1 Hancock Covenant of Welcome We welcome all who seek to know God. We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ. We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences. We recognize and love each individual as a child of God. We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental ability to join us on our journey of faith. This faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed, for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity. As Paul wrote to the Galatians, In Christ there is no longer Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one. 2 Gathering Together To Praise God MOMENT FOR REFLECTION Today marks the beginning of UCC Women s Week. This coincides with other denomina onal and secular observances of Women's Week including Interna onal Women's Day on March 8. Throughout the Bible and throughout me, women have rarely been portrayed in the fullness of their lived experience in the world and in faith. Many of women s deepest concerns, fears, weaknesses, and needs are not addressed in the biblical tradi on, and indeed their unique perspec ves, strengths, and gi s are rarely brought to bear in biblical teaching. This morning we will take a fresh look at a familiar story, The Return of the Prodigal Son, searching for Mother God s fresh wisdom for us as we consider women s experience of separa on and reconcilia on. PRELUDE Suite I in D: La Flamande E. Jacquet de la Guerre CALL TO WORSHIP One: Come, all you who have strayed, you have wandered far from Love s presence. Many: We come, hoping for uncondi onal welcome, for acceptance that heals us. One: Come, all of you who are hungry, and thirsty, and worn out. Many: We come, seeking shelter and nourishment from the One who created us. Her embrace is always wide enough, her well deep enough, her harvest boun ful enough for all of us. One: Come, all of you who doubt, and worry, and hesitate. Many: We come trus ng that the God who knows us inside out, loves us beyond all doubt. We give thanks and praise that this is so! *OPENING HYMN We Yearn, O Christ for Wholeness #395 The text of this hymn was wri en by Dosia Clarkson, who was inspired by a sermon by UCC minister Harold Wilke who was born without arms. 5 The Good News Is Proclaimed THE GOSPEL READING Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 Brian Zanin, Troop 10 David Arena, Troop 160 Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them. So he told them this parable: There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me. So he divided his property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and travelled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the ci zens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were ea ng; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, How many of my father s hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands. So he set off and went to his father. But while he was s ll far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his slaves, Quickly, bring out a robe the best one and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fa ed calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found! And they began to celebrate. Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on. He replied, Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fa ed calf, because he has got him back safe and sound. Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. But he answered his father, Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with pros tutes, you killed the fa ed calf for him! Then the father said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found. 16 ANNOUNCEMENTS 5

7 The Good Friday Walk For Sharing Around 40 years ago, Tu s Medical School conducted a study which was then published in the Boston Globe. The study showed that not only were many children in the states of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia going hungry day a er day, but that they were suffering brain damage as well because of hunger and poor nutri on. That disclosure prompted the founding of The Good Friday Walk for Sharing by a Massachuse s mother and grew from her few dollars from friends earned walking to church, to an organiza on now benefi ng farm coopera ves, schools, day care and nutri on centers, college scholarships, and poverty assistance. Six million dollars has been raised and donated for projects to combat poverty, par cularly among children, in the affected southern states by walkers and their sponsors. Hancock members and friends have been very generous over the years and a number of them have walked as well. 95% of all monies collected go directly to the projects, as administra ve costs are covered by separate membership. Faith Fenske and Harriet Chmela have par cipated in the 20 mile walk on Good Friday for many years and will again this year. They will be in coffee hour with their sign up sheets un l Good Friday. Hancock Tables Fun! Food! Fellowship with Hancock Folks! Sign up now for Hancock Tables. We'll put you and/or your family in a small group of six to nine other Hancock folks.
