James 2:5 During the month of October, Bishop McElroy will be holding meetings throughout the San Diego Diocese. These meetings will focus on seeking input from people in the pews on the pathway to reform, listening to those who have been victimized by clerical sexual abuse either directly or in their families, and praying for God s grace to be our guide. The series is taken from Word on Fire Catholic Ministries by Bishop Robert Barron. The program will include videos based on the lives of St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Catherine of Siena, Blessed John Henry Newman, G. K. Chesterton and Michelangelo. Join Sister Mary as she shares the remarkable stories of these historical figures. Attention 5:30pm Friday Mass Attendees Due to the Taste of the Mission event in the Mission Courtyard Friday, September 14, the 5:30pm Mass will be celebrated in the St. Francis Chapel. Religious Education Children s R.E. classes begin TO- DAY, Sunday, Sept. 9 at 8 AM. Parents and students meet in La Sala. Adult Volunteers Needed Teachers, teachers aids, office helpers, and special project workers are needed for this year s religious education program. Mission-Aires Luncheon Tuesday, September 11 11:30am in the California Room $10 Members $15 Non-Members Welcome to a new season of Mission-Aires fellowship, entertainment and delicious luncheons. Our first luncheon will be a FREE pizza, salad, and beverage luncheon with ice cream bars for dessert. Entertainment will be a sharing with members about summer vacation adventures. At this first meeting, please pay your membership fee of $15 for the 2017/2018 season, which will entitle you to $10 catered luncheons with beverages and dessert included; non-members will pay $15. Docent Training Mission San Diego has dedicated docents who are knowledgeable in our history and share that history with school children and adults who visit our Mission. We are in the process of forming a new class and invite interested people to join us. The classes are scheduled to be held on six consecutive Saturday mornings beginning September 29. Classes will be held in LaSala from 9 AM to 12 noon. In addition to learning our history, we will explain the significance and history of our artifacts and our archaeological site. Join the Mission Young Adults and grow deeper in your faith and friendships! The group will meet for Bible Study Wednesdays, Sept. 12 (Leadership meeting to follow), and 26, and will have Adoration with music in the Mission Church after the 5:30 Mass Wednesday, Sept. 19. The Young Adults will host a Pancake Breakfast Sunday, Sept. 30, in the California Room at 10 am. It s never too late to join the group. Heritage Day: Come join us February 16-18, 2019 to learn and experience Spanish and Native American cultures. Cultural foods, custom attire, and artwork will be on display. 5 SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase Sunday best has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it s a healthy sign that we re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Copyright J. S.
