1 Hancock Covenant of Welcome We welcome all who seek to know God. We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ. We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences. We recognize and love each individual as a child of God. We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental ability to join us on our journey of faith. This faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed, for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity. As Paul wrote to the Galatians, In Christ there is no longer Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one. 2 Gathering Together To Praise God MOMENT FOR REFLECTION This morning we conclude our explora on of the events of the Exodus. We have seen, and heard the cries of, the people in slavery in Egypt under Pharaoh. We have explored the call of God to Moses to bring the people out into freedom. And this morning we see the establishment of a new covenant between the people and God, made in the land that God had promised. This new covenant we now understand to have been more complex than perhaps the people did in those days, and we explore how we can respond to what we perceive to be God s call to us without excluding or indeed harming others. Responding to God s call requires of us both faithfulness and humility. PRELUDE Concerto in a minor Alessandro Scarlatti A Joyful Noyse Allegro, Largo, Fuga, Largo, Allegro CALL TO WORSHIP ONE: When God moved and set the people free; MANY: a new covenant was established, a new rela onship of faithfulness between God and human beings. ONE: The word of God was put within us, in our hearts and minds. MANY: We are thankful that God is with us s ll, and meets us in worship, in learning, in service to others. ALL: Let us gather to listen for the call of God unto us. Praise be to God! *OPENING HYMN Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah #102 PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST WORDS OF WELCOME PRAYER OF INVOCATION Nancy Rottman GATHERING SONG Walk With Me Walk with me, I will walk with you And build the land that God has planned Where love shines through (repeat) 2 * Congregation standing some may wish to remain seated The Week Ahead Sunday October 11th All Day Closet Pain ng Project in DR 8:30 am Pastor s Class in PEAR 9:00 am Stewardship Commi ee in RM :00 am Morning Worship A Joyful Noyse in SANC 10:20 am Children s Program in CE Wing 10:20 am JYO in UR 11:00 am Fellowship Hour in DR 6:15 pm Well in CLAR 7:00 pm No OWL tonight Monday October 12th All Day Closet Pain ng Project in DR All Day Offices Closed 1:30 pm Skyloom in KS 7:00 pm Boy Scouts Adult Commi ee Mee ng in CE Commons 7:30 pm Endowment Commi ee in RM 205 7:30 pm Pruden al Commi ee in CONF Tuesday October 13th 10:00 am Staff Mee ng in CONF 11:00 am Staff Worship Planning in CONF 1:30 pm Library Commi ee Mee ng in PEAR 7:00 pm Chris an Service Commi ee in PEAR 7:00 pm Adult Chris an Educa on Commi ee in LIB 7:30 pm Finance Commi ee Wednesday October 14th 9:00 am Submission Deadline for Hancock Weekly 1:15 pm Consort in KS 7:00 pm Carillon Rehearsal in BELL Thursday October 15th 11:30 am Memorial Garden Commi ee in CONF 6:30 pm Girl Scouts/ Susan con Heuene in RM 208 6:30 pm Boy Scouts in CLAR, KS, RM 205 7:30 pm Chancel Choir Rehearsal in CHOR, SANC Friday October 16th 9:30 am Morning Glory Bell Ringers Saturday October 17th Pruden al Work Day in CLAR, CONF, SANC, and DR 10:00 am AA Mee ng in DR 12:00 pm Parish Life Work Day in DR, Kitchen 3:00 pm Plaster Posaunes Brass Group in CHOR Sunday October 18th 8:30 am Pastor s Class in PEAR 8:30 am Choir Rehearsal in SANC 9:00 am Mar ng to Glory Ringers 9:00 am Stewardship Commi ee in RM :00 am Morning Worship Celebrate Student Ministries, NIN, Bap sm, City Mission in SANC 10:20 am Children s Program in CE Wing 10:20 am JYO in UR 11:00 am Fellowship Hour in CLAR 11:15 am City Mission Society Open Discussion with June Cooper and Sandra Barnes 11:15 am Hancock Choristers in RM 212 3:00 pm Bernstein Concert Concert Series in SANC 6:15 pm Well in CLAR 7:00 pm Caregiver s Dinner in PEAR 7:00 pm HYG in UR 7:00 pm OWL in KS LOCATION KEY BELL Bell Room CHAP Chapel CHOR Choir Room CLAR Clark Hall CONF Conference Room DR Dining Room RM205 Room 205 KS Kathie Stuart LIB Po er Library PEAR Pearson SANC Sanctuary WILS Wilson UR Upper Room To schedule an event or rent space, contact the Church Office at office@hancockchurch.org or call The complete Hancock calendar is available at calendar. 11

Now, in gra tude, we seek to discover how each of us might join together, sharing our blessings with a world in need. Help us to hear not only the cries of those who are in need, but also your guiding voice, so that we may hear and reach out in faithfulness, sharing the Good News that has changed our lives with others who are in need of it. Bless our leaders, bless each of us, that our faith may deepen even as we seek to discern, so that when we hear your call, we will be ready to step out in faith and in joy. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen. 3
4 4 PRAYERS FOR OUR HANCOCK COMMUNITY A TIME OF SILENT PRAYER Andrew Harris PRAYERS FOR THE WORLD David C. Clark THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into tempta on, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. ANTHEM Herr, wenn ich nur dich hab Dietrich Buxtehude A Joyful Noyse Lord, have I but Thee: then I desire nothing in heaven and earth. Though my flesh and my heart faileth; yet art thou God forever, the comfort of my heart and my salva on. Alleluja. The Good News Is Proclaimed THE HEBREW BIBLE READING Deuteronomy 30:11-20 David C. Clark Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away. It is not in heaven, that you should say, Who will go up to heaven for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it? Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it? No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe. See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity.if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
