1 January 2009 Knightly Knews Knights of Columbus Council #11353 St. Vincent de Paul Church Fort Wayne, Indiana Volume 11 Issue 1 A Message from your Grand Knight... Brother Knights, With this year drawing to a close, we all must look back and reflect on how we advanced God s word in our lives. Did we love our neighbor as ourselves? Did we love God? Did we do what is necessary to promote life? Are we making exceptions in our actions for God s way of life? If we are not doing what is needed, then what new resolution are we going to make for the coming year. As we move forward, we must take stock in all that we accomplished and challenge ourselves to do more. I believe in this group of Knights. We do so much at St. Vincents that sometimes it is mind boggling. Whether it is with the Scouts, the direction of traffice, Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers, building maintenance, grave yard cleanup, or just being at Mass we do allot. This past Sunday, I looked around and took pride in the number of Knights I saw at Mass. Great job! My heartfelt thanks to all who support this great organization, and give of their time and talent. I look Women s Auxiliary Are you interested? forward to serving you in the coming months. We have several first degrees coming up. Please invite people you know who are not Knights so that we can add them to this great organization. By now, we all have received our bill for membership. Please remember to pay your dues promptly. Keep in mind, that whether or not you pay your dues, the council still gets billed for your membership. If you have any questions, please see myself or Mike Pranger. I pray for this country and our newly elected leaders that God may inspire them to remember His word. I, also, pray for our men and women serving this country in our military. If they are away from home, please return them safely. May the peace of the New Born King be in your minds and hearts. Ed Waldschmidt, Grand Knight Attention Ladies! Is your husband or significant other a member of the Knights of Columbus? Have you ever wished that you could be involved in some way with this wonderful ministry? I have given some thought to this and I would like to form a women s auxiliary. The auxiliary would not be affiliated with K of C but would be able to support them in fundraising. The auxiliary would also be able to have their own fundraisers and donate the proceeds to other ministries within St. Vincent s. If you would be interested in participating in a women s auxiliary, please contact Janet Waldschmidt at (260) or (260) Inside this issue: What s Happening 2 Membership Report 2 Officers / Chairmen 2 A Baby s Hug 3 4th Degree coming... 3 Free Throw contest 3 Field Agent s Report 4 Pro Life Report 5 Right to Life March: Jan 24 5 Family of the Month 5 Our Prayer Line 6 Calendar of Events 6 When You Hear God s Voice Today, Harden Not Your Heart! 3 A Baby's Hug A good story and reminder for this time of year! We were the only family with children in the restaurant. I sat Erik in a high chair and noticed everyone was quietly sitting and talking. Suddenly, Erik squealed with glee and said, 'Hi.' He pounded his fat baby hands on the high chair tray. His eyes were crinkled in laughter and his mouth was bared in a toothless grin, as he wriggled and giggled with merriment. I looked around and saw the source of his merriment. It was a man whose pants were baggy with a zipper at half-mast and his toes poked out of would-be shoes. His shirt was dirty and his hair was uncombed and unwashed. His whiskers were too short to be called a beard and his nose was so varicose it looked like a road map. We were too far from him to smell, but I was sure he smelled.. His hands waved and flapped on loose wrists. 'Hi there, baby; hi there, big boy. I see ya, buster,' the man said to Erik. My husband and I exchanged looks, 'What do we do?' Erik continued to laugh and answer, 'Hi.' Everyone in the restaurant noticed and looked at us and then at the man. The old geezer was creating a nuisance with my beautiful baby. Our meal came and the man began shouting from across the room, 'Do ya patty cake? Do you know peek-a-boo? Hey, look, he knows peek- a-boo.' Nobody thought the old man was cute. He was obviously drunk. My husband and I were embarrassed. We ate in silence; all except for Erik, who was running through his repertoire for the admiring skid-row bum, who in turn, reciprocated with his cute comments. We finally got through the meal and headed for the door. My husband went to pay the check and told me to meet him in the parking lot. The old man sat poised between me and the door. 'Lord, just let me out of here before he speaks to me or Erik,' I prayed. As I drew closer to the man, I turned my back trying to sidestep him and avoid any air he might be breathing. As I did, Erik leaned over my arm, reaching with both arms in a baby' 'pick-me-up' position. Before I could stop him, Erik had propelled himself from my arms to the man. Suddenly a very old smelly man and a very young baby consummated their love and kinship. Erik in an act of total trust, love, and submission laid his tiny head upon the man's ragged shoulder. The man's eyes closed, and I saw tears hover beneath his lashes. His aged hands full of grime, pain, and hard labor, cradled my baby's bottom and stroked his back. No two beings have ever loved so deeply for so short a time. I stood awestruck. The old man rocked and cradled Erik in his arms and his eyes opened and set squarely on mine. He said in a firm commanding voice, 'You take care of this baby.' Somehow I managed, 'I will,' from a throat that contained a stone. He pried Erik from his chest, lovingly and longingly, as though he were in pain. I received my baby, and the man said, 'God bless you, ma'am, you've given me my Christmas gift. I said nothing more than a muttered thanks. With Erik in my arms, I ran for the car. My husband was wondering why I was crying and holding Erik so tightly, and why I was saying, 'My God, my God, forgive me.' I had just witnessed Christ's love shown through the innocence of a tiny child who saw no sin, who made no judgment; a child who saw a soul, and a mother who saw a suit of clothes. I was a Christian who was blind, holding a child who was not. I felt it was God asking, 'Are you willing to share your son for a moment?' when He shared His for all eternity. How did God feel when he put his baby in our arms 2000 years ago. The ragged old man, unwittingly, had reminded me, 'To enter the Kingdom of God, we must become as little children.' If this has blessed you, please bless others by sending it on. Sometimes, it takes a child to remind us of what is really important. We must always remember who we are, where we came from and, most importantly, how we feel about others. The clothes on your back or the car that you drive or the house that you live in does not define you at all; it is how you treat your fellow man that identifies who you are. 'It is better to be liked for the true you, than to be loved for who people think you are... 4th Degree coming to Fort Wayne To all 3rd Degree members that are in good standing with the council, there is a 4th degree coming up in February. If you are interested, there is a Wine and Cheese Night that Anthony Wayne Assembly 239 is hosting. This is an information meeting about what the 4th Degree is all about. The time and date for this meeting is January 9th, 2009 at 7 pm at Knights of Columbus 451 off Reed Road. (4th Degree is scheduled for Feb at the Marriott Inn.) K OF C INSURANCE: Making a difference for life. To help educate consumers about the need and value of adequate life insurance protection, the Life Insurance Market Research Association (LIMRA) has published the following five facts. These statistics are certainly worth considering. Fact 1: Nearly three-fourths of North Americans agree that life insurance is the best way to protect against premature death of the primary wage earner. Fact 2: Twenty-four million households have no life insurance protection at all. Almost one third of adults have no life insurance protection. Fact 3: Forty-four percent of all households either don t own life insurance and believe they should, or own like insurance and believe they need more. Among those that already own some life insurance, 40 percent believe they don t have enough. Fact 4: One-fourth of primary wage earners feel they do not have a plan in place to provide a decent standard of living for their family if they died tomorrow. Twelve percent of families would immediately have trouble meeting everyday living expenses and another 15 percent would have difficulty keeping up after several months. Fact 5: People would like to discuss life insurance with a qualified professional agent. They believe that buying life insurance is an important and complex financial decision. Half find it difficult to decide how much to buy, and 43 percent worry about making the wrong decision. I d like to meet with you in your home, at your convenience. I ll work with you to make sure your family is protected. As a Brother Knight you can trust, I ll take the stress and worry out of the buying decisio Ed Eckersall, Jr., MBA, MDRT, FIC or Knights of Columbus insurance has been "Making a Difference for Life" for more than 120 years. Who knows, maybe your picture in a Council event is highlighted. Tired of bailouts? Well they aren t going away anytime soon! Now the abortion industry wants one! We all knew that Planned Parenthood was going to have a special seat at the table in the Obama administration. Well it hasn t taken them long at all to roll out their extreme agenda. Tell your Senator today that Planned Parenthood should not get a bailout. Abortion groups have submitted their 50 page proposal to the Obama-Biden transition team. At the top of the list? More taxpayer dollars for abortion organizations like Planned Parenthood. How much more? Over 1.5 billion dollars more! The Abortion Bailout Package: $1 BILLION dollars in taxpayer funding for International Abortion Groups like UNFPA, an international aid organization connected to coercive abortion as part of China s coercive onechild policy $700 million in taxpayer funding for Title X Health Clinics (aka your local Planned Parenthood affiliate) Repeal the Hyde Amendment Vastly expanding federal taxpayer funding for abortions Include Abortion coverage in any taxpayer-subsidized national health care program Expand taxpayer-funded abortions through the Peace Corps program It is an outrage for Planned Parenthood to expect you to give your hard earned dollars to fund the destruction of innocent life. Join citizens across our great country in telling their Senators to keep your tax dollars out of the abortion providers. Tell them to Stop the Abortion Bailout! For Life, Marjorie Dannenfelser Susan B. Anthony List President Right to Life: March in Fort Wayne, Jan 24th Please plan now to attend the 35th Annual Right to Life March that will be held at the Scottish Rite Center, January 24, 2009 starting with David Bereit speaking at noon. The March will follow the speech and proceed to the Federal Building. Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so love the people who treat you right, forget about the ones who don't, and believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it. Family of the Month David Scheumann has been a member of St. Vincent's parish for two years and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council at St. Vincents. He lives at 3318 Vantage Point Dr., Apt. 2A, Fort Wayne, IN and works at the Walgreen's drug store. He is a graduate of Woodlan High School and holds two bachelor degrees in communication from Purdue University. David has a brother Don and a sister Karen Stovall. He served 3 years in the U.S. Army infantry division and was stationed in the Mohave Desert and Panama. David is also a member of the St. Vincent's men's club. He feels the Knights of Columbus gives him the opportunity to meet new people who support his life and faith journey. The Knights of Columbus are honored to present this family as our Family of the Month. If you know of a family that you think should be considered for Family of the Month (a family member does not have to be a member of the K of C), please give Ed Waldschmidt or Jim Cox a call or message to tell him why the family should be chosen to receive this honor.
