There were so many preparations that needed to be made. I met my roommate. We discussed what we needed in our room. There were school supplies to purchase, telephone plans to ponder, a major to declare, and meal plans to consider. Then orientation and moving day. It was an exciting time mixed with all sorts of thoughts and plans, hopes and dreams. All those preparations were needed to begin that new season in my life. All those preparations were needed to help me put my best foot forward. Our faith journey mirrors life and has seasons of growth and change as the one described above. As we claim and grow in our relationship with God, he provides new opportunity and growth. Lent is one of those opportunities. The Lenten season begins with Ash Wednesday and consist of the 40 days before Easter excluding Sundays. Lent is a time of fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. This is an intentional time for us to reflect where we are in our relationship with God our creator and Lord. This is a time for fasting and prayer. This season provides us the great opportunity to examine our hearts and to be convicted of those places where we need to realign our lives and will towards God. There is no wrong way for us to observe a holy and meaningful Lent, but here are a couple of suggestions. Strive to commit to worship. Besides our weekly Sunday services (8:30, 9:45, 11:00, & 12:15), we invite you to join us for our Ash Wednesday service in the sanctuary (March 6, 6:30 PM), Maundy Thursday service in the fellowship hall (April 18, 7PM), Tenebrae service in the sanctuary (April 19, 7 PM), and our Easter Sunrise Service on the front steps of the church (April 21, 6:30 AM). In addition to these, our Easter cantata will be held on Sunday (April 14) during the 8:30 & 11:00 AM services. Another suggestion is to participate in the ancient discipline of fasting. It could include giving up watching tv, denying ourselves of social media, not listening to the radio in the car, M a r c h, and/or other activities that may be important to us. Fasting allows us to deny ourselves in a way that is a sacrifice so we can experience more of the presence and power of God in our lives. One should not fast unless they intend to spend that extra time with God, and you can spend that time without fasting. A final suggestion includes adding some new or different activity to your daily journey of faith. You might read an inspirational Christian book, commit to a daily devotion, plan a specific daily time to pray, keep a prayer journal, intentionally listen to Christian music, read your Bible daily, and these are just a few of the ways we can focus on our relationship with God. My prayer is that this Lenten season will prove to be meaningful in your walk of faith. Just as we prepare for life s journeys, let us intentionally create habits that encourage us in relationship with God and help us to be the disciples God calls us to be. We look forward to seeing you during this Holy Season! - Pastor Jonathan Jeffries

12 P A G E 12 Married Couples United Marriage Encounter April Here s a question for the married couples of Horne: Have you and your spouse miscommunicated with each other lately? We re not talking about getting your wires crossed about who had agreed to pick up your daughter from dance practice or whether the garage was getting cleaned out this weekend or next weekend. Rather, has the true meaning and intention of what you tried to tell your spouse not gotten through as you intended? Most couples would agree that their marriage is something they truly value. And we make time for what we value our relationships with God, our kids, our parents, our friends and the activities and hobbies that bring us happiness. But many couples do not make time to work on and improve their marriage to the degree that they could. A United Marriage Encounter (UME) weekend is an investment in your marriage. It can help improve those communication issues and bring you closer to God and to one another. Horne members Chris and Farrah Brooks attended a UME weekend in Here s why they think it was worthwhile: The UME weekend is an investment in your marriage. It is an opportunity to focus on yourself and your spouse with no distractions from the outside world. Our marriage became stronger over one weekend than it had been for the previous 24 years because we were given the tools to effectively communicate with each other and reset our priorities. UME is a priceless gift that we highly recommend to all married couples. The next local UME weekend has been scheduled for Thursday, April 11 th to Saturday, April 13 th at Camp Rockfish, one of our Eastern NC Methodist camps. Camp Rockfish is located outside Parkton which is close to Fayetteville. The registration cost is $80 and the additional costs of the weekend have been paid forward by UME couples around the world. To register, go to and click on the Register link at the left. There is a limit to the number of couples who can participate in a UME weekend, so don t put off registering! If you have questions, feel free to reach out to any of the contacts listed below. We d love to see you at Camp Rockfish in April! Invest in your marriage! The two of you and your family will reap many benefits if you do! Put yourself in the presence of God, and as soon as you have said, Lord, I don t know how to pray! you can be sure you have already begun. St. Josemaría Escrivá Seek a relationship when you pray, not answers. You won t always find answers, but you will always find Jesus. Father Mike Schmitz If the lungs of prayer and the Word of God do not nourish the breath of spiritual life, we risk suffocating in the midst of a thousand daily cares.
