Stewardship thru $ 682, The Lord said to Abram... I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. Genesis 12:1-2 In Baptism, God says the same thing to each of us. Stewardship is our response to our baptismal call. The stewardship lifestyle can unlock our full potential.
2 THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT Genesis 12:1-4 Psalm 33:4-5, 18-20, 22 2 Timothy 1:8-10 Matthew 17: of the kindness of the Lord the earth is full. Psalm 33:5 With the huge amount of mean, judgmental and hostile messages on social media and the continual barrage on public newscasts regarding violence and abuse, we might quickly question the psalmist s statement that the earth is full of the kindness of the Lord. But if we make a deliberate attempt to be aware of kindness as we move through our day, we will be surprised how much of this virtue we find and experience. A few simple words can generate kindness: Thank you. I didn t mean it. Let me assist you. I m sorry. You first. I understand. It s okay. I forgive you. Let s go together. You have my sympathy. I love you. Yes, divine kindness is reflected everywhere if only we are determined to both give and receive it. It only takes a small amount of awareness and other-centeredness to have the Lord s kindness come alive. Sr. Joyce Rupp, OSM, Living Faith, Mark Neilsen, Editor According to the Lenten Rule, Catholics are to abstain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent as an act of penance. However, some Bishops are making an exception for St. Patrick's Day. Archbishop Kurtz is giving the following direction about eating meat on this day and it will be in this week's Record. "In honor of St. Patrick's Day, Catholics in the Archdiocese of Louisville may choose to transfer the abstinence from meat on Friday March 17 to another day of the week." 3 ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ~ BARDSTOWN KY MARCH 12, 2017 The DIACONATE ORDINATION of David Farrell, Robert Barnell, Brandon DeToma, Kien Nguyen, and Minh Vu will be celebrated by Archbishop Joseph Kurtz on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. The people of the Archdiocese of Louisville are welcome and encouraged to attend this joyful celebration. For more information, contact Sr. Sarah Yungwirth in the Vocation Office at Elder Abuse in Kentucky Elder abuse is often a silent crime. Most of us never see it because most victims are abused behind closed doors by their own family members. And too often, people who do see it choose not to get involved because it s none of my business. Given work some volunteers do in homes of the elderly, it s important to understand the signs of elder abuse and report any suspicions you may have. Elder abuse is a crime that knows no boundaries. Elder abuse can occur anywhere, anytime; it can affect all races, religions, ethnicities, cultures, and socio economic groups. It can occur in community settings such as private homes or in an institutional setting. The definition of abuse varies and mandatory reporting laws vary from state to state. There is no uniform reporting system, therefore cases of abuse, neglect, and exploitation often go undetected each year. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, the New York State Elder Abuse Prevalence Study found that for every case known to programs and agencies, 24 were unknown. Kentucky is a mandatory reporting state (reference KRS ). If you suspect elder abuse, you are legally required to report it. You can report abuse at the 24-hour toll free hotlines at or Calls can be made anonymously. During State Fiscal Year 2015, the Kentucky Department for Community Bases Services received 30,037 calls for reports concerning adults 60 years and older. These calls were screened and 12,618 met acceptance criteria for an adult protective services investigation under KRS 209. Learn to recognize the following signs of self neglect, care-giver neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse: Neglect: 1). Torn and dirty clothes that are not appropriate for the weather 2). Hoarding 3). Lack of glasses, dentures or hearing aid 4). Bedsores 5). Little or no food in the refrigerator, or decayed and moldy food Physical Abuse: 1). Appears frightened or withdrawn 2). Never leaves the house; never allowed visitors 3). Never mentions family or friends Sexual Abuse: 1). Upset when changed or bathed 2). Fearful of a particular person 3). Loss of bowel or bladder control. Emotional / Psychological Abuse: 1). Sudden dramatic change in behavior: appears withdrawn, depressed, hesitant to talk openly 2). Care-giver won t let victim speak for him/herself 3). Care-giver scolds, insults, threatens victim Financial Abuse: 1). Use of Automated Teller Machines - ATMs - when the person has no history of using ATMs or cannot walk or get to an ATM 2). A recent Will, when the person seems incapable of writing a Will 3). Rights signed away on legal papers without understanding what the papers mean. ~ Archdiocese of Louisville Office of Safe Environment. Martine Bacci Siegel, MSN, RN, CNS. Phone: msiegel@archlou.org
