2 THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Is 55:10-11; Ps 65:10, 11, 12-13, 14; Rom 8:18-23; Mt 13:1-23 or 13:1-9 [My word] shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11 As a parent, I have often been discouraged when I felt that my words to my children were apparently uttered in vain. Stepping on LEGO pieces, barefooted, was a painful reminder that someone didn t clean up their toys. Dirty clothes resting on the side of a chair while wet running shoes sat in a doorway were vivid reminders that some of the words from me and my wife did not achieve their desired effect. I suspect that God may feel the same way about us at times. Try as we may, we regularly fail to listen and adhere to God s word. Our goal as parents is to raise children who will be responsible, caring adults capable of living happy, healthy, faith-filled lives. Today s first reading indicates to me that God s will for us is much the same. We are told very clearly that God s word will achieve the end for which I sent it in our lives. We just need to let it. 3 During our nursing home ministry, we sometimes observe that the residents have a feeling of uselessness. Once working life is over and the children are grown people wonder of their purpose. Fr. Terry addressed this during a recent homily at a nursing home. He spoke of how grateful he was for these patients showing up to work. When the faces looked at him quizzically, Fr. Terry explained: We do not retire from doing God s work. God s work is communion - with Him and with each other. Every moment of their retired life they give to Mass, prayer, and living their Catholic faith. They continue to work. What a gift and an opportunity for the sick, homebound, elderly, and disabled! There are busy working people right now that are unable to attend this Mass, or struggle to find the free time to sit in prayer. What a blessing for our nursing home parishioners to have the time to devote to their spiritual life! At the Masses following this homily, the residents have a renewed sense of purpose! It has been amazing to watch how they truly heard the homily, and changed themselves as a result. As the wheelchairs start lining up around our small altar, I will inevitably hear someone say, it s time to go to work. Wishing everyone reading this a great day at work! St. Joseph Parish depends on the proceeds to fill in many financial gaps that occur during the fiscal year. That s why we ask every parish family to participate. During the year, we all benefit. SJC VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: St. Vincent de Paul Mission Store and Bread For Life Food Pantry are both in need of volunteers - if you need community service hours, this is a great way to fulfill that requirement AND help the needy in our community! Teenagers welcome! The Mission Store needs rag cutters, cashiers, sort room workers and people to just help hang clothes and pick up in the store/stock. Food Pantry needs volunteers to walk around with the clients and help them shop, computer receptionists, and stockers. Please consider helping out YOUR store and food pantry. We truly make a difference in the community and you can be a part of this wonderful ministry! "Meals From the Heart" could also use more volunteers. Meals are delivered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 2pm until delivered.
