2 The Epiphany of the Lord Is 60:1-6; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13; Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6; Mt 2:1-12 Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw His star at its rising Matthew 2:2 My 12-year-old son and I were in the car, on a dirt road through a forest, on our way to a swimming hole. Wait, he said, Is that an owl? I stopped the car and looked where he was pointing. All I saw were shades of green leaves and brown trunks and branches. But he insisted. And, after a minute or two, I saw it too a large owl, sitting on a fallen log, far away from the road. We sat quietly and watched. At one point, the owl flew higher and closer, never taking its huge eyes off us. I would have just driven on by. But my son, always alert to the mysteries that nature holds, had been paying attention, so he was able to see. And so Magi, wise and observant of God s ways in the world, were led by the light to his son. Lord, you have revealed yourself to us. May I pay attention and follow the light of your love. 4 The Epiphany of the Lord 1907 History On December 29, in the year of our Lord 1907, 71 Catholic gentlemen came together in Bardstown, Kentucky to establish Council 1290 of the Knights of Columbus. Although the founders are long gone, many of their names live on in our community as well known and popular family names, like Boone, Bowling, Greenwell, Hamilton, Haydon, Hurst, Mattingly, Smith, Spalding, Talbott and Willett. Since our council s history is incomplete, we thought it would be interesting to share some history of the day with you. Pope Pius X was the leader of the Catholic Church. Theodore Roosevelt was President of the United States. If you wanted any news of the world or the U.S., you would have had to read the local paper, since radios were just beginning to be sold commercially. Television was years away. A well known and respected scientist by the name of Albert Einstein had just introduced his Theory of Relativity and air flight was in its infancy, with the Wright brothers having flown only a few years before. In 1907, French cyclist Paul Comu flew a twin rotor helicopter. A magician by the name of Harry Houdini escaped from chains under water in just 57 seconds and New York City saw its first taxi cab. A small delivery company by the name of United Parcel Service began in Seattle, Washington. Meanwhile, in England, a retired military general by the name of Robert Baden-Powell wrote a book called Scouting for Boys, that launched a worldwide movement known as the Boy Scouts. And in Russia, the first Russian Revolution was taking place. In 1907, Oklahoma became the 46 th state of the United States. A couple of peoples births went unnoticed, except for maybe by their parents, but later in life much note would be taken of them, as Katherine Hepburn and Gene Autry were born. Color photography was invented, but in black and white. Ben Hur was the year s most popular movie. Rudyard Kipling received the Nobel Prize in literature and the Chicago Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. San Francisco was still rebuilding from its tragic earthquake of 1906, and another tragedy was in the making, as the plans for an unsinkable ship by the name of Titanic were being developed. It would be 5 more years before its tragic maiden voyage took place. In 1907, a man who would later become a Kentucky giant was still a runt, as Adolph Rupp was only 6 years old. The University of Kentucky basketball team had a tough year that year, going a staggering 3 wins to 6 losses. Meanwhile, here in Bardstown and Nelson County, according to the Bureau of Agriculture, the population of Nelson County was 19,110 people. Livestock far outnumbered people, with 3,463 horses, 1,731 mules, 7,338 cattle, 13,267 sheep, and 11,007 hogs. Crops grown included tobacco, wheat, corn and alfalfa. Farm labor was available for about $20 per month, while an acre of farmland went for about $15. Timber tracts were available for anywhere from $2 to $10 an acre. There were 11 banks and 41 churches in Nelson County. As 1907 ended, a group of Catholic gentlemen from Nelson County came together on December 29 th to start a new organization. We can be certain that this event passed with little fanfare given that the Knights of Columbus was only 25 years old. However, our Brother Knights came together on that night, a night much like tonight, strong in spirit and eager to create a fraternal order that could serve their Church and their community. The weather that night might have been cold and there may have been a trace of snow in the air, but they left their homes that day to sign their names to a constitutional roll, just as we continue to do today. Moreover, in so doing, they set in motion the wheels of a charitable organization that has helped thousands of Nelson Countians over the past 110 years. It is certain that those gentlemen did not realize that they were making history, but today, we understand that they did and are committed to continuing their vision and commitment to all of the Parishes. May God bless them and you for being a part of the Knights of Columbus history here in Nelson County. Statistics today: Current Members: 283 Years of Service: 60 Years: 6 50 Years: 4 40 Years: Years: 35 Total Years of service: 4787 Knights of Columbus Family of the Year 2017 David and Judy Beaven have been chosen as our Family of the Year for their outstanding volunteer support to the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Parish, St. Vincent Depaul Mission Store and Food Pantry, and the local Community.
