2 MOMENT FOR REFLECTION GATHERING TOGETHER TO PRAISE GOD This morning we have a special guest preacher, the Rev. Dr. Sarah Drummond is the Dean of Students at Andover Newton Theological Seminary, and she will bring to us the good news from the Psalms and an epistle. Sarah will also hold a Q&A following worship in the sanctuary. For many years Hancock and ANTS have had a strong partnership in training wonderful future ministers for the church at large. We are grateful for our strong ties and good work over time. We hope you enjoy worship this morning! PRELUDE Remembrance Cathy Moklebust Hancock Carillon HANCOCK PRAYS If you have come this morning with a joy or concern that you would like to have included in the morning prayers, please fill out a Hancock Prays card that you will find on the back of the pew in front of you. Read it carefully, remembering that our worship services are televised and live-streamed over the internet. Pass the card to the center aisle nearest you during the singing of the Opening Hymn. The Ushers will collect the cards and bring them to the ministers. CALL TO WORSHIP Service of Worship One: God, you have been our dwelling place for all generations. 4 Service of Worship THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE CALL TO PRAYER God of our Life, Through All the Circling Years #83 PASTORAL PRAYER Rev. Paul Shupe A TIME OF SILENT PRAYER THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. THE GOOD NEWS IS PROCLAIMED THE SCRIPTURE READING Psalm 90:1-8, (9-11), 12 Emelia Attridge A Prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our dwelling-place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You turn us back to dust, and say, Turn back, you mortals. For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night. You sweep them away; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning; in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. For we are consumed by your anger; by your wrath we are overwhelmed. You have set our iniquities before you, 4

5 our secret sins in the light of your countenance. For all our days pass away under your wrath; our years come to an end like a sigh. The days of our life are seventy years, or perhaps eighty, if we are strong; even then their span is only toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. Who considers the power of your anger? Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due to you. So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. THE SCRIPTURE READING 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 Rev. Barbara Callaghan Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, There is peace and security, then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then, let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. THE SERMON "Children of the Light" Rev. Dr. Sarah Drummond CLOSING HYMN Now Thank We All Our God #27 BENEDICTION *PASSING THE PEACE Service of Worship POSTLUDE Finale on Kremser and Nun danket Charles Callahan David Owens, organist *Congregation standing some may wish to remain seated 5

10 Announcements Sound System Upgrades Underway! You may have noticed the two tall speakers on each side of the chancel this Sunday. They are part of a process of upgrading our 40 year old speaker system in the sanctuary. We are thrilled to announce that the Bose Corporation has chosen us to be a test site for a new speaker technology. This new system will give us far greater clarity to the microphone sound in the room, with beams of sound aimed at the seating in the lower level as well as a separate beam to the balcony. Bose is donating the equipment and its installation. The speakers we see are test models that will be replaced early in 2018 with the final versions. The final models will be painted the color of the wall, and the old main speaker that hangs above the chancel will be removed. The new system will not be active for another few weeks, so please be patient while we finish off the work! This is the final piece of the system to be upgraded (the remainder of the audio and TV systems we replaced in the Growing for Good campaign.) We thank Bill Becker and the folks at Bose for their generosity in donating this new system, and we greatly look forward to using it in a few weeks time! Adult Christian Education Book Group The Rev. Barbara Callaghan will lead our next meeting on Monday morning, November 20 at 10:00 a.m. in the Pearson Room. We'll be starting a new book by Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis: Always With Us?: What Jesus Really Said About the Poor. We decided to read and discuss this book because it will be the next "allchurch-read" in preparation for Rev. Dr. Theoharis's visit to Hancock as a special guest preacher on Sunday, January 21. We plan to order several copies for the congregation. Copies are $21.50 each and are available by cash or check. Nevertheless, some readers may wish to purchase their own copy at their local bookstore. 10

16 Hancock Covenant of Welcome We welcome all who seek to know God. We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ. We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental ability to join us on our journey of faith. The faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed, for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity.
