1 February 2017 Knightly Knews Knights of Columbus Council #11353 St. Vincent de Paul Church Fort Wayne, Indiana Volume 19, Issue 2 A Message from your Grand Knight... Brother Knights, This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad. I m not good at remembering where various sayings like this one are located in scripture, but I do know the jist and the importance. I try to apply the meaning to as many aspects of my life I can. For instance, this year Christmas Eve seemed to me to be another cloudy, damp, gloomy, raw north-east Indiana winter day. I like to garden, but when busy sometimes gardening gets put on the back burner. I usually winterize my garden long before this date, but I hadn t yet pulled the rest of my carrots from the ground. So to defy the bad weather, I wanted to find out about the condition of those carrots. To my surprise, the ground wasn t frozen solid, and with a little prompting from my shovel the carrots were removed from the ground. To me, this was a very joyous moment. Not a religious moment for others, but it gave me pause to thank the Lord for yet another blessing, an opportunity to work & play in the garden that was still yielding! Take a look at the photo. These men don t appear to be of fine caliber. Even after receiving a good scrubbing, though some clean up well, others still look rather dingy. Some look like what you might expect, others draw funny second looks. Physical characteristics range from tall & lean, to short and stubby. Inferences are made: this one is athletic; that one probably not so much; this one appears prominent in the group; that one not so much. Etc, etc. If we stop right at this point, half of them don t stand a chance, just waiting to be overlooked and discarded! We ve all heard that we shouldn t judge a book by the cover. Read a little deeper. Have we really gotten to know our fellow men? Have we talked to someone new, peeling the top layer to see what is hidden? Sometime we have to go further, inviting them to make changes. It is likely the invitee has as much need as those needing to receive the invitation. The invitation allows actually both the inviter and the invitee the chance to carve out of themselves and their lives the potions that are not the best and not needed, allowing the good and the needed portions to flourish. By the way, the carrots (the invited) are in the fridge crisper, waiting to be peeled and carved. They taste just fine. I believe I (the inviter) am a healthier man for it. I d like us all to do some gardening of men, and invite other men to be Knights. Their health and yours depends on it. Your Leadership Thoughts for February "Before you can understand, motivate, and lead others, you must first understand, motivate, and lead yourself." "Although you cannot control circumstances around you or the attitudes of other people, you can choose to be in complete control of your own thoughts, attitudes, and actions." Paul J. Meyer Membership Report... What! It's February already? Oh Yeah, Superbowl, ProBowl, and Nascar??????? WOW! Okay, let's focus... The challenge facing every brother Knight today is to ensure that our Order and everyone of our councils are places whose doors are open and whose members invite their fellow Catholics to a life of fraternal communion and charity. It is also the responsibility of every Knight to deepen his fraternal communion with true charity and unity, so that whoever encounters the Knights of Columbus will encounter a community of brothers motivated by The Joy of the Gospel." -Excerpt from Knightline- When is the last time you asked someone to join the Knights of Columbus? YOU can make an immediate impact on the effectiveness of our council by asking and helping just 1 or 2 catholic men to become involved as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Help our Council grow by new members between now and June This will help us to meet our council goals for the membership year... Don't forget, don't be afraid, and don't delay! ASK when you attend events, ASK before and after church, and ASK by making a few phone calls. If you have any questions about recruiting new members, please contact Darryl, Buddy, Mark or Dan. "At our council meeting on January 18th, I talked about the upcoming 4th Degree Exemplification to be held in Carmel, Indiana on March 11. As many of you know this degree is called the Patriotic degree of our order. All of our 3rd degree brother knights are encouraged to take this final step in completing their journey to full Knighthood in the Knights of Columbus. As a member of the 4th degree, you join other Sir Knights as being part of the most visible arm of the Knights of Columbus when wearing the regalia of this degree. As a member once told me about the symbols of the regalia worn by the 4th degree, some people think the hat (the chapeau) looks weird-did you know that was an admiral's dress chapeau. It was worn by Christopher Columbus, the sword symbolizes the cross of Jesus. The cape we wear, that is to remind us of the cloak Jesus was given by the soldiers as Jesus went to Calvary. If you are interested in becoming a 4th degree, let Brent Mosley or Mike Pranger know. Information for the Fourth Degree Exemplification in Carmel on March 11, 2017 can be found at: under the link Degree schedules." All 4th degree members are invited to attend our Assembly meetings held every second Tuesday of the month in the basement of the Mother Theodore Guerin Chapel at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. It s a great feeling when a teacher, coach or fellow parent compliments you on your child. We all know that raising children these days is no easy task, especially when the values we re trying to instill in them concern for others, accepting responsibility for their actions, saving money rather than spending it seem to run counter to what society is trying to teach them. Yet these are exactly the values that tend to draw compliments from teachers, coaches and fellow parents. We also know that the best way to teach is by example. If you carry enough life insurance to protect your family, and if you share - with those of your children old enough to understand - why that s important, you re exhibiting and imparting many of the values you hope your children will absorb. You ll show them by example that you love them and are concerned about their welfare. You ll show them that you take your responsibility to provide for your family seriously, and that you want to make sure they re provided for even if you re not around. And you ll show them that investing money in your life insurance protection is more important than the new set of golf clubs you might want, the newest and best home theater system you ve had your eye on, or whatever else you might be sacrificing to pay the premiums. Sure, they ll probably roll their eyes at you as you re explaining this, and they ll certainly moan and groan if they can t get the newest CD, video game or piece of clothing. But they learn from what you do just like they learn from what you don t do. What lessons do you want to teach them? I want to meet with you to review your existing coverage. Based upon that review, and on the comprehensive needs analysis that I ll perform, free of charge, we ll be able to put a plan in place that will meet your needs, goals and budget. 5 Culture of Life Report... Allen County Right To Life March For Life... Was held on Saturday, Jan. 21, to peacefully seek an end to abortion. Attendees participated in a rally at the University of Saint Francis Performing Arts Center and then marched through the streets of downtown Fort Wayne, ending at the E. Ross Adair Federal Building. Speakers at the rally included author Peter Heck, Rep. Jim Banks (IN-3) and Dr. Andrew Mullally of Credo Family Medicine. Clergy and medical professionals in attendance were recognized for their contributions for advancing a culture of life. ==================================================================================================== Bishop Rhoades Franciscan Seminarian Fund... Every year in the December January time frame our Diocesan Bishop Kevin Rhoades hosts a drive to fund the education of the Franciscan Brothers who enter the seminary. Unlike diocesan seminarians who receive financial support from the diocese, Franciscan brother s education to become priests is not funded by the diocese. Therefore Franciscan seminarians receive help via this fund. The St Vincent Knights in past years have always done a good job donating to this fund. This year was no exception. All the councils of the area, with a number of Our council s Knights in attendance, met with the Bishop and the Franciscans on New Haven Ave on the evening of Tuesday January 10 to present to the Bishop over $7,000. Because our council met the criteria of averaging $20 per Knight, the council received a gift personally from Bishop Rhoades, a very beautiful replica of the San Damiano cross. Since the KoC exists to support our faith, this cross in turn will be a gift to St Vincent s, to be hung in a location TBD. A short description of the significance of this cross St. Francis of Assisi was praying before this cross when he received commission from the Lord to rebuild the Church. The Franciscans cherish this cross as the symbol of their mission from God: to commit their lives and resources to renew and rebuild the Church through the Power of Christ. You are invited to look up information about this cross. It is called an icon cross because it contains images of saints and people related to Christ s crucifixion. The Bishop and the Franciscans are so grateful for the awesome and continuous support from the K of C. Not just in prayer, thought and word, but via action, as we were told by the Bishop that when he came to Fort Wayne approximately 7 years ago, 6 Franciscans came with him. Now 46 are present, a phenomenal growth. The Knights have been there to support them along the way. Dan Nix ==================================================================================================== Vice President Speaks at March For Life WASHINGTON On Friday, Jan. 27, just days after the presidential inauguration, Vice President Mike Pence spoke to tens of thousands, including members of the Knights of Columbus, gathered to participate in the 2017 March for Life. The event has taken place every January since 1974, on or near the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion throughout the nation. The event kicked off with a rally sponsored by the March for Life Education and Defense Fund, which was born out of the grassroots movement that gathered on the first anniversary of Roe v. Wade. At the rally, Vice President Pence, the highest ranking government official to attend the event during its 44-year history, said, I am deeply humbled to be the first vice president of the United States ever to attend this event. On behalf of President Trump, he also thanked the attendees for their stand for life and their compassion for the women and children of America. Citing the Mexico City Policy that restricts funding for abortion services to foreign countries, Pence assured pro-lifers that the Trump administration will continue to devote its time and energy to making America a country for life, announcing that President Trump will name a pro-life Supreme Court nominee next week. We ve come to a historic moment in the cause for life, he said. Compassion is overcoming convenience, and hope is defeating despair. In a word, life is winning in America because of all of you. He added, Be assured that along with you, we will not grow wearied, we will not rest, until we restore a culture of life in America for ourselves and for our posterity. The rally began with the introduction of Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life Education and Defense Fund, by Deputy Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly, who referred to the march as the largest annual civil rights gathering in the world. After greeting the crowds, Mancini welcomed Kellyanne Conway, senior counselor to President Trump. I am a wife, a mother, a Catholic, counselor to the president of the United States of America. And yes, I am pro-life, Conway told the crowd. It is such an honor to stand with the vice president of the United States and with students from places near and far to defend the unborn. This is a new day, a new dawn for life. Why are we here? What does it mean to stand together? she continued. It means to protect and promote the most precious gift in the world, the gift of life.
