If you re like me, you ve gotten tired of looking at the crumbling plaster and chipped woodwork in the Sanctuary building. Others of you were kind enough to fill out a survey a while back sharing your opinion about building and space needs. I want you all to know that none of this has been forgotten. Sometimes, things just take time. I want to thank you for your patience, and I think it s time to begin sharing some exciting plans. There are two main projects going on at Horne right now plans for renovation of the Sanctuary building, and plans for possible building expansion and better utilization of our present spaces. So as not to confuse anyone, let s think of them as Phase 1 and Phase 2 respectively. Phase 1: Renovation of the Sanctuary Building The Church Council has approved a maximum budget of $300,000 for this Phase, which we hope to raise in a financial campaign prior to starting work. The Trustees have been instructed to sign a contract with a company that specializes in church renovations called Church Interiors. Included in the project will be complete repair and painting of all plaster; stripping/sanding and staining of all woodwork; refinishing of hardwood floors; removal, repair, and refinishing of the pews; replacement of carpet; updating the audio equipment; and, installation of new video equipment, including a projector and a retractable screen. We believe these renovations and improvements will not only return the Sanctuary to the beautiful state that we all expect of a space dedicated to the glory and worship of God, it will provide for the needs of future worship as well. The Trustees have not received a final price due to the request by the Church Council that any work address the audio/visual needs of the future. However, once a final price is received, the plan is for a contract to be signed, and our vision is that work would be completed over the 2017 summer months. Once the time frame is confirmed it will be shared with the congregation, and we will have the campaign through which we can offer financial support. Phase 2: Possible Building Expansion and Better Utilization of our Present Spaces This is the Phase that your survey responses pertain to. The Church has retained an architectural firm to lead us in thinking about how we can maximize use of our present building space, while also guiding us in thinking about what additional building space we may need to accommodate ministry into the future. As you can imagine, this is a challenging task. The firm has received input from the various ministry areas in the church. We have provided them with historical and projected data. And the survey responses in which you shared your opinions as well. The firm just recently shared some initial thoughts about what space needs might be possible for us to meet with the land resources we presently have at April, 2017 our disposal. Right now the Trustees have taken the responsibility for working with the firm to come up with some alternatives that balance financial stewardship with the need to provide building space for continued long-term ministry growth. Once some viable alternatives are found, they will be shared with the congregation for feedback. As you can imagine, this is a time-consuming and complicated process as we try to balance all of our church s many ministry areas. There have been needs expressed by the children s ministry, the youth ministry, the missions ministries, the discipleship ministry, and more. The most common need raised by members of the church is the need for a dedicated space for Contemporary Worship that looks and feels like worship space. Again, we will endeavor to keep you updated as this longer-term project moves forward. There are many parts to coordinate, including conversation with the Town s Planning Department. While I know that the information above does not begin to answer all of your questions, I hope that it represents a good start toward communicating present and future plans of our church. Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask me or any member of the Trustees. Thank you for your patience, for your support, and for your prayers. Grace and peace, Pastor Ross
