1 Children s Sunday Hancock United Church of Christ, Congregational 1912 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA May 22, 2016 Morning Worship 10:00 am Evening 6:15 p.m.

2 MOMENT FOR REFLECTION Service of Worship Gathering Together To Praise God Welcome to Children s Sunday! If this is your first me with us, worship this morning might seem a li le odd, but we promise it will be fun! The mission of Hancock s Chris an Educa on Program is to create a place for God to show up and show off, and that s what we re doing this morning. So pay a en on! God wants to be found, so be on the lookout! What does it look like when God shows up in your life? What does it feel and sound like? And once there, what does it look like when God starts to show off? This morning as we sing, read, pray, and bap ze, we hope you can relax and be moved to become like a child: curious, present, wild, free, and open to the Spirit of God moving among and through us. There won't be any homework or test a er the benedic on, so let's dig in and play! PRELUDE Partita in G Major, BWV 829: Allemande J. S. 4 Service of Worship LEADER: Brothers and Sisters in Christ, we gather now to celebrate the gi of grace in the sacrament of bap sm. PEOPLE: There is one body and one Spirit. There is one hope in God s call to us. There is one Lord, one faith, one bap sm, one God, Creator of us all. LEADER: Bap sm is the sacrament through which we are united with Jesus Christ, and given part in Christ s ministry of reconcilia on. In bap sm God works in us the power of forgiveness and the renewal of the Spirit, and the knowledge of the call to be Christ s disciples always. PEOPLE: This is the water of bap sm. Out of this water we rise with new life, forgiven of sin and one in Christ, members of Christ s body. SCRIPTURE READING Mark 10:13-16 (responsively) LEADER: They were bringing children to Jesus that he might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them: PEOPLE: Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the realm of God. Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the realm of God like a child shall not enter it. 4 LEADER: And Jesus took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them. INVITATION TO THE FAMILIES PRESENTATION OF WATER FOR BAPTISM QUESTIONS AND AFFIRMATIONS LEADER: Parents, do you desire to live and grow with Eliza in the covenant community of Jesus Christ? PARENTS: We do. LEADER: Will you strive to learn from the wisdom of the prophets; doing jus ce, loving mercy, and walking humbly with your God, helping Eliza to do the same? PARENTS AND GODPARENTS: We will, with the help of God. LEADER: Will you seek an apprecia on for the life and teachings of Jesus, in concert with an apprecia on for diverse religious tradi ons, helping Eliza to do the same? PARENTS AND GODPARENTS: We will, with the help of God.

5 Service of Worship LEADER: Will you honor the faith ques ons that arise throughout life, and will you help Eliza do the same? PARENTS AND GODPARENTS: We will, with the help of God. LEADER: Will you remember and help Eliza to learn that faith is a journey and that God s love is available to you each day? PARENTS AND GODPARENTS: We will, with the help of God. CONGREGATIONAL ASSENT (responsively) LEADER: Jesus calls us to make disciples of others, and to offer them the gi of grace in bap sm. On behalf of the Chris an church in every place, do you who witness and celebrate this sacrament promise your love, support and care to Hudson and Wesley as they live and grow in Christ? PEOPLE: We promise our love, support and care. PRAYER OF BAPTISM BAPTISM OF ELIZA LEA CALLAGHAN PRAYER FOR THE BAPTIZED The Good News Proclaimed THE GOSPEL READING Matthew 13:3-9 Read by members of the JYO He said many things to them in parables: A farmer went out to sca er seed. As he was sca ering seed, some fell on the path, and birds came and ate it. Other seed fell on rocky ground where the soil was shallow. They sprouted immediately because the soil wasn t deep. But when the sun came up, it scorched the plants, and they dried up because they had no roots. Other seed fell among thorny plants. The thorny plants grew and choked them. Other seed fell on good soil and bore fruit, in one case a yield of one hundred to one, in another case a yield of sixty to one, and in another case a yield of thirty to one. Everyone who has ears should pay a en on. MESSAGE FOR ALL Dirt David C. Clark 5

16 Hancock Covenant of Welcome We welcome all who seek to know God. We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ. We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences. We recognize and love each individual as a child of God. We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental ability to join us on our journey of faith. This faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed, for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity. As Paul wrote to the Galatians, In Christ there is no longer Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one.
