Time to decorate your home. Time to prepare those special treats. Time to make plans with family and friends. The preparations for this season have always been important to my family and me. I can remember that one of the special times for our family was to set up our tree. It always took place the weekend after Thanksgiving. The first step was looking for the perfect tree. We would drive to a Christmas tree farm and hunt for that special tree. It had to have a great shape. It had to have a certain number of strong branches for the heavy ornaments. We had white pines when I was younger. We tried a cedar tree one year, and finally, settled on the Frasier fir. Some years we would cut the tree and other years we would dig up the tree making sure to keep the ball in tact so we could plant it in the yard at the end of the season. Once the tree made it to our home, then we set it up. Whether we used a washtub base for the ball or the Christmas tree stand for the cut trees, we needed to make sure the tree was straight so it would not fall over. That process included shifting the street, a saw, turning the tree, and usually involved fishing line to hold the tree in the right position. After the tree was in place, we put on the lights. When I was younger it was the colored bulbs, some even containing liquid that would bubble as they heated up. During my teenage years, we switched to the strands of little white lights that we used to wrap every branch. Then we would place the ornaments all over the tree. Sometimes we were lucky to finish in a day, but most times it was a two-day process, especially if we had to dig up the tree. Reflecting back, it took a lot of intentional time and effort to prepare our home for the Christmas season. As we prepare for Christmas this year, may we remember the blessings God has given us friends, family, our church, and of course His gift of love and salvation through Jesus. Let us remember that it is His birth we celebrate with worship, presents, meals and parties. It is His return that we are waiting for when He comes in final victory. It is His coming into this world that means everything. This is the reason for the season. God so loved the world that He sent Jesus into this world to dwell among us, to teach us how to live, and to reveal God s plan of salvation for the world through His life, death and resurrection. Since we spend so much time to celebrate this season, let s also spend intentional time to grow in our faith and be the people God intends for us to be. As we prepare our homes, food, schedules, and look towards a new year, may we allow the Christ child of Christmas to live in our hearts and reign over our lives. May we prepare our lives to be followers of this one, true King - may we speak to Him in prayer like Mary, Elizabeth, and Zachariah; may we give Him praise through the Christmas hymns like the angels; may we share His generosity with those in need like the magi; may we, the faithful, come worship him at church, around our tables, and as we gather with family and friends. May our most important preparation this season be to prepare our hearts and lives to be His followers! May you have a very, merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! -Jonathan Jeffries

11 D E C, / J A N, Trustees P A G E 11 The architectural firm has completed the master plan document addressing proposed space use options for our church site based on the results of the needs identified in the congregational and committee surveys completed earlier this year. The document includes a three dimensional massing model that represents a conceptual exterior view (or shell concept of a building footprint) of an addition to our Church facility which includes conceptual floor plans to address our growing space needs. We are currently utilizing this information to continue our dialogue with the Town concerning the various zoning and planning items that may have to be addressed that would affect this concept thus requiring adjustments to the plan. Please be on the lookout for an invitation to a congregation-wide information session to present the master plan concepts in the very near future. Thank you for your continued support and prayers for our church as we move forward with addressing our growing facility needs! New Playground Equipment Needed! This project was prompted by a parent that donated $1,000 to a playground fund in hopes of getting something started. Unfortunately, that is not nearly enough to make the playground inviting, fun to play on, and last a long time. Based on estimates, it will take about $16,000. Will you help? Please make checks payable to Horne Memorial with playground in the notation. Place clean items in the basement drop-off zone closet, clearly marked with Hope s Closet in a bag or box. Thank you for your generous support of the Alternative Gift Fair! Thanks to your generosity, the Alternative Gift Fair collected close to $5,000 to support a variety of local and global ministries that make a huge impact in the lives of children, youth, and adults. The gift of hope is what the Christmas season is all about and we thank you for sharing that gift in our community and around the world! Human Relations Day Sun, Jan. 14 The Human Relations Day Offering supports neighborhood ministries through Community Developers, community advocacy in the US and Puerto Rico through United Methodist Voluntary Services, and work with at-risk youth through the Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program. Write checks to Horne Memorial with HRD in the memo! Join The Horne Habitat Team! Construction Begins Jan. 6 Plans are currently on-schedule for Habitat to begin construction of a new home in Clayton in January. Our congregation is partnering with Habitat and a coalition of 13 other faith communities in the area to help with this build. The home will be constructed over a 10-week period from January through March, and will be located on East Hinton Street, about a mile from the church. Adults & youth 16 years and older are welcome to participate; no experience required! There are many jobs to complete no previous experience or special skills required! Saturday work dates for Horne Memorial are January 6 (wall-raising), February 17, and March 17 from 8 AM 4 PM. Habitat will be adding additional work dates during the week, usually on a Thursday or Friday. We will share those dates as soon as they are available. For more information on getting involved in this local project, please contact Sherrie VanderVeen, sherrie@horneumc.net or (919) , ext. 131.
