1 June 2015 Knightly Knews Knights of Columbus Council #11353 St. Vincent de Paul Church Fort Wayne, Indiana Volume 17, Issue 6 A Message from your Grand Knight... Brothers, The current fraternal year is drawing to a close. It is a time to reflect on your participation in council activities throughout the year and consider what you might do in the upcoming year. Ask yourself a few simple questions. Have I attended at least one meeting during the past year? Have I volunteered for one or more activities? Have I asked myself why I joined the Knights of Columbus? We offer many opportunities for you to become involved in the council throughout the year. Help is always needed at our parish breakfasts and dinners. We are always looking for new men to step forward and help with traffic control at the Sunday masses. Assistance will be needed with the upcoming cemetery project. We will once again be assisting with the COLA Kids Camp put on annually by the Franciscan Brothers Minor. We will also be assisting with the reception for Deacon Matt Soberalski who will be ordained a priest on June 6, Opportunities are plentiful and too often, the burden is placed on just a few members. With over 300 members of record, we should have no problem finding help when needed. June will mark the final election of officers for the fraternal year. Please consider attending the June 18th meeting and participate in the election process. The meeting will also be a pot luck supper with the Ladies Auxiliary. Bring your spouse along with a side dish or dessert to the meeting. Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the Rosary to follow. As we close this fraternal year, I do want to thank my fellow officers, all of our members, family volunteers, and the Ladies Auxiliary for their support throughout the year. It is my sincere hope that all will have a safe and enjoyable summer as you spend time with family and friends. Most home builders will tell you that in order to build a proper building, it takes a clear vision, long-term planning, following a master plan, sincere actions from all involved, and dedication to a long process that will ensure that all the actions effectively come together. This same type of process must be applied to developing an effective organization such as the Knights of Columbus. Engaging new and current members into the Knights of Columbus is also a well thought-out vision that relies on council members to help the Council to grow on a continuous basis. How long has it been since you asked someone to join Council 11353? This is one way you can directly help our Council grow between now and June This will help us to meet our council goals for the membership year. In order to grow our council, we need your help to recruit new members!!! OUR NEXT 1ST DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION IS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 4th, 2015 AT 7:00PM Please ask men (ages 18 and over) to join the Knights of Columbus! 3 Knights of Columbus Shirts... - WIND SHIRTS AND POLOS Order your Council shirts directly from our supplier Several members have made inquiries regarding the availability of polo shirts. I have been in contact with Jen Ramos who is our supplier here in Fort Wayne. Members may order shirts directly from her and make their own arrangements for pickup. This will make things easier for our treasurer as we ran into some difficulties last time we ordered for the council as a whole. Here is the information on the shirts: PORT AUTHORITY DRY ZONE OTTOMAN POLOS (K525) Cost: $35 ($38 for 2X and up) with K. of C. logo an council number embroidered on the left chest. Personalizing it with your name will cost an additional $6. Available colors: White, Stone, Maroon, Dark Green, Royal, Navy, Black, Iron Grey, Engine Red. V-NECK RAGLAND WiND SHIRT Cost: $30 ($40 for 2X and up) with logo an council number on the left. Again, personalization is another $6. Available colors: Forest Green, True Navy, Black, Maroon, True Rad, True Royal, Kelly Green. There will be a 7% sales tax added to all purchases. Orders may be placed by contacting: JEN RAMOS (260) design@gottawearrad.com MAKE ALL CHECKS PAYABLE TO: SOLTICE - Football Frenzy We had a very successful Football Frenzy fundraiser last year thanks Brother Richard Cieslinski. Proceeds were used to help support our seminarians. This year we are getting an earlier start with the project. Tickets are available for purchase at just $10 each which is half the price of last year s tickets. Weekly prizes will total $200. We are encouraging members to sell twenty tickets each to make this even more successful than last year. Each week for ten consecutive weeks, you will have the names of three different NFL teams on your ticket. If your three teams score the most or least number of points in any week, you win a cash prize. First place each week wins $100, second place $50, third place $20 and 4th place $10. For the lowest score, the weekly prize is $20. For more information, contact richard.cieslinski@gmail.com. - Happy Birthday!... The Council is always looking for new activity ideas that will bring our council closer together. While much of our efforts are centered around our charitable works, we do not want to neglect families. If you have any thoughts on family activities throughout the year, please let one of the officers know and we will see if it can become part of our regular calendar State Vocations Award... St. Vincent Council was recently awarded the Father Michael J. McGivney Award for the best reported Vocation Activity at the 2015 K. of C. State Convention in Indianapolis. The Council was recognized for several activities in support of seminarians including the organization of the World Wide Seminarian Run for Faith, purchasing clergy collars for Fr. Andrew to give to potential seminarian, raised funds in support of both the diocesan seminarians as well as members of the Franciscan Brothers Minor and provided continued support to the seminarians from our own parish. Live On or Leave On Money As your working life progresses, your priorities will likely shift. Many major life events (weddings, births, education costs for children, etc.) are probably behind you. Your focus shifts to those golden retirement years when you can enjoy your hobbies, grandchildren, travel or simply relax at home. During my career as a field agent, I ve had members ask me what they should do with a sum of money they are looking to dump somewhere for safe keeping. First, I tell them that there is no safer place to put their money than with the Knights of Columbus. No one has ever lost money using our retirement products. There are no risks assumed by you, the members. Second, I ask the member a question: Is this money to live on or leave on? I ask this because the answer makes all the difference. If you want a guaranteed flow of cash in retirement, one of our annuity options might meet your needs. If this money is intended as a gift for grandchildren, to assist your wife in the event of your passing or to give to your favorite charity, a Single Premium Whole Life policy might be the best product. When it comes to decisions about your finances and your family s future, don t leave things to chance. Discuss the options with a brother Knight who knows how to help. Someone who s helped many other Catholic families not too different from yours. Someone who can offer you life insurance, long-term care, disability income and retirement products backed by the strength and security of an insurance provider rated among the top in the industry. Call me today to set up a time to meet. You ll only regret that you didn t call sooner. Keith C. Praski, FICF/MDRT Phone: (260) keith.praski@kofc.org Page 4

5 ProLife Report... Our Order s steadfast defense and promotion of a Culture of Life is grounded on our ultimate assurance that in the natural law written in the heart of every person is the recognition that human life is sacred from its very beginning to its end. In the depths of our consciousness, human intellect knows that the very source of its existence i.e. human life ought to be protected and celebrated. In that regard, the message of the Knights of Columbus extends far beyond our Order and our religious creed; it is a universal message that every person of good will can come to affirm. The right to life is unlike any other right. It is the most basic right and the condition of all other personal rights, constituting the foundation of every human community and the political community itself. St. John Paul II famously noted that if human life itself is not respected, then respect for all other rights for example, the right to health, to marriage, to culture, to religion is false and illusory. Human rights of every kind are incomprehensible without the right to life. Our Order, therefore, joins the universal Church in acknowledging the dignity of human life and in its efforts to achieve legal and constitutional protection for every human person at the international, national, state, and local levels. Cemetery Project Update... Thanks to the efforts of Brother Jim Cox, the much awaited cemetery project is set to begin. We are looking for Knights willing to assist with the straightening of the headstones in the old parish cemetery. Actual work in our cemetery will begin on June 13 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. We will work on consecutive Saturdays until the job is complete. Finished: We have re-stained the cross in the cemetery. This is physical labor and if you have teenage or college-age sons willing to help, they are more than welcome to join in this effort. Please contact Jim Cox via jcox200@frontier.com Server recognition Party... We are planning a cookout and presentation of certificates to those servers who have assisted on the altar this past year. We will have it on Thursday, June 11th at 6:00 p.m. prior to our officers meeting. In addition to the servers, we can expect one or both parents to be present. I will be sending the invitation out through the parish office and hopefully, we can get a count a few days ahead of time. We will be serving burgers and hot dogs. I just need to confirm whether we will meet in the Spiritual Center or the Life Center. - Leaders Wanted... Are you currently an office or director in our Council? Have you wondered what it takes to assume a leadership position with the Knights of Columbus? If so, please take advantage of the K. of C. Fraternal Council Leadership Webinar. The training will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Please use the following link to register for this event: If you have any questions regarding this event, please call Gary Nolan, Vice President of Fraternal Training and Ceremonials at or gary.nolan@kofc.org. We are in need of several new directors for the upcoming fraternal year. - Tootsie Roll Drive... This year, we raised a total of $1, in one day which is a record for our council. It was Held on Saturday, May 9th. Thanks to Kroger s Dupont Road for letting us used their store. - - Did You Know... As a Knight of Columbus, you created the $25 million K of C Vicarius Christi Fund the earnings on which are conveyed annually to the Holy Father for his charities. Since its inception, this fund has generated more Than $52.8 million for the Pope s good works, and the corpus remains intact. Volume 17, Issue 6 Page 5
