1 January 2013 Knightly Knews Knights of Columbus Council #11353 St.Vincent de Paul Church Fort Wayne, Indiana Volume 15 Issue 1 A Message from your Grand Knight... Brother Knights, Here we are at the beginning of a new year. As we look back at 2012, it has been one of the most challenging times in recent history for our country and our faith. There are no easy fixes to the many issues that lie before us, but we do know that we must continue to stand proud and strong with our church defending her in all aspects. This month we have the opportunity to show our support for life in one of its most vulnerable stages, by participating in the March for Life held on the National Mall on January 25, 2013 commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision on abortion. Or, if you can't travel to DC, the March for Life in Fort Wayne is on Saturday January 19th. The rally is at noon at the USF Performing Arts Center (previously the Scottish Rite Center) and the march through downtown immediately follows. There is nothing more honorable that a Knight can do than to be known as a defender of life. We've finished up 2012 with some great council activities. Our Christmas party was one of the best I think we've ever had. Helping unload a truck load of food into the Silence of Mary food pantry was a great community activity. Over twenty Knights and family members made quick work of unloading, shelving, sorting and packaging food and personal care items. The COLA Christmas party for the kids that live near the Franciscan Brothers Friary was a great activity that I'm sure will become an annual event. Thanks to Mike McCarthy and his crew for doing a great job. We finished up with a 1st Degree bringing in two new members into our council: Doug Schumick and Thomas Westerlund. Please congratulate them and make them feel welcome. Coming up very soon we will host the KC Council Free Throw Competition January 20th in the St V Gym at noon. Please let us know if you would like to help. It's a lot of fun! Blood Drive on Saturday January 26th. Please consider donating if you can. KC Family Breakfast on Sunday January 27th during Catholic Schools Week. Don't forget to join us on Wednesday January 9th for our member meeting in the Spiritual Center for good food, the rosary and fellowship. The ladies auxiliary will be joining us for a potluck dinner and the rosary. Keep up the good fight... Vivat Jesus! Welcome to 2013! We hope you will make the best of the year ahead. Now is the time to ask potential members to join the Knights of Columbus! You can be a big influence in giving others the opportunity to join our Council!!! Did you know that existing members are the best influence on getting potential members to join the Knights of Columbus???? Please consider asking at least one male parishioner, 18 or older and in good standing with the church to join the Knights of Columbus. Help them complete their application and get it to one of the Council officers. It's that easy! We are asking each member of Council to give one or more parishioners the opportunity of a life-time Membership in the Knights of Columbus! The Knights of Columbus have FIVE main objectives: 1) To support the church. 2) To build fraternal bonds through social, religious, educational, and athletic events. 3) To provide comfort and assistance to the sick, disabled, and needy members and their families. 4) To reach out to meet community needs through programs of charity and service. 5) To provide for the financial security of our members and their families through our fraternal insurance program. Offering this opportunity is easy YOU JUST HAVE TO ASK MEN THAT YOU KNOW IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO JOIN THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS. If you have any questions, contact Darryl Smith, Buddy Weihe, Mike McCarthy, John Becker, or Bruce Cadwell. 2012/2013 Officers... 3 Ladies Auxiliary News Hello Ladies and Happy New Year! Our first meeting of the new year will be held on Wednesday, January 9th. Our night will begin with us enjoying a potluck meal with the men at 6:30 p.m. Rosary will be recited at 7:15 p.m. and our meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Our goal for the meeting will be to tie about ten more blankets. We had material left over from our Christmas project. I will cut the strips on all the blankets before the meeting. All we will have to do is tie the blankets. Please bring all your tying tools. We will decide at the meeting what organization we would like to donate the blankets to. I look forward to seeing you all at the meeting. God's blessings to you and your family in the new year. LeeAnn Pollock, KofC Ladies Auxiliary Coordinator, lpollock@grandwayne.com - The Sojourners... The group is currently meeting at St Vincent every third Saturday morning of the month in the Church Nursery after the 8 A.M. Mass. We are inviting any Knight to come to the Sojourners meetings and join us as we share our faith journey as sons and fathers. Our goal is to better understand the Fatherhood of God and encourage each other to live this out as much as is humanly possible. Stephen R. King St. Vincent Council Free Throw Contest... All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2013 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held Sunday, January 20th at 12 o'clock noon in the St. Vincent de Paul School Gym. The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. All boys and girls 10 to 14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. Last year more than 120,000 sharpshooters participated in over 3,600 local competitions. All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent. If you would like to help work this fun event, obtain entry forms or need additional information contact: Tom Solosky at or Bruce Cadwell at Christmas at COLA... Being a part of Christmas to help those less fortunate brings such blessings! A special thanks to all the Knights, the Women's Auxiliary and Bishop Dwenger students for all their help in purchasing gifts, making blankets, and collecting toys for the Children of Lady of Angel's community. The first annual COLA Christmas party in their parish hall was a big success and included over 50 children and their parents who met Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus. Santa called each child by name to hand out gifts. The room was decorated, having two Christmas trees and plenty of food for all. Thanks to our own chef, Andy and his helpers, who put all the food and desserts together. As they started, Santa was asked a difficult question: "Did he have a 'Believer Meter?" He answered, "I can tell by looking into your eyes that you believe in me". The Brothers helped a great deal, lead the group in prayers, and told stories. It was a heartwarming and special day for all of us that we will always remember! A few days later, a parent wrote a note thanking everyone because this was the first Christmas her kids have had in several years. God delivers! Thanks everyone for all your help! Michael P. McCarthy A Letter of Gratitude from the Silence of Mary Home... Over twenty Brother Knights and members of the Ladies Auxiliary showed up on December 9th to help unload a truck of supplies shipped in from the Harrisburg Mother Home. The following letter was received in thanks for our service. Dear Saint Vincent's Knights & Ladies Auxiliary, Thank You! We are speechless. The outpouring of kindness visible in your labor is a true testament to you living your faith! The Silence of Mary Home would like to offer our gratitude, we would thank you all individually, but there were so many people that we could not begin to name them all. The work you did today would have taken the board members an unthinkable amount of time to accomplish. You had a 16' truck unloaded in less then an hour on top of that you put together over 200 hygiene kits, got all the food & clothing sorted and put away and delivered food to the Father Solanus Casey food bank. To see all those Knights lined up from the street all the way through the house was a sight to be seen unlike any other. So on behalf of the Silence of Mary Home board of directors we cannot thank you enough. Yours in Christ, The Silence of Mary Home, Fort Wayne Volume 15 Issue 1 Page 3

5 Pro-Life Report... March for Life Jan 2013 The March for life in Washington DC in January is fast approaching. The State Council again is asking for all of the Council s cooperation in sponsoring one of your members to attend the March with the Indiana Knights of Columbus. If every Council sent one Knight each, there would be over 170 members attending. Couple that with those other Knights that will be going and the wives, offspring, and other interested individuals we could easily send 10 buses to this all-important event. The threat to our Catholic Faith by the legalization of abortion is grave indeed and Catholics, Knights in particular, need to stand-up for their Church. The Culture of Life committee asks that you participate in recruiting Council members, family members, Parishioners, and neighbors so that Indiana can indeed live-up to the reputation that we have as being a Pro Life state. Vivat Jesus K of C Trip: Tentative Schedule 2013 Wednesday January 23rd - Depart from one of our locations throughout the State, approximately 8:00 pm. leaving on tour bus. There will be several stops along the way. Thursday, January 24th Arrive in Washington approximately 10 am; tour the DC mall for 3 hours, proceed to motel. Leave for the National Shrine of Immaculate Conception for tour. Friday January 25th Breakfast at the motel, board bus, pick-up lunches, proceed to Rally, join the March when it begins, then return to motel and have dinner. Saturday, January 26th Breakfast at the motel, board buses and head home, arriving about 8 pm. The Cost: $275 Cost includes: Round-trip on touring bus, Motel for 2 nights, double-occupancy, 2 breakfasts, Box Lunch, Friday night dinner & celebration. You will come home with an unbelievable feeling of euphoria having participated in this event. See Bruce for application information Annual Dues have been mailed.. Dues notices and Gibault raffle tickets should have arrived by now. If you can please send in your payments promptly. If you are having difficulty paying your dues this year please give me a call. We have a program with in our council where help can be given to our brothers in need, after all Charity is the first lesson we learned when joining the Knights. Ken Bloom Financial Secretary ( ) - Christmas at Gibault... Once again this year we teamed up with the kids from the Religious Education program at St. Vincent's to provide toys for the kids at Gibault. Some of the residents at Gibault have to remain at the facility over Christmas. So each year Knights Council 541 in Terre Haute hosts a Christmas party for these kids and asks for additional help with presents or cash for the pizza party they host. We had a late start with this project this year but Debbie Blackburn the Religious Ed director for St. Vincent's was up to the challenge. Having lived in Terre Haute, Debbie was familiar with the good work done there and was willing to help us out. So the kids donated, Debbie collected and on December 14th my wife and I delivered nearly 150 gifts ranging from Matchbox cars, dolls to art supplies to Gibault. A big thanks to Debbie and all of the kids and teachers from the Religious Education program. Gibault Envoy Ken Bloom - Making Choices is Your Greatest Power... While your character is formed by your circumstances, your desires can shape those circumstances. The one thing over which you have absolute control is your own thoughts. It is this that puts you in a position to control your own destiny. Nature is constantly at work around you. Character and destiny are her handiwork. She gives you love and hate, jealousy and reverence. You have the power to choose which impulse you follow. At any time you can decide to alter the course of your life. No one can ever take that away from you. You can do what you want to do and be who you want to be. Your greatest power is the power to choose. - - Two-Thirds of Americans Prefer Merry Christmas Greeting... A new survey finds Americans by a wide margin prefer the traditional Merry Christmas greeting to the non-specific Happy Holidays. The Knights of Columbus-Marist Poll found that two-thirds of adults nationally - 66 percent - think people should say, Merry Christmas, while less than one-third - 29 percent - believe the appropriate greeting is Happy Holidays. The proportion that prefers Merry Christmas has continued to inch up over the past two years. Last year, 64 percent thought Merry Christmas was the more appropriate greeting while 31 percent preferred Happy Holidays. In 2010, the number preferring Merry Christmas stood at 61 percent. Five percent remain unsure. Volume 15 Issue 1 Page 5
