1 CELEBRATION of WORSHIP January 22, 2012 * = Please stand, as you are able GATHERING AROUND THE GOOD NEWS Prelude Canon in D Pachelbel Welcome to Worship! *Call to Worship adapted from a poem by Philip Andrews You are invited to respond with the words in bold. Minister There is dignity here Ministers let us exalt it. Minister There is courage here Ministers let us support it. Minister There is humanity here Ministers let us enjoy it. Minister There is a universe in every child Ministers let us share in it. Minister There is a voice calling through the chaos of our times; Ministers there is a spirit moving across the waters of our world. Minister there is movement, a light, a promise of hope. Ministers Let them that have ears to hear, hear! Minister Minister 1 But look not for Armageddon, nor listen for a trumpet. Behold, we bring tidings of great joy: The Incarnation!

2 *Hymn of Praise When Morning Gilds the Skies 487 Originally 14 stanzas and titled "A Christian Greeting", the hymn's German author is unknown. The translator Caswall followed John Henry Newman from the Anglican into the Catholic priesthood. The composer Barnby conducted the Royal Choral Society. Call to Confession and Healing Prayer of Confession and Healing Be Still and Know That I Am God Silent Reflection *Hymn of Grace There s a Wideness in God s Mercy verse one 298 Born to Calvinist parents in England, Faber became an Anglican priest and later a Catholic priest. He wrote 150 hymns, all after his conversion to Roman Catholicism. *Passing of the Peace of Christ Minister The peace of the Lord be with you! Ministers And also with you! The Peace of Christ is passed openly among one another. We return to our seats with the following Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see. Welcoming of Guests and Community News HEARING THE GOOD NEWS Witness in Song The Lord Is My Light Patti Drennan Children s Witness At the conclusion of the storytelling, children 4 years or less may be taken to the nursery. Do know we enjoy having children of all ages worship with us even with a little noise! 2

3 Children s Blessing In Unison The bright light of God s guarding be with you. The bright light of Christ s love be with you. The bright light of the Spirit s presence surround and enfold you, all the days and the nights of your life. Amen. Witness in Word Jonah 3:1-5, 10 Mark 1:14-20 Silent Reflection Our Offerings to God When We Would Say How? God Says Yes! RESPONDING TO THE GOOD NEWS Offertory Sometimes a Light Surprises Craig Courtney (Denise Young Solo) *Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures here below. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit. Alleluia! Alleluia! Allelu-ia! *Stewardship Prayer (in unison) based on Deuteronomy 26 3 Gracious God, you hear our prayers. You have brought us to this place flowing with milk and honey. Rejoicing in your love and care, we bring to you now the first fruits of our labors. What more have we to offer to you but ourselves? Prayers of the People Offerings of Joys and Concerns Pastoral Prayer

4 The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom: Come! Thy will: Be done! On earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. BEARING AND FOLLOWING THE GOOD NEWS INTO THE WORLD *Hymn of Dedication Tu Has Venido a la Orilla 377 (Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore) Monsignor Gabarain, Spanish chaplain to Pope Paul VI, wrote this after being moved by the experience of being by the Galilean seaside where some of the disciples were called.
