4, at 7 pm in the California Room. They are presently organizing an Advent Wreath-making Dinner event for Friday, December 1. All are welcome to help plan this event. St. Didacus Mental Health Ministry is sponsoring a renowned speaker, Luke Maxwell, Tuesday, October 10 at 7 pm. (4772 Felton Street, San Diego.) Luke will present his personal story on teenage depression and recovery. He has spoken to tens of thousands of people and many Catholic parishes in our diocese as part of his mission to break the stigma of depression, bring awareness to the symptoms, and give insight to parents, schools and teens themselves. 5 CALL UPON THE LORD The very first line of today s first reading summons us to seek the Lord and to call upon God. This sentiment is echoed in the refrain for today s responsorial psalm: The Lord is near to all who call upon him (Psalm 145:18a). Saint Paul is the embodiment of someone who constantly sought the Lord. In the excerpt we read today from his letter to the Philippians, we find Saint Paul toward the end of his life, a life he describes as completely consonant with Christ. He writes, For to me life is Christ (Philippians 1:21). To find out what it means to live life completely in accord with Christ we need look no further than today s Gospel.
