1 Palm Sunday, Jan Richardson PALM & PASSION SUNDAY April 9, 2017, 10:00 a.m. Hancock United Church of Christ, Congregational 1912 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA
2 MOMENT FOR REFLECTION GATHERING TOGETHER TO PRAISE GOD For centuries, the Sunday before Easter has been designated Palm Sunday, recalling the day when Jesus entered Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover with his disciples, who escorted him into the city with shouts proclaiming that the long awaited Messiah had arrived. In more recent years, some churches have added to the celebration of the palms a remembrance of the events that followed: his last supper, his betrayal by Judas, his arrest and trial, the denial of Peter, his sentence of death. Doing so brings the full story of Holy Week to our attention, enriching our faith, and deepening our longing for the great and joyous good news of Easter morning. Today we join in the procession with palms, and linger to listen as the world, including his own disciples, reject him and turn from him in anxiety and fear. Come! Add your voice to the celebration, and then dare to face the darkness with him. PRELUDE Musette and Allegro from Concerto Grosso in G Minor Handel Cantata Orchestra WORDS OF WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP PROCESSION OF THE PALMS Confirmands ONE: When the time had come to celebrate the Passover, Jesus went with his disciples to the great city of Jerusalem, and there he entered the gates to their acclaim. MANY: Hosanna! they shouted. Hosanna! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord! ONE: And then he taught them what the Messiah must do... MANY: And one by one, they turned away. ONE: Come, let us enter into the great love story of Jesus living and dying, for the sake of the whole world. MANY: Come, let us worship! CHILDREN S MESSAGE David C. Clark Childcare is always available for nursery and toddler age children in the CE Wing. Pre-k through 7 th graders will meet in the CE Commons before breaking into classes. 8 th & 9 th graders will remain in worship. 3 THE PASSION OF JESUS The Misunderstood Savior THE STORY IS TOLD events from the Procession through the Last Supper E. Attridge MUSIC Behold the Lamb of God Behold the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world. The Savior Left Alone PRAYER OF CONFESSION adapted from Spacious Faith Barbara Callaghan God of the foolish cross, tottering down the streets of Jerusalem on a donkey, You are not the savior we expect. Your power doesn t look like the power we want our God to demonstrate. Your wisdom makes no sense to us. We are happy to join the crowd, waving branches, But not so sure we want to follow you into the temple courts into the upper room into the Garden of Gethsemane to the foot of the cross. Forgive our false assumptions. Clarify our clouded vision. Forgive us for the ways we allow ourselves to be motivated by fear, by displays of power that are shallow and false, rather than trusting and believing in the real power of God; that of love, service, relationship, and community. Give us your courage, and the security in your love, and our belovedness that only you can give. Hosanna, hosanna. Save us, we beseech you! A REFLECTION ON HUMAN YEARNING A TIME OF SILENT PRAYER THE LORD S PRAYER Emelia Attridge Barbara Callaghan THE STORY IS TOLD events from the Last Supper through Gethsemane P. He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. 4 5

The Duport brothers, Bernhard Romberg, and Anton Kraft were leading cellists, composers and pedagogues of their time. Their artistry and collaboration inspired Beethoven to reconsider the cello s capabilities and to write major works for this instrument. This concert will explore the ingenuity of Beethoven s Sonatas for Piano and Cello from each of his three periods that still leaves us marveled almost two centuries later paired with selected works by Duport, Romberg and Kraft. It will feature cellist Cherry Kim, cellist Scott Thomas Lesser and pianist Ai-ying Chiu. Suggested donation of $15. Spring Senior Picnic The Congregational Care Committee and the Board of Deacons are excited to announce that we will host a Spring Senior Picnic on Saturday, April 22.
