1 January 2015 Knightly Knews Knights of Columbus Council #11353 St. Vincent de Paul Church Fort Wayne, Indiana Volume 17, Issue 1 A Message from your Grand Knight... I trust that each of you, along with your families, have had a blessed Christmas and are now looking forward to the beginning of a New Year. This is the time when we tend to make resolutions...resolutions that are often never kept or only kept for a short period of time. It may be a commitment to losing those few extra pounds you put on during the holidays. Maybe it s going to the gym on a regular basis. We all know how easy it is to set aside these resolutions and continue with our life as we always have. I would like you to consider making a resolution that perhaps is a little easier to keep. Can you commit to attending at least one council meeting? Can you commit to participating in at least one activity during the upcoming year? Can you volunteer when the Council needs your help? More important than these resolutions, can you commit to giving an additional five minutes to the Lord each day? Some of you have already stepped up to the plate and help on a regular basis. Recently, however, we have struggled to fill volunteer slots for different activities. We only had a handful of members who completed the necessary background check and submitted the paperwork to be certified by the diocese under the safe environment program. This is a necessary step for any Knight and their family members who want ot assist with any of the youth programs we have throughout the year. The process is simple and once certified, you do not have to renew for five years. There is a link to the safe environment program on the parish website. We are always looking for additional volunteers to assist with traffic control during the Sunday Masses. We need help at our parish breakfasts and dinners. Assistance is also needed when we host the annual free throw contest in our gym. We are always looking for volunteers willing to donate blood during our quarterly blood drives. That being said, I want to thank all of your who stepped up to the plate and assisted with gifts for our two Christmas families. Your generosity helped bring the true spirit of the season to two young single mothers and their children. I know these families are extremely grateful for what you have done. Our intent is to continue supporting projects such as this as well as the annual turkey collection. The officers are open to other ideas you may have as to how we can reach out into the community and truly be Knights in Action. We do have a couple of opportunities coming up in January. The first will be the parish breakfast to benefit the school. This will be on Sunday, January 25th. We also have a Spaghetti Supper scheduled for Saturday, January 31st. Please consider volunteering when the call goes out. Vivat Jesus, Dennis Fech, Grand Knight "Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort." "The challenge facing every brother Knight today is to ensure that the Order and every one of our councils are places whose doors are open and whose members invite their fellow Catholics to a life of fraternal communion and charity. It is also the responsibility of every Knight to deepen his fraternal communion with true charity and unity, so that whoever encounters the Knights of Columbus will encounter a community of brothers motivated by The Joy of the Gospel." -Excerpt from Knightline Help our Council grow by 30 new members between now and June This will help us to meet our council goals for the membership year... OUR NEXT 1ST DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION IS SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 5TH, 2015 AT 7:00PM!!! YOU CAN HELP! When is the last time you asked someone to join the Knights of Columbus? ASK when you attend events, ASK before and after church, and ASK by making a few phone calls. 3 Ladies Auxiliary News... Dear Ladies, God Bless You and Thank you for all of your hard work on the COLA kids project. We made 73 kid s Christmas a little brighter! Remember we will be having a Jan meeting and Baby Shower. There is a special need for diapers of all sizes. We will play cards and games and make it a Shower atmosphere! Please plan on coming and Celebrate the new year and New Life. Phone a friend pick up a friend! Looking forward to seeing many of you! Happy New Year! Connie Dailey Pastoral Council News... Father Dan has asked that I share with our membership some of the upcoming projects that may interest you. This is an extension of his recently published five-year plan for the parish. Sometime this month, the parish will send out a request for individuals interested is serving on one of three ad hoc committees. These include: Repurposing of the old rectory - individuals with a background in architecture or the building trades are especially needed to serve on this committee. Nursery/Daycare/Pre-school: what should be the scope, purpose, and location for this program. Tabernacle/adoration chapel/future perpetual adoration chapel: This committee will look at adding a second tabernacle in the sanctuary as well as reconfiguring the seating in the existing reservation chapel. Longer term is addressing the future construction of a perpetual adoration chapel in the old cemetery. Please consider whether you have something to offer as the parish moves forward with its long-range plan. Our Annual Meeting with Bishop Rhoades... The annual meeting with Bishop Rhoades and the Franciscan Brothers Minor will take place on Wednesday, January 7th from 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. The meeting is held at the friary located at 2610 New Haven Ave. We begin the evening with prayer in the church followed by a light meal. We then have a brief program after which we present the bishop with our donation to assist with the Franciscans Seminary Fund. If you are interested in attending, please let me know by January 3rd. You may dgf1950@gmail.com. Rekindle The Fire Men s Conference...What is it?... Meetings are scheduled every third Sunday evening 7 PM. in the Parish Hall. This is for all men in the parish wanting to increase their spiritual life, to live as Catholic men filled with the spirit of Christ. All men are welcome. Schedule in your calendar the Men's conference Saturday Feb 7th in South Bend. We are planning on scheduling one or two buses leaving Fort Wayne going to South Bend. We are all called to be men of prayer, to become more like Christ. This means more than doing the minimum of just attending mass on Sunday. We need to know Jesus in a very personal way, as a very close friend. This comes about by reading and reflecting on the bible, by spending time in prayer, frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament, praying the daily rosary, and spiritual reading. Consider setting your alarm early to say the rosary every Friday morning in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 6 AM or the men's prayer breakfast every third Friday at 6 AM in the spiritual center. If any men are interested in forming a men's Bible study, contact Roy Coolman or Dana Achor St.Vincent Council KC Free-Throw Contest Here are the dates and times for the upcoming Free Throw Contests at St.Vincent School, 1720 East Wallen Road, enter Door 6. Much better than many of them had on Thanksgiving, I'm sure! I wish you all a very Merry Christmas! Thank you for helping uplift the hearts of 73 children this Christmas season!!
