GEORGE AREA: CHIEF ENGINEER-R&D Grant Johnson (435) Demo of the Month April 2018 The demo for the month of April was presented by, a guest turner from Las Vegas who was asked by our vice Prez to give the demo. Ken has only turned for about 3 years but about two years ago he decided to try coloring his turnings with wood dye which initially did not work as well as he had hoped. A little while later through some mutual friends, Ken got the opportunity to turn with Jimmy Clewes which greatly improved his coloring. (Continued on next page)

2 Demo of the Month Ken has since become a fan of coloring and texturing his wood turnings which is shown by pictures of his work on this page and more pictures at the end of the Close Up section below. Ken shared many of his successes and failures in coloring and texturing his pieces along with many interesting ways to apply finish over colored pieces. A video of Ken's presentation will be available at future meetings to show all of Ken's tips and tricks of coloring and texturing.

3 Above left is Eric Walker showing an Aspen bowl with some natural edge. Eric also showed his infinite axis eccentric chuck from a recent workshop and some challenge Easter eggs. Above right is Bob Stringham showing a Walnut/Peach/Red Cedar segmented bowl which looks great. Below left is Leon Olson showing his modified version of his infinite axis eccentric chuck. Below right is Roland Teed showing a large dark Maple natural edge bowl with multiple inclusions. Below left is Jack Gunn showing his challenge Easter eggs and Jack also showed an Aspen bowl with a clear epoxy "floating" rim. Below right is Ken Kofoed showing a Box Elder natural edge pet urn made for a friend.

4 Above left is Grant Johnson showing a concentric ring "Metlitzky style" bowl made from Purpleheart/Maple/Wenge with a very appealing shape. Above right is Grant showing a prototype bowl where he laser pierced shapes into a closed, curved, angled surface. Below is Gordon Gunn showing his challenge Easter egg which is a carved/sculpted egg and an ornately carved candle holder which Gordon commented would have been easier using a laser such as Grant did. Below left is Kevin Truman showing his challenge Easter eggs which unfortunately there are not Close Up pictures of. Below right is Steve Ashworth showing a very large Maple bead illusion platter which he was able to laser part of the bead illusion rather than hand burn all of the lines.

Prez Message I was touched last month on the many ways the turners share their expertise of the craft. This month was a perfect example with of the Las Vegas Woodturners giving a great demo on enhancing our turning projects with alcohol base dye. I asked our Assistant Photographer to take a complete set of photos of all of Kens work that he brought in to show what can be done with dyes. Definitely stop by the photo gallery of the newsletter to check them out. I would like to thank all that are involved in the operation and management of the club. Sometimes we forget the folks in the trenches. Case in point Glenn Pearson who is our normal photographer was going hiking/exploring this past weekend and would be unable to operate the photo studio. A quick call to our youngest member,, and we now have an Assistant Photographer. There wasn t even a hesitation as he grabbed the baton and carried on. Hopefully by April 24th the Southern Utah Woodturners will have over 30 bowls/vases/lidded boxes and platters for sale at Wet Willy s Car Wash on North Main St here in Cedar City. The sales will allow us to build our treasury balance and allow us to bring in professional demonstrator to expand out knowledge of woodturning.
