We wish to thanks and congratulate our co-chairs Veronica Meyers and Becky Tallarida and their talented committee for our wonderful celebration:18th annual Taste of the Mission.did a masterful job of organizing the event, making our courtyard look elegant and festive and providing us with a delightful variety of food, wineries and breweries to enjoy.the mix of parishioners, both past and present, as well as friends of the Mission from all around San Diego made the evening feel like a joyful reunion.we are so grateful to all of our vendors and supporters who made the event possible.please support them all. Hurricane Relief and Catholic Charities The terrible suffering of the people of the states affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma has been wrenching for the entire nation, as we have witnessed untold moments of devastation, heroism, desperation and sacrifice. For us as followers of Jesus Christ, our response must be two-fold: prayer and action. Catholic Charities USA is the official domestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church. Your donation supports disaster response and recovery efforts including direct assistance, rebuilding and health care services for the hurricane victims. Please visit to learn more. Docent Tour Guide Classes - The Mission has dedicated docents who are knowledgeable in our history and share that history with school children and adults who visit our mission. We are in the process of forming a new class and invite interested people to join us. The classes are scheduled to be held six (6) Friday mornings beginning October 13. In addition to learning our history, we will be explaining the significance and history of our artifacts and our archaeological site. Becoming a docent at the Mission promises to be an extremely rewarding experience. Divorced, widowed and separated persons can register now for a Healing Beginning Experience Weekend Retreat October at Prince of Peace Abbey (650 Benet Hill Road, Oceanside, CA). The weekend focuses on healing and moving beyond grief in a supportive and caring environment with others that are going through the same feelings. Youth Ministry Families - Late registration for High School Confirmation candidates is open from September Incoming 9th-11th graders may begin the two year formation process, which applies to all high school students in Catholic school and public school. The first gathering, a potluck for all high school students and parents, will be this Sunday, September 17, in La Sala after the 5:30 p.m. Mass. With the growing number of Filipino American parishioners attending Mass at the Mission, interest has been expressed in forming a Fil-Am Group here. Many parishes in the Diocese of San Diego have a Fil-Am group that serve the parish and Diocese in various ways, sponsoring events and activities for themselves and the larger community while sharing their cultural heritage. If you are interested in attending a meeting to share ideas, please contact Fr. Peter at the Parish Office by or phone message. Have you always wanted to be an Altar Server? Have you made your First Holy Communion? Are you in the 4th grade or a higher grade? Then you may want to attend one of the Altar Server Training sessions to be held in the Mission Church from 8:00-9:30 am and scheduled Saturday, September 30 or Saturday, October 7. Altar Servers should be mature enough to understand their responsibilities and to carry them out well and with appropriate reverence. 5 FORGIVENESS Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you? Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As Saint Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. Jesus parable in today s Gospel reminds us of God s compassion.
