1 Hancock Covenant of Welcome We welcome all who seek to know God. Transfiguration We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ. We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences. We recognize and love each individual as a child of God. We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental ability to join us on our journey of faith. This faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed, for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity. As Paul wrote to the Galatians, In Christ there is no longer Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one. 2 Service of Worship Gathering Together To Praise God MOMENT FOR REFLECTION This is the final Sunday of our Epiphany season. The season of Lent begins in four days, on Ash Wednesday. Epiphany means manifesta on and the season has been filled with stories about Jesus making manifest to the world his iden ty as the long awaited Savior. Customarily, the gospel reading for this Sunday is the Transfigura on, a vision of Jesus seen by his closest disciples. He brought them to a mountaintop where they had the experience, before returning to the valley below. We hear this story once more, giving thanks for this revela on. And we remember that God is present on mountaintops, surely, but also in the deepest of valleys. PRELUDE Grazioso Telemann Marche Royale Lully CALL TO WORSHIP ONE: One day Jesus took his disciples to the top of a mountain, where they had a vision of him transfigured before them: flash and dazzle, bright light and revela on. MANY: They saw and they believed the revela on, they wanted to stay in the light, to live there forever. ONE: But Jesus brought them back down the mountain, to live once more in ordinary me and space. MANY: Yet they remembered what they had seen, and it made their faith strong. Let us remember this day, too. Let our faith be strengthened by the revela on of God to us. Come, Holy Spirit, let our worship be extraordinary today! *OPENING HYMN O Wondrous Sight, O Vision Fair (see page 6) PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST WORDS OF WELCOME PRAYER OF INVOCATION GATHERING SONG Jesus the Light of the World (see page 7) CHILDREN S TIME Pam Cochrane A er the gathering, all children and youth are invited to chapel me and program ac vi es in the educa on wing. 4 Service of Worship PRAYERS FOR OUR HANCOCK COMMUNITY Alex Shea Will A TIME OF SILENT PRAYER PRAYERS FOR THE WORLD Pam Cochrane Ash Wednesday As United Church of Christ congrega ons across the country highlight ways to care for the earth this month, we li in prayer today brothers and sisters assis ng others in the a ermath of relentless winter weather. From the na onal guard with dump trucks and front loaders to state crews, town plows and independent haulers to our neighbors wielding only a shovel, we give thanks for all who work together to relieve the stress of these severe storms on our hearts and homes, our streets, highways and public transit. May we con nue to seek ways to understand natures signs and pa erns that impact our lives and fragile world. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into tempta on, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. The Good News Is Proclaimed THE GOSPEL READING Mark 9:2-9 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him! Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, un l a er the Son of Man had risen from the dead. THE SERMON Bookends Paul Shupe *CLOSING HYMN All Beautiful the March of Days #456 Please feel free to substitute all for men in verse 2 Wednesday, Feb 18, 7pm in CE Commons For more than a thousand years, Christians have been setting aside forty days before Easter (not including Sundays) and calling it the season of Lent. It is viewed as a time for reflection on our faith, and for repentance and change from the habits and practices that separate us from God and from others. Embark with us on the journey of remembrance, as we revisit and retell the stories of Jesus' life and teachings. Pam Cochrane leads this service. 4 ANNOUNCEMENTS 13

7 A Lenten Mini Retreat with Nancy Rottman Service of Worship GETTING REAL WITH GOD Reclaiming the Christian Spiritual Practice We o en hear the paraphrase of Philippians 4:6 Take everything to God in prayer. But how o en do we truly take everything, every sorrow and woe, every complaint and protest to God? Lament is the biblical language of sorrow, protest, and contri on. It is a means of telling the truth, speaking with and to God about how life truly is. Lament is available to us individually and communally as a way to embrace the paradox of connec on between our deepest sorrow and our deepest joy. Lament and praise within the biblical tradi on are inextricably linked, the two sides of the same coin. When: Friday, March 13th, 7:00 9:00pm Saturday, March 14th, 8:00am 2:00pm Where: Pearson Room, Hancock Church Friday evening desserts, Saturday morning coffee, and lunch provided. Join Student Minister Nancy Ro man for a miniretreat during Lent to learn more about the power of lament to deepen our rela onship with God and one another. During our me together we ll explore the history of lament within Chris an spiritual prac ce, imagine the power of lament in addressing injus ce and oppression in the world today, and prac ce wri ng, singing, and speaking lament individually and communally. All are welcome and can be assured of a safe, accep ng, and risk free environment in which to share as li le or as much of yourself as you are comfortable with. For ques ons or more informa on please contact Nancy in person or by at nancy.ro man@hancockchurch.org Sign up on Sundays in February during coffee hour or by calling the Church office at ANNOUNCEMENTS 7
