3 Ladies Auxiliary Hi Ladies, Thank you all so much for your donation of homemade blankets and baby items that were collected at the Ladies Auxiliary meeting in July. The baby items and crocheted blankets were distributed to A Hope Center, who sent a very nice note of thanks and appreciation. Unfortunately, the Hope Center was not able to accept the fleece blankets with fringe (a choking hazard for infants) so those items were donated to the Women's Care Center, who also greatly appreciated them. Blanket donations is an ongoing project, so keep making them! The Ladies Auxiliary's next meeting will be held on September 14th (not a potluck). We will join in the rosary at 7:15 with the K of C men and then conduct our own meeting at 7:30 in the Spiritual Center. All wives are invited to attend. Our next big potluck meeting will be November 9th. At that time we will have a baby shower for the A Hope Center, so please bring baby items, diapers, wipes, etc. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like information about the Ladies Auxiliary. Cheryl Bloom =============================================================================================== Coffee A little boy surprised his grandmother one morning and brought her a cup of coffee. He made it himself so he was proud. He waits to hear the verdict on quality of the coffee. She had never in her life had such a bad cup of coffee and forced down the last sip. She sees 3 little green army guys in the bottom of the cup. She asked, Honey, why are there 3 little green army guys in the bottom of my cup? Grandson says, You know grandma, like on TV, The best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup. =========================================== New Supreme Secretary Appointed Charles E. Since our founding in 1882, the primary mission of the Knights of Columbus has been to protect families from the financial ruin caused by the death of the breadwinner. From that humble start, the Order has grown to include top-rated life insurance, long-term care insurance and retirement products. With more than $80 billion of insurance in force and a full-time field force of more than 1,400 serving our members and their families, we are proudly fulfilling Fr. McGivney s vision. The best way to learn about our products is by arranging a visit with a local field agent. I can custom design an insurance program to meet your current needs, help you plan for the future or simply explain the many fraternal benefits that come with membership. 5 World Youth Day The Pope s Message to Youth Upon his arrival, Pope Benedict XVI greeted the cheering masses in various languages before giving an address in Spanish. To English-speaking pilgrims, he said, May these days of prayer, friendship and celebration bring us closer to each other and to the Lord Jesus. Let us pray for one another, so that we may be joyful witnesses to Christ, today and always. In his address, Pope Benedict observed that when a person s life is not rooted in faith in Christ, it is easy to get lost on other paths which leave emptiness and frustration in their wake. He encouraged his young listeners to seize the opportunity to know Christ better and to make sure that, rooted in him, your enthusiasm and happiness, your desire to go further, to reach the heights, even God himself. The Holy Father further described how a life characterized moral relativism contrasts with the Christian vocation. Indeed, there are many who, creating their own gods, believe they need no roots or foundations other than themselves, he said. They take it upon themselves to decide what is true or not, what is good and evil, what is just and unjust; who should live and who can be sacrificed in the interests of other preferences; leaving each step to chance, with no clear path, letting themselves be led by the whim of each moment. In this light, Pope Benedict encouraged the youth to build their lives upon the firm foundation which is Christ. He said that the freedom found in Christ is the reason for our joy and the firm ground upon which to build the civilization of love and life, capable of humanizing all of us. Finally, foreshadowing the Way of Cross to take place through the streets of Madrid on Friday, the pope said, I commend the fruits of this World Youth Day to the most holy Virgin Mary, who said Yes to the will of God, and teaches us a unique example of fidelity to her divine son, whom she followed to his death upon the Cross. Making a Tough Decision The economics of putting family first can be scary. by William Gonzalez It was time to make another dreaded phone call telling my wife that problems had come up and I wouldn t be coming home the next day as scheduled. I was thousands of miles away, yet I could hear the disappointment in her voice as she tried to be understanding. She was used to this happening, but it didn t make it any easier for me. For four years I felt the strain that my frequent and sometimes unpredictable absences would render upon my family. I decided something had to change. I chose to take a position that meant a significant reduction in pay but would require far less travel and allow much more control over my schedule. Doing what was right for my family and what I believe was God s will brought serenity and relief. My father-in-law served as an admirable role model in this regard. A busy doctor with his own practice for years, he made the sacrifice of taking a much less desirable position as a prison physician. In doing so, he was able to work a more regular schedule and be present to his eight children. Naturally, the work environment presented its share of sufferings, but he was home every day when his kids were coming in the door from school. Steve Woods, in his book, Christian Fatherhood, remarked, For our children, love is a four letter word spelled T-I-M-E. This resonated deeply with my wife, who still talks about her father s heroism with heartfelt gratitude. While changing jobs is not a necessity or even an option for most, all of us should take time to evaluate the importance we place on our work and family. As we consider the task of balancing work and family, the word balance seems to infer a kind of equality. However, as husbands and fathers, our wives and children need to be a higher priority. No matter how much you pour into your job, in the final analysis, the day will come when you are no longer fulfilling that position; someone else will fill your shoes, perhaps even doing it better. On the other hand, no one can step into your role as father. Pope John Paul II observed that the place and task of the father in and for the family is of unique and irreplaceable importance At the same time, work and family should not be looked upon as opposing forces. Both duties are part of our vocation as fathers and a means of our sanctification. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, By enduring the hardship of work in union with Jesus, the carpenter of Nazareth and the one crucified on Calvary, man collaborates in a certain fashion with the Son of God in his redemptive work In the daily struggle to do well in our careers and attend to the needs of our families, we can follow some helpful tips: 1. Put God first. 2. Be organized and use time efficiently at work. When at work, work! Stay focused on your task and don t waste time with other distractions. 3. Live within your means. Meeting the needs of both work and family is a continual challenge, but with God s grace and a willingness to follow his will, it doesn t have to be a tightrope act. Volume 13 Issue 9 Page 5
