Tickets for the dinner will be $10 Adults, $5 Children 5-12 years, and Children under 5 are free. Tickets will be on sale after all the Masses this weekend, December 2/3. Mission Choir Christmas Meditation Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17 7:30 pm, Mission Church You are invited this Christmas season to a very special evening at the Mission San Diego. Our Choir will present the 41st Candlelight Meditation Saturday, December 16 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, December 17 at 7:30 pm in the historic Mission Church. This beautiful setting brings a joyous spirituality to the Christmas season, with a concert of traditional and contemporary music and seasonal Scripture readings to celebrate Christmas. For those who have never attended the Meditation, we invite you to fill your heart and mind with the peace and joy of Christmas. The Mission choir is under the direction of Gene Regard. The organist is Howard McCullough. Our annual Giving Tree to supply toys for needy families through Catholic Charities is now in the entrance to St. Francis Chapel. Please take an angel, purchase the item and return it by Sunday, December 17. Please do not wrap the gift. Families from Catholic Charities list of needy families will choose the gifts and volunteers will wrap them. You can also take a tag from the small tree outside the Mission Church (fountain door) and return it to the bin by December 17. Volunteers are needed to help with wrapping and set-up at Blessed Sacrament Monday, Dec. 18 from 8:00am to 5:00pm and Tuesday, Dec. 19 from 8:30am until 3:00pm. Matthew 5:4 Seasons of Hope meets Wednesday, December 6 at 7pm in the Alcalá Room. Grief Support group meets Thursday, December 7 at 10am and/or 7pm in the Alcalá Room. Parish Registration Drive - In an effort to keep our parish records updated, we will be having a two-week Parish Registration Drive after all weekend Masses TODAY, December 2-3 and again December There are many people who regularly attend Mass at the Mission and consider this to be their HOME parish, but we have no record of them. Church guidelines encourage practicing Catholics to register at the parish of their choice or where they regularly attended Sunday Mass. If you are new to the parish or have never done so, please use this opportunity to stop by the table in the courtyard to register. It is also assumed that practicing Catholics contribute to the financial support of their parish. We will send you contribution envelopes upon request, which we record for tax purposes each year. Currently, less than half of our registered parishioners donate on a weekly basis and approximately 80% of our weekly collection comes from 25% of our Mass attendees. With the ever increasing cost of EVERYTHING, we rely upon your goodness and generosity to provide the services we do. As you can imagine, as old and vast as the Mission property is, our upkeep is daunting. Please be generous in your support! If you have not increased your weekly donation for some time, please consider doing so. We profoundly thank those who continually make sacrifices to support the Mission on an ongoing basis! Nativity Scene for Christmas We are grateful to longtime parishioners Linda and John Wagner who donated a beautiful 12 piece Nativity Scene that will be used in the Sanctuary of St. Francis Chapel for Christmas. Last year we purchased several pieces for the Italian-made Nativity Scene that was used in the Mission Church. We would like to enhance it by adding a few more pieces this year. (Fr. Bill wants a CAMEL!! Seriously!!) If you would like to make a donation ($25, $50, $100+), please contact the parish office. Poinsettias We are also asking for donations ($25 per plant) for live POINSETTIAS for our Christmas decorations for SFC and the Mission Church. Thank you for your generosity. Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:7. Hospitality meant something to Jesus, it was more than common custom. Hospitality showed respect for the visitor, it demonstrated the humility of the host. It avoided the temptation to sneer at the less fortunate or the less moral. Do you have the heart of an Usher? 3 Parish Advent Penance Service Monday, December 11 at 7 pm Mission Church Retirement Fund for Religious Help care for elders. Thanks to support from the Retirement Fund for Religious, we are now in a much better position to care for our elders, writes a religious sister. Your donation helps her religious community and hundreds of others provide for aging members and plan for long-term needs. Please give to next week s collection. Envelopes are in the pews. Loose Change Collection THIS Weekend, December 2/3 Benefits Sr. Margaret s Tijuana Ministry Please bring non-perishable food items for Holy Family Food Bank; and large bags of beans and rice for Sr. Margaret s Tijuana ministry. We share donated diapers to Birthright to help needy expectant families. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Social Action Committee will meet Wednesday, December 6, at 7 pm in the California Room. Mission Mothers of Faith Moms of young children come make new friends while the kids play at our regular morning and afternoon Bible Study and Play dates. Martha and Mary Guild - This Guild meets Mondays at 10 a.m. in the Mission church. They begin with coffee and prayer and then do light cleaning to the pews, kneelers, railings and sanctuary. Mission-Aires Christmas Luncheon Tuesday, December 12 Decorate the Christmas Tree 9:30 am in the California Room Meeting and Luncheon at 11 am in the California Room $10 Members $11 Non-Members Christmas is almost here so we ll meet a week earlier to decorate the tree in the California Room. Bring your Christmas spirit and an unwrapped toy to share with the children of Holy Family parish and your singing voice to sing Christmas carols. Our catered luncheon will include ham, scalloped potatoes, corn, garden salad, veggie tray, ambrosia, and for dessert you ll have a choice of chocolate cake and pineapple upside-down cake. Beverage and rolls and butter are included. Don t forget it s the 2nd Tuesday so please sign up and pay in the Gift Shop by 1:00 pm, Sunday, December 10. You ll want to be included in this fun-filled Mission- Aires gathering! La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la! Attention ALL High School Students! We are joining other parishes in the Mission Deanery to hold events once a month. If you are interested in joining us, please contact the Youth Office for more information and permission slips. Upcoming events are: Laser Tag, Sunday, December 17 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Ultrazone; and Praise and Worship, Friday, January 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. at St. Catherine Laboure. All sizes from babies to adults are needed. If you would like to donate jackets for needy families they will be accepting them until December 17. LIKE A CHILD One who aspires to the grace of God must be pure, with a heart as innocent as a child s. St. Nicholas Mission Young Adults will be hosting a Bible Study Wednesday, December 6 in the Fr. Serra Room from 6:15 to 7:15pm. Come and learn and grow in your faith with other young adults! It serves the poor in a wide variety of local settings; meets monthly for Liturgy, sharing and book discussion; consists of volunteers age 50+; and provides spiritual reflection on a one-to-one basis for volunteers. 5 GOD HAS A DIFFERENT PLAN We begin the season of Advent with a heartfelt call for our own repentance. We remember God s faithful love for us, and call upon God to help us to turn back. For behold, you are angry, and we are sinful (Isaiah 64:4). In the first reading and in the psalm, we recall God s promises and lament our unfaithfulness and our guilt. We call upon God s might and power in order to save us. With Isaiah, we ask God to rend the heavens and come down, / with the mountains quaking before you (Isaiah 63:19). Yes, God is faithful to us, because we are the work of God s hands. God is the potter, we are the clay. And yet, our concept of how God will come to save us is rooted in our own expectations of a warrior God who crushes mountains and thunders into our lives with great noise and glory.
