January 13, 2019 ~ The Baptism of the Lord CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Community Martin Luther King Celebration: Mon., Jan. 7 p.m., St. Dominic Church Bible Studies: Wednesday Morning Bible Study meets from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the parish office meeting room. Monday Evening Bible Study meets from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the church basement. Choir Rehearsal on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. & Hand Bells at 7:30 p.m. in the church basement. The school board meeting set for Wednesday will be postponed to a later date. Dedication/Memorial Bricks: Stop by the Garden of Paradise at the rear of the church to see the dedication/ memorial bricks. Brick orders are being taken for engraved bricks (dedications or memorials) at a cost of $150 each. Contact Sonya at the Parish Office for details. Don t miss the boat on the next brick order; get your brick order in soon! The St. D Newspaper Recycling drive is held the second Monday of the month, weather permitting. If you live within city limits & participate in our newspaper drive, please have your papers by the curb no later than 9 A.M. This will help accommodate the volunteers who need to do pick-up in the morning hours. Pick-up times vary from driver to drive. There is no pick-up during the months of July & December. Pepper at ~Stewardship Reflection (The Baptism of the Lord)~ After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, Heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. Luke 3:21 Our stewardship journey begins in the waters of baptism. It is through the waters of baptism that we are given a new life and become disciples of Jesus. As Jesus disciples, we are called to build the kingdom of God with the gifts God has given us.
