1 ORDINARY TIMES of Bull Shoals United Methodist Church Special points of interest: Pastor Pete s Notes Birthdays & Anniversaries Coming events Minutes of meetings The Bible says all humanity came from one individual, Adam. The interesting thing is, science agrees. A few years ago National Geographic sponsored a program soliciting several hundred thousand samples of DNA. The result was the conclusion that all humans are descended from one individual. The other day in our Spirit Matters class we were discussing the unity of all people and Terry Tubbs referred to this DNA conclusion. As I ve noted to you in sermons, the scholars of ancient Judaism discussed & debated virtually every aspect of the Old Testament over the span of hundreds of years. In their discussions, they not only agreed that everyone was descended from one individual, they even came to a specific conclusion as to why humanity came from one man. We ve all been exposed to the idea that good families give rise to good individuals. We ve also seen that sometimes this is true, sometimes it is not. To the ancient scholars, however, since all came from the same individual, no one could claim they were good or bad because of their ancestry. From a moral and ethical standpoint, family heritage did not convey any special privilege. Good and bad originate in the individual s free-will personal choices. The result of the ancient Jewish scholar s conclusions we are responsible for our behavior. Good and bad originate within us as we work out our own salvation in fear and trembling. I do believe, however, that we can all rely on the power of one family member to teach us right from wrong, guide us in our decision making, and give us the strength to always do the right thing. We of course have to go back further than Adam, back to our original parent, God the Father.

10 BULL SHOALS CHURCH COUNCIL September 17, 2017 Minutes The Church Council met on September 17, 2017, with 12 members present. Chairman Wade Fox called the meeting to order at 2:05 p.m. The July minutes were approved as printed, and the August minutes of a called meeting were approved as read. Amy Parnell presented the proposed 2018 budget, which passed. She presented the financial statement, which was approved and filed for audit. Margaret is transferring the accounts to a new program so some of the account names have changed. The lap robe account will be combined with the prayer quilt account. Cathy Long reported the UMW had successful UMW Sunday services at both churches. They will donate $200, including an electric can opener, to the kitchen appliance fund. Their next event is the roast beef dinner on November 4. Wade Fox reported a successful rummage sale, which collected approximately $1000. Their next event will be the chili cook-off in January. Amy Parnell reported the Youth will host the September potluck with a tailgate theme. The motion was made and seconded that the tickets to the Passion Play be given to any youth and family wanting to use them then to sell the remaining tickets to interested parties at half-price. The motion passed. Connie Zonick reported that the Worship Committee had received requests for gluten free bread at Communion. She said the committee has purchased wafers for this purpose. Wayne Mowry reported that the SPRC is working on completion of job descriptions. They have completed the non-taxable pastor s reimbursement and have forms for reporting. Everette Long reported that the Trustee s need approximately $1600 to reimburse the anonymous donor for the initial loan for the kitchen appliances. They have completed approximately 96% of the inventory and have installed tetherball poles and a basketball goal for the youth. We have received a donation of three lots between Lynette and Walnut, but we pay the taxes. The committee recommended changes to the Facilities Usage policy. The recommendation passed. Since the handicap improvements are complete, the committee recommended that we move the remainder of the handicap funds to the building and grounds fund. The recommendation passed. Amy Parnell reported that Trunk or Treat will be held on October 31 from 6-8 p.m. We have received several and scheduled several booths. Pastor Pete reported the nominations committee will meet soon to fill positions to be presented at Charge Conference, which will be held at Yellville UMC on November 5 at 2 p.m. Sharon Arra reported that the Food Pantry is having a great deal of success at the Flippin Annex. She called attention to the Octoberfest fundraiser. Dwan Garrison expressed a need for an event calendar to be posted in the coffee room. This would prevent us from scheduling events close together or on top of each other. She also mentioned the face book account, which is not being utilized. Vickie Fox was appointed administrator of the account. Vickie Fox reported that the Nurture/Witness Committee is working on Christmas decorations. On December 2 at 10 a.m., we will have a hanging of the greens service followed by cookies and coffee. Pastor Pete reported that many churches have given monetary donations rather than items to Ingathering. The Council reached consensus that we would take monetary donations until one week prior to the November deadline. Pastor Pete reported that the National Christian Foundation will make a substantial donation to our church. These funds are under his oversight and are to be used solely for community outreach. The next Council meeting will be on November 19 at 2 p.m. The next Finance Committee meeting is October 8. Submitted by Cathy Long, Secretary
