1 The Bear Growls Order of the Arrow Nendawen Lodge 618 Winter 2018 Chiefly Speaking By Michael Mickey Hess "Arrowmen, I want to thank you for entrusting me as your chief - again will be an exciting and spirited year for our Lodge. This year the Lodge Executive Committee set its goals to include: Achieving Gold on our JTE, raising event membership 5%, and updating our ceremonies and ceremonial grounds. This will be a new and improved year for our Lodge, and I look forward to working with all of you to make it a success. Let me know if there is anything I can do to ever be of assistance to you or your troop." Adviser s Corner By Jay Wilson The Order of the Arrow is a thing of the outdoors rather than the indoors. It was born in an island wilderness. It needs the sun and rain, the woods and the plains, the waters and the starlit sky. - E. Urner Goodman Winter Banquet Recap The Nendawen Lodge Annual Banquet was held Saturday December 9, 2017 at the Camp Kootaga Dining Hall. Highlights comprised of: a Section C-4B report given by the Section Chief Clayton Comer, the National OA Conference report provided by Contingent Leader Ted Cox, the election of new Lodge Officers, and honoring the new Vigil Honor Candidate and Founder s Award Recipients. The Vigil Honor is the highest honor that the Order of the Arrow can bestow upon its members. 3 Congratulations New Founder s Award Recipients! Nendawen Lodge congratulates the following Arrowmen on receiving the Founder s Award. Brady Teets Jacob Smith Introduced at the 1981 National Order of the Arrow Conference, the Founder's Award recognizes Arrowmen who have given outstanding service to their lodge. The award is reserved for an Arrowman who demonstrates that he or she personifies the spirit of selfless service, as advocated by founder E. Urner Goodman and cofounder Carroll A. Edson. OA Troop Representative The Order of the Arrow Troop Representative is a youth serving his troop as the primary liaison to the troop s lodge or chapter. He meets the unit s needs by providing a communication and programmatic link to and from all Arrowmen, Scouts who are not presently members of the Order, and adult leaders. These efforts are meant to assist the unit and its members in achieving the mission of the Boy Scouts of America, and at the same time fulfilling the lodge s role in the Strategic Plan of the Order of the Arrow of being an integral part of the council. By setting a good example, he will enhance the image of the Order as a service arm to his unit. If you are interested in becoming an OA Troop Representative, contact the Troop Relations Vice Chief Ethan Grose, your (both listed in this newsletter), or visit the web page Rep-Form.pdf for the OA Troop Representative Registration form. 4 Lodge Leadership Development Each year, the leaders of Nendawen Lodge gather for a Lodge Leadership Development (LLD) event. The purpose of the event is to build the team of lodge leaders who will guide our lodge for the coming year. On a cold snowy weekend in January, fourteen of our lodge members attended LLD at Camp Kootaga. Nendawen Lodge recognizes the following instructors for their outstanding presentations: Parker Glodowski (Ceremonies), Zach Lynch (Leadership Development), Michael Hess (Lodge and Chapter Management), and the event chairman Christian Krinock. C-4B Section Conclave The annual Order of the Arrow Section C-4B Conclave will take place Friday, June 1st through Sunday, June 3rd, 2018 at Chief Logan Scout Reservation, 3600 Scout Camp Road, Ray, Ohio. The cost will be: $30.00 This is a gathering of Arrowmen from across Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia, and will be a fun time for all Arrowmen. The weekend will consist of ceremonies and dance competitions, vendor displays, and summer-camp style activities such as climbing, swimming and shooting. We will have training opportunities available such as how to get involved with OA High Adventure, and OA activities like regalia-making and drumming. There will also be great food and parties, with a crazy auction Saturday evening. Conclave will be a great time and will also give you a chance to meet other Arrowmen from our area. 5 Area Leadership Training Conference Sections C-4A and C-4B came together last November to conduct the Area Leadership Training Conference (ALTC) for the youth leaders and advisers of their sections. This training is an annual wide-scale event that typically trains 120 participants across the area and is held at Camp Lazarus in Delaware, Ohio. The training sessions comprised of: Becoming a More Effective Leader, Planning and Marketing Events, Rising Stars, and Ceremonies Acting Techniques. Nendawen Lodge congratulates Michael Mickey Hess (Lodge Chief), Parker Glodowski (Ceremonies Chief), Jay Wilson (Lodge Adviser), and Gus Morris (Associate Lodge Adviser) on completion of ALTC. The next ALTC is November 2-4, 2018 at Camp Lazarus Can a Scout or Scouter who completed their Ordeal continue to wear the lodge flap even though they have not paid their dues or attended any events? Hock-Hocking Gus Morris morrisg@hocking.edu Little Kanawha Dave Fletcher Dwj44mag@hotmail.com Stonewall Jackson Michael Sturm Mikemech4313@aol.com Washington Brian Bennett An Order of the Arrow member can always wear their sash and the Universal Arrow Ribbon once they have completed the induction. However, wearing a lodge flap indicates that their current dues are paid in the specific lodge that the flap represents. So, if the individual has not paid their dues, they should remove the flap from their uniform. Source: 8 Feb 2018 / cb-gm / Bear Growls Winter 2018 Page 5 of 5
