1 Hancock Covenant of Welcome We welcome all who seek to know God. We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ. We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences. We recognize and love each individual as a child of God. We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental ability to join us on our journey of faith. This faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed, for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity. As Paul wrote to the Galatians, In Christ there is no longer Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one. 2 Service of Worship Gathering Together To Praise God MOMENT FOR REFLECTION Have you seen the signs? Have you heard the s ll small voice calling to you? For many of us the signs and voice of God on most days, in most years is illussive, and can seemingly appear out of sight or ear. But, perhaps in this season of Epiphany as we retell the story of Jesus calling to Phillip, imagine that just being who you are, where you are in your life s journey is enough. Imagine that the call to discipleship is as simple as turning to the one who sits next to you and saying, I see you, I hear you, and know you by name. PRELUDE Jesu, meine Freude J.S. Bach CALL TO WORSHIP One: Gentle people, come and see! Jesus is calling Phillip, Nathaniel, and you. Many: We come to the house of God seekers and sojourners called to be God s people. One: Gentle people, Jesus calls to us, follow me. Will we follow? Many: We will follow for God has promised that we will see great things/ One: Great things indeed, for you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. Many: Come, O God, so that we can hear you calling our names. Here and now. *OPENING HYMN Ye Servants of God #206 PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST It is perfectly fine to choose not to shake hands in an effort to quell germs. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit! Nathanael asked him, Where did you get to know me? Jesus answered, I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you. Nathanael replied, Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.
