Page 2 All of our Meeting and Event dates! Page 3 Feeling Orange?? We need pumpkin supplies for Oct. 5th! Page. 6 Coverage of our Kick-off Meeting on September 20th: Pg. 4 Next Meeting on October 18th, 6:30, with drawings for all door prizes and the Raffle Prize! Nothing scary about a cruise on Lake Norman and it can be yours for $5.00!! Greetings from the President I just can t express how excited I am about our year! Our Membership Drive has brought in new members interested in cultural and community literacy issues, the Dinner Cruise for Two from Queens Landing Raffle is underway, our Programs, Events, and Meetings Calendar has been unveiled, the Literacy Project at SF and Catawba Elementary Schools is continuing, the Foyer Book Bonanza is going strong, the American Girl Doll Kit Project is expanding, and an Electronic Circuits Kit Project will be finalized for presentation at this month s meeting. Many of you will notice a big change in our calendar Fewer meetings have been scheduled, and they are no longer on the same date as our Programs or Events. Hopefully, this will allow us to better enjoy the prgrams and interact with the presenters and with each other, and more can be accomplished at the three meetings dedicated solely to business. Commitees will report at meetings, and members will have an opportunity to fully discuss the issues before a vote is taken. We have important business at the October 18 th meeting, some of which will need your vote. With your input, we will finalize our plans for the next few events, particularly for February s Music Variety Show!! If you know an amateur instrumentalist or singer or group who would like a chance to perform in public, please let us know! This is not a compettion, but an opportunity to perform for a very supportive public audience. Spread the word! This meeting will be at SFT Fire and Rescue on Slanting Bridge Rd due to early voting security at the library. And of course, door prizes will be drawn for members, and the raffled Dinner Cruise for Two will be drawn!! New memberships and renewals will still qualify for a door prize ticket at the library desk by the 14th and at the meeting on the18th! Please make every effort to attend. If you canot attend, please designate a member to pick up your door prize. See you soon, Dewey Remember: the October meeting will be at SFT Fire & Rescue

5 Richard Eller s Documentary Miracle To Be Shown November Program: Documentary on Hickory s emergency polio hospital, dubbed The Miracle of Hickory On Monday, November 14, at 6:30 pm, the Friends, in partnership with the Historical Association of Catawba County, will sponsor a special viewing of the documentary Miracle by Professor Richard Eller. Professor Eller, Historian in Residence at the Historical Association, and Dr. Amber Clawson, Director of the Historical Association, will present the program and answer your questions after we view the film. In the summer of 1944 there was a serious outbreak of polio in the Catawba County area as well as other parts of the State and country. When the hospitals in Charlotte and Gastonia were filled to capacity there was no facility to treat the local patients. The citizens of Hickory decided on a Wednesday to open a hospital and on Saturday the first patient was admitted. The speed at which this occurred and the tremendous effort involved is the source of the title Miracle. The initial building was a stone structure that was already occupied as a summer camp. Army tents were used and additional frame structures were built. Much of the construction and other work at the hospital was accomplished by a massive local volunteer effort. Patients from across North Carolina and some neighboring states came to the hospital in Hickory. The hospital received national publicity including an article in Life magazine. This documentary is the result of an innovative partnership between Catawba Valley Community College and the Historical Association. This remarkable event including stories of the patients, volunteers, and the treatment of polio at the time are featured in this film. Please join us at the Sherrills Ford-Terrell Library to learn more about this fascinating episode in Catawba County history. Scenes like this were the horrifying reality of the polio epidemics of the 20th century. The iron lung breathed for patients whose respiratory muscles were destroyed. Diane Odell, of Jackson, Tennessee, was the last person to depend entirely on the machine for survival. She was stricken by polio at the age of 3, and succumbed 58 years later to the effects of the disease. Before the Salk vaccine was released, parents lived in dread of polio during the summer months, as there was no cure and the virus was poorly understood.
6 Feeling Orange?? It Might Be Because You Have Pumpkins in Mind! The Library will be having two science-related programs during the month of October, and a little help from the Friends will be appreciated! On National Pumpkin Seed Day Wednesday, October 5th the elementary-age kids will participate in experiments and a contest using pumpkin seeds. Donations of pumpkin seeds will be welcomed. Teens will be invited to decorate their own pumpkins on October 26th, so the library needs donations of pumpkins to turn this: into this: Newsletter Submissions: Please news and photo submissions, and community announcements to Joyce O Neal, newsletter editor, by the fourth Tuesday of the month: joyceoneal417@gmail.com Photos of children must have written parent/ guardian consent for publication to the newsletter and website.
