2 Dear Sister s in Christ, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. It is always fun to be with extended family during the holidays. I was able to see my Great Granddaughter, Raya, on Christmas day. She is growing fast and soon she will be 9 months old. February is upon us and the weather is very cold. Take some time to sit by the fire, if you have a fireplace, or sit quietly and maybe drink some hot chocolate. This can help you stay warm. But, not all of us can sit at home. Many of us must go out in the cold to work or to a meeting. Let us stay safe as we do it. The PW Women s Retreat is coming in March. Our theme is I Am His from Psalms 139:14. The retreat will be held on March 24 th at First Presbyterian Church of Dearborn. I hope each of you will plan to come. It is a time of reflection and a renewal of faith. Psalm 139:14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works, that I know very well That is something to really think about fearfully and wonderfully made, that makes all of us special in God s eyes. The Churchwide Gathering is being held at the Galt House in Louisville on August 2-5, I hope you will be able to attend. Theme is Arise, shine, you light has come! Hear is a poem from Helen Steiner Rice. The story of Saint Valentine is a legend, it is true, But legends are delightful and very lovely, too. And the legend of Saint Valentine imprisoned in a cell Thinking of his little flock he had always loved so well And, wanting to assure them of this friendship and his love, He picked a bunch of violets and sent them by a dove. And on the violets velvet leaves he pierced these lines divine That simply said I love you and I m your Valentine. So through the years that followed from that day unto this Folks still send messages of love and seal them with a kiss. Because a Saint in prison reached outside his bars one day And picked a bunch of violets and sent them out to say That faith and love can triumph, no matter where you are, For faith and love are greater that the strongest prison bar. 3 Mission Committee Resolve to Make Cents! The New Year is a great time to "make cents" by participating in Cents-Ability - the first small first step in the battle against hunger and poverty. By contributing a few cents for each meal you eat as a way of giving thanks for the blessings you have received, you can help alleviate hunger in our community and in our world. This small act of faithfulness can add up. One person who gives just 2 cents for 3 meals each day will contribute just $21.90 a year. That may not seem like much, but what if 100 people in your congregation contributed? That would provide $2,190 a year! Currently 10 partner churches in our presbytery rely on these funds to provide hot meals and groceries for people in need. Nearly 400 households rely on us for assistance with groceries each month. And, over 750 people receive nutritious meals. All of this is possible in part to contributions to Cents-Ability. This is why we put out the Hunger Fund boxes on the tables at the PWPD Gatherings where lunch is served. You can get Cents-Ability labels from Diane to cover cups or boxes at your church to use on the tables when you host a pot-luck or dinner event. Make some Cents in 2018! Help feed the hungry a few pennies at a time. To learn more about how you can participate in Cents-Ability, contact Diane Agnew, Hunger Action Coordinator at diane@detroitpresbytery.org or by calling , ext Emily Nietering Vice Chairperson Mission Committee Justice and Peace Committee I would like to invite PWPD women to attend the March 9 program of the Grosse Ile Musicale in the St. James Chapel, built 150 years ago with the life savings of a former slave, Lisette Dennison Forth. The March 9 program of the Grosse Ile Musicale, an organization founded 86 years ago, celebrating Women s History Month and also the 150 th anniversary of St. James Chapel, built in 1868 with the life savings of Lisette Dennison Forth, a former slave. Mrs. Forth was just this year inducted into the Women s Hall of Fame in Lansing, Michigan. The program on Friday, March 9 begins at 1 PM with the history of the chapel and Lisette a musical interlude by St. James musical minister, Bobby Ragoonanan talking about women composers of church music and their organ music by medieval composers as well as Bach and Buxtehude. There is a guest fee of $10 which goes to scholarships for seniors in the music program at Grosse Ile High School, A reception follows the program.
