1 Hancock Covenant of Welcome We welcome all who seek to know God. We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ. We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences. We recognize and love each individual as a child of God. We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental ability to join us on our journey of faith. This faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed, for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity. As Paul wrote to the Galatians, In Christ there is no longer Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one. 2 Gathering Together To Praise God MOMENT FOR REFLECTION On this day, we gather to rededicate the Memorial Garden and Remembrance Hall. Located in the core of our building, now in full view from our first floor front entry, the Garden and Hall serve as a sacred space and memorial to those who have entered God s eternal Kingdom that has no end. Just as Jesus o en re red to the shade of a garden to pray and call upon God s presence in his life, we reclaim this space as our memorial garden and place of remembrance. We li up today all those who came before us, those whose names we add today, and all who represent the Saints of Hancock as a living tes mony to our Easter faith. 4 PRAYERS FOR THE WORLD Andrew Harris THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into tempta on, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. The Good News Is Proclaimed THE SCRIPTURE READING John 3:1-17 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God. Jesus answered him, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the Kingdom of God without being born from above. Nicodemus said to him, How can anyone be born a er having grown old? Can one enter a second me into the mother s womb and be born? Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, You must be born from above. The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where is comes from or where is goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be? Jesus answered him, Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and tes fy to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our tes mony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses li ed up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be li ed up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 5 Financial Update 2015 Budget 2015 Budget Budgeted Annual Income $906,222 Budgeted Annual Expenses $955,912 Net Deficit ($ 49,690) The 2015 budget has a projected $49,690 deficit. It is s ll early in the fiscal year, and there is s ll too much uncertainty in some parts of our budget (such as personnel) to change our outlook on the projected deficit. Income to date has been favorable, but higher expenses have offset some of that and we are about to enter the part of the year when revenue drops off significantly. BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Festival Prelude on HYFRYDOL by A. Fedak Hancock's Ministry of Remembrance Memorial Garden and Remembrance Hall Committee: Rosemarie Sauermann, Bill Erickson, Kay Barney, Linda Williams, Charlotte Dougherty, Tom Ransohoff, and Verne Henderson (posthumously). To avoid ending the year in deficit per our budget, we need to collect 5.5% more income and stay on plan for expenses. Using the seasonal trends on how income generally is received, we can calculate a "glide path" which would result in minimal to no deficit. Thru April we needed income of $332,002. Thanks to those members who have paid their pledges early and to those who have contributed more than pledged. We collected $380,786. Currently we are ahead by $48,784 and this puts us into a favorable posi on as we head into the summer when dona ons tend to fall off. In May the goal is to collect $55,419 in revenue to stay on the glide path of matching annual budgeted expenses. Expenses thru April are running approximately $19K higher than budgeted. Some of this is a ma er of ming of bills, but a significant por on is due to a variety of unplanned events, such as severe weather (high gas and snowplowing expenses), replacement of decaying windows on the South Wall and urgent organ repairs. Some of these costs (windows and organ repair) will be subsidized by reserve funds. Hancock does not receive any denomina onal financial support. Financial contribu ons from members and friends are essen al for the con nuing opera on of the church. Thank you. June 14, Kick Off our Annual Hancock Grills at 5pm at Hancock! Every Summer, Hancock members and friends take me each week to gather for food and fellowship. While it isn't quite summer yet, we're ge ng a bit of a head start! Join us on Sunday June 14 at 5:00 PM in the Hancock Parking Lot for a taste of Hancock Grills. We'll have a tent and some sea ng provided. Bring something to throw on the grill and we'll get it cooked! A er the grilling is done, everyone is invited to stay for the last Evening Well at 6:15 PM. For any ques ons, reach out to Alex@HancockCHurch.org. Today s Flower Offering The flowers for the chancel are given in loving memory of our parents by Carolyn and Bill Aitken. 12 ANNOUNCEMENTS 5
