Beginning on the second Sunday in June all of our worship services will meet in the Fellowship Hall. That s because Church Interiors will begin Sanctuary renovations that same week. The work should be accomplished in the months of June - August. At the end of that process we should have a beautiful space that will honor God. Having all three services in the Fellowship Hall will, of course, provide challenges. We will all need to enjoy extra flexibility during that relatively brief time. I want to offer a word of thanks ahead of time to our Ushers and Greeters as they help make this season more orderly and pleasant. Also, thank you to all of our music ministry folks for their cooperation during this time as we strive to look beyond the mild chaotic feeling toward a spirit of holiness. Despite the challenges of everyone sharing the same space, I hope you will enjoy the opportunity the closeness provides for reconnecting with members of the Horne Family that you may not have run into in a while. I would encourage us all to lift in prayer all those who are working on this renovation project for their safety, and for their good workmanship. *** Graduation is a very special time for students and those who love them. And all the pomp and circumstance brings a variety of emotions celebration, anticipation, sadness, and thankfulness. Whether from high school to college, or college to the world, whatever the emotions, it s a continuation of the journey you have been on up to this point. Journeys have watershed moments moments that are defining, moments that help shape the future footsteps of the journey. Graduation is one of those touchstone events. It s during times like these that we need good advice. And what better place to get advice than from the one who cares about you most. The one who has prepared for you and who wants to see you succeed. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to give you hope and a future... (Jeremiah 29:11) As you put your foot in the path before you, just remember the best place to find wisdom for the journey is in God s Word. Remember to turn to him on a regular basis. And may you find continued blessing in the journey. *** Just as you all did such a wonderful job of welcoming my family and me six years ago, I have every confidence J u n e / J u l y, that you will offer the same loving hospitality to Rev. Jonathan Jeffries, to his wife, Heather, and to their children, Sarah Catherine and David. For those of you who have never been a part of welcoming a new pastor into your midst, I read an interesting article recently that offered a few simple ideas that you can do to demonstrate your hospitality. Open your heart and decide that you are going to love your new pastor. Begin praying daily for your new pastor and family, even as you continue to pray for your departing pastor and family. Send cards of welcome and encouragement to our incoming pastor (use church mailing address: PO Box 475, Clayton NC 27528). Introduce yourself to the pastor repeatedly! Wear your name tag. They were a wonderful help to me when I moved here. If you need a new name tag, just sarah@horneumc.net. I give God thanks for the time that we have had together in ministry, and will continue to lift the Horne congregation in prayer as you journey boldly into the future! Grace and peace, Pastor Ross

10 P A G E 10 Events/Community Troop 124 NEWS Recently, Troop 124 purchased and had installed, a memorial bench at Camp Tuscarora, in honor of Chip Wood. Chip was one of the founders of Troop 124 and Pack 124. Chip's dedication, hard work and tireless efforts to the Boy Scouts of America and most notably to the Tuscarora Council, prompted the committee of Troop 124 to purchase this bench so that all that came upon it at Camp Tuscarora, would remember Chip. On April 1, we had a dedication ceremony at Camp T, where Chip's family, Pack 124 and Troop 124 gathered in front of the bench and a few words were said about Chip and what he meant to the scouting program and Horne UMC. Chip may not be with us now, but his legacy lives on in all of the young men's lives that that he help guide and mentor in his years in the scouting program. 11 J U N E / J U L Y, Trustees We are happy to report that the restoration of our beautiful sanctuary, parlor, library and chapel areas will begin soon. Work is planned to start around June 5 and will proceed over the summer to minimize disruption to our worship service attendees. The restoration will include plaster repairs & repainting; woodwork, pew & flooring refinishing; new pew cushions and alter cushions; and new carpeting installation. We are also excited to report that an audio visual screen will also be incorporated into the design that will disappear into the molding/casework when not in use! Other upgrades to our audio visual capabilities in the sanctuary are also planned. You should have received a mailing recently that included pictures of the current state of the woodwork, flooring, and plaster, illustrating the urgent need to proceed with this project. We hope that you will support this exciting effort with your prayers and your financial pledge. A group of volunteers has been formed to temporarily relocate our library to the room 217 on the 2 nd floor over the summer. The architectural firm is finalizing proposed space use options for our church site based on the results of the needs identified in the congregational and committee surveys. More information on this exciting topic will be presented to the congregation soon. It is going to be a busy and exciting summer at Horne this year! -Trustee Team P A G E 11 New Playground Equipment Needed! When was the last time you ve visited the Church s playground? If you re like most of the congregation, it s probably been a very long time. If you ve been out there recently, you would have noticed that the playground equipment is old and in need of a significant upgrade. All of the children of the church really enjoy playing out there on the few pieces of equipment that s left, but those pieces require repairs often and the equipment won t last much longer. While the playground benefits all of our children, the Horne Memorial Preschool is leading a fundraising campaign to completely update the Church s playground area. This project was prompted by a parent that donated $1,000 to a playground fund in hopes of getting something started. Unfortunately, that is not nearly enough to make the playground inviting, fun to play on, and last a long time. Based on estimates, it will take about $16,000. Will you help? Please make checks payable to Horne Memorial with playground in the notation. BEGINNING JUNE 11, ALL SERVICES WILL BE HELD IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL! The Sanctuary, Parlor & Library will be closed for renovations. Entrances that should be used during this time are: door by the office, tunnel entrance, kitchen entrance or side stairwell facing The Clayton Center. Thank you for your flexibility.
