2 The Week Ahead Gathering Together To Praise God MOMENT FOR REFLECTION This Sunday we begin our summer theme, A People Like Us, in which we ll explore the stories of some familiar, and not so familiar, faces in our Bible. Today s name, Noah, is certainly a familiar one. One of the ubiquitous characters of our Bible, Noah appears everywhere from Sunday School (or CCD, for some of us), to major mo on pictures. While his story is familiar, and even a bit fanciful, the heart of the story is about rela onship. When we are able to focus in on God s rela onship with Noah and his family, we are able to glimpse something important about our own story and rela onship with God. The design was inspired by the grate work in the right front of the church covering the organ pipes and the stained glass in the chancel. Individual pieces of fabric were cut and fused to a black background giving it a stained glass effect. 3 Summer Worship 2014 at Hancock A People Like Us: Stories from our Bible Each week this summer we'll hear the Biblical stories of some familiar and (hopefully) not sofamiliar faces. We'll hear sermons from Alex, Becca, Nancy, Paul (at the end of the summer), and two guest worship leaders: Adam Hearlson, professor of preaching and director of the Wilson Chapel at Andover Newton, and June Cooper, execu ve director of City Mission Society. As the summer unfolds, we'll be sure to keep you updated on sermon topics and themes, and any associated programming. The contractor has been working on many other areas of the church as well and some of these (like the CE Wing) are almost complete. Problems in the kitchen related to a subcontractor are being resolved; work there will resume soon and the equipment is ready to install as soon as that is finished. Work on the Narthex wall and the realigning of the doors with the aisles begins this week so access to the Sanctuary will only be from the back parking lot or from the Handicap entrance on the in driveway. As we ve been told a number of mes, and as many of you know from your own home construc on projects, it is not if there will be delays in a construc on project, but when the delays will be iden fied. We have found ours! Due to an unforeseen problem with a pier from the 1960 addi on as well as some other minor setbacks, our project will take longer to complete than we had hoped. This means that, come September, construc on will s ll be happening at Hancock. Disappoin ng, surely, but we are commi ed to finishing the project correctly and doing it well so that our modifica ons can stand up to the test of me. We will have a be er sense of the project me frame once this pier has been repaired and the elevator installa on begins. Be assured that we will keep you up to date as we gain informa on. Whether you're caring for an aging parent or concerned about the care of your own estate, this is a wonderful opportunity to have some of your ques ons answered and meet others in the congrega on who might be in a similar situa on. Bill will join us on Wednesday, June 25th at 7:00 PM in the Dining Room. Becca Lockwood's Ecclesiastical Council On Sunday, June 22 at 2:30 PM, one of our Student Minister's, Becca Lockwood, will jump her final hurdle before seeking a call in the United Church of Christ. At this gathering of local churches, Becca will be presented for ques oning and conversa on regarding her theology and call to ordained ministry. All are welcome to a end! As Becca is a resident of Maine, her "EC" will be at Casco Village Church, 941 Meadow Rd. Casco, Maine It is approximately 2:30 hours from Lexington. Summer Pastor's Class Back by popular demand, the weekly "Pastor's Class" will return for our summer theme. Working in tandem with Alex, Craig Zaehring has stepped up to lead the group in though ul conversa on. The class will resume on Sunday, June 29th at 9:00 AM in Pearson. This group will con nue throughout the summer based on interest from the congrega on, so be sure to join us each week for a discussion of that morning's scripture and Biblical character. On the 29th we'll begin our me together exploring the story of Samuel's mother, Hannah. Thank you Becca for faithfully serving this congrega on for two years! While she will be around part me this summer, her final sermon at Hancock will be on July 13, Hancock Grills We re s ll looking for Hosts for the Hancock Grills. 5 Help Lead Summer Worship We need Liturgists! Have you ever thought about reading scripture during worship, or wri ng a prayer? The summer at Hancock is a wonderful opportunity to try something new. If you'll be around this summer, and you'd be interested in helping lead worship on Sundays, please let me know. Even if you've never done it before, I'm willing to sit down with you and help you learn a bit more about worship leading. No divinity degree or robe required! If you sing or play an instrument, consider sharing your talents with the congrega on in helping lead worship this summer! We are looking for solos, duets, trios, etc. in a variety of genres for preludes, postludes, offertories, etc. for July and August. We would especially encourage middle, high school, and returning college students! The Stewardship Team would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to the Hancock community for the tremendous results we achieved together during the Delight in Giving stewardship campaign this year! You can find a full summary of this year s results on the HUCC website; there s a link to the story in the weekly as well. Highlights include: The prayer flags we made in October reflected the me and talents Hancock members and friends pledge every year to create our community of faith. We tallied how many mes each of the words was selected across all 139 responses, revealing the three words that represent giving joyfully for this group of respondents: Listen, Learn and Pray. You will see these words again in upcoming stewardship communica ons this fall! Hancock received 201 pledges of financial support, or 82% of the 243 pledges made last year. This is a good turnout AND we can do be er! Our goal is 100% par cipa on in Stewardship, no ma er the size of the pledge made. Every gi counts. Hancock members pledged a record $729,479 to sustain and grow our mission. We topped last year s total and raised enough money to fund our ac vi es. Thank you! The Stewardship Team offers the following reflec ons as we look ahead to the next campaign: We learned that our Delight in Giving theme helped us focus on what we are trying to do as a community did it help you? We learned the many ways people give of themselves in addi on to monetary contribu ons. We intend to honor and celebrate these gi s throughout the upcoming seasons. We need to learn why our par cipa on was lower this year compared to past years. While we surpassed the total dollars from last year, a trend of fewer people giving more money is not healthy for us on a prac cal OR on a spiritual level. We confirmed our belief that stewardship is a faith prac ce of personal growth and gra tude. We confirmed that talking about giving is a year round effort and we need to start the conversa on about the 2015 stewardship campaign much earlier than October.
