1 Hancock Covenant of Welcome We welcome all who seek to know God. We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ. We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences. We recognize and love each individual as a child of God. We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental ability to join us on our journey of faith. This faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed, for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity. As Paul wrote to the Galatians, In Christ there is no longer Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one. 2 Service of Worship Gathering Together To Praise God MOMENT FOR REFLECTION This Sunday we mark All Saints Day, a day set aside to remember and celebrate the lives of men and women who through the ordinary ac ons of life have taught us the wonders and virtues of faith. Perhaps more than the great heroes who stride across the pages of history, it is the ordinary saints whose witness to love and service that mean the most to us. At Hancock this week four of our saints have died: Faith Armington, Bob Foster, George Deranian, and Adam Dobbs, who graduated from our Hancock Youth Group just two years ago. On this day we acknowledge a great many feelings, including gra tude, sorrow, and confusion. Yet we gather into God's healing Spirit, remembering our faith that no ma er where we are on life's journey, we are welcome here, in the household of God. PRELUDE Two Settings of Ein feste Burg by J.N. Hanff and J.C. Kittel CALL TO WORSHIP (responsively) ONE: Let the call to worship be sounded. Let us gather in sacred me and space. MANY: Here we may encounter the living God. ONE: Let us add our voices to one another, li ing songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. MANY: God is great, and God is good. With thankful hearts and voices, we praise our Creator, our Redeemer, and our Sustainer. *OPENING HYMN For All the Saints #306 PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST It is perfectly fine to choose not to shake hands in an effort to quell germs. 4 4 Service of Worship The Prayers of the People PRAYERS FOR OUR HANCOCK COMMUNITY Nancy Rottman A TIME OF SILENT PRAYER PRAYERS FOR THE WORLD Alex Shea Will Today we pray for our partners in ministry, Heifer Interna onal. For 70 years, Heifer has empowered families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity through sustainable agriculture educa on and gi s of livestock. Families pass on the first female offspring of their livestock to another family, allowing a once impoverished family to become donors and full par cipants in improving their communi es. Hancock will host their 70th Birthday celebra on, for the en re northeast region, today at 2pm in Clark Hall. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into tempta on, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. The Good News Is Proclaimed THE SCRIPTURE READING The First Epistle Reading Hebrews 11:1-3 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the convic on of things not seen. Indeed by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. The Second Epistle Reading Romans 8:26-27, Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for weds. and God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God...What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? Who will bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who jus fies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercede for us. Who will separate us from the love of MUSIC The Great War at 100: Great Britain in Song and Verse Sunday, November 9th at 2:00 p.m. Our new season kicks off with a powerful and moving remembrance of the 1st world war on this, the 100th anniversary of its beginning. 5 12 ANNOUNCEMENTS EDUCATION and FELLOWSHIP MEDITATION & CENTERING PRAYER: Give it a try, learn about what brain research is saying about its benefits Talk & new series of workshops 7 PM Clark Hall, Next Talk Nov. 5th Stan Goldin PhD., Harvard Medical School/Cognitive Rhythms Collaborative There is growing interest in appreciating and directly experiencing the benefits of regular meditation. The Christian contemplative tradition adds another dimension of benefit to those of secular mindfulness meditation-the chance to experience and deepen our relationship with a Divine Presence that we call God. An introduction to the principles and concepts behind Centering Prayer, and hands-on experience of the method, are both part of this new fall series. Stan is a neuroscientist who has had the chance to benefit from ongoing dialogue with a noted Christian Contemplative authority, Fr. Thomas Keating. We will share these dialogues on the benefits of Centering Prayer; what neuroscience is suggesting of those benefits; and also, Fr. Keating s mind-stretching perspective on broader philosophical questions of human evolution and destiny. Harvest Potluck Supper Saturday, November 8, from 6 8pm in Clark Hall Come and celebrate the season with our Harvest Pot Luck Supper. This is a wonderful way to meet new friends and connect with old friends. Please bring dishes ready to serve, including the serving utensils. Next Pearson Room Session Listening November 9th First and Third Thursday Discussion Group Next Session Nov. 6 at 10 am in Kathie Stuart Delving into the different problems and solu ons that Islam, Chris anity, Buddhism, Judaism, Confucianism, Yoruba Religion, Daoism and Atheism strive to combat, God is Not One is an indispensable guide to the ques ons human beings have asked for millennia and to the disparate paths we are taking to answer them today. Service of Worship Christ? Will hardship or distress, or persecu on, or famine, or nakedness, or peril or sword? As it is wri en: "For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these thing we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers nor height, nor depth nor anything else in all crea on will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
