2 MOMENT FOR REFLECTION GATHERING TOGETHER TO PRAISE GOD This morning we reaffirm the baptisms of this year's confirmation class and we welcome them as members of the Church. Throughout this year, the 8 th and 9 th graders have met in the Upper Room to learn about the Christian faith, to discuss its complexities, to contemplate its meaning, and to listen for God s call in their lives. They stand before you today to proclaim their faith and to join together with this congregation and with the wider church as we walk our faith journey together, seeking God, following Jesus, guided by the Holy Spirit. PRELUDE Finale and Fughetta J.K F. Fischer CALL TO WORSHIP ONE: We are pilgrims, travelers on this faith journey. We walk along the pathways of those that have gone before us, following the landmarks that led them. MANY: But for each generation, in each place and time, and for each seeker who travels this way, the road seems different. ONE: Today we celebrate tomorrow s leaders, the heroes of a history yet to be made. We hold out our hands to them and beckon them to join us on the journey. MANY: As they walk beside us, we may tell them our stories, but we may not tell them the way. We can tell them of our questions, but the answers must come from within their own hearts. ONE: We celebrate a new generation of faith, a new branch with its leaves about to blossom. MANY: May they transform our lives and the life of this Church. Thanks be to God. *OPENING HYMN Lift High the Cross #S-18 WORDS OF WELCOME PRAYER OF INVOCATION Service of Worship Emelia Attridge GATHERING SONG Come on Children, to the Gospel Feast #S-3 CHILDREN'S TIME HANCOCK UPDATE THE MORNING OFFERING Service of Worship Come on children to the Gospel Feast Gather round, gather round. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. THE INVITATION THE RITE OF CONFIRMATION THE SCRIPTURE READING Colossians 3:12-17 As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with COVENANT OF WELCOME We welcome all who seek to know God. We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ. We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences. We recognize and love each individual as a child of God. We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental ability to join us on our journey of faith. This faith journey indeed calls us not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed, for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity. As Paul wrote to the Galatians, In Christ there is no longer Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one. THE LAYING ON OF HANDS AND GIVING OF GIFTS CONGREGATIONAL WELCOME Andrew Harris With joy we welcome you as sisters and brothers into the family of Christ s disciples. 5 Spring Annual Meeting of the Congregation All members of the congregation are asked to attend the Spring Annual meeting to be held May 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary immediately following morning worship, to consider and act upon the following: Article I To receive the report of the Officers responsible to the Membership Article II To hear the report of the Nominating Committee and election of officers and committee members. Article III To amend the bylaws to implement change in fiscal year approved by Standing Committee Article IV To transact any further business that may legally come before this meeting. Martha Sheridan, Clerk The Jameson Singers: Mozart Requiem Sunday, May 14 th at 3:00 p.m. $15 suggested donation The Jameson Singers will perform Mozart's powerful Requiem in a completion by Mozart scholar Robert Levin. Left incomplete at his death, Mozart's Requiem was completed at the time by his student Sussmayer. Dr. Levin has stripped out Sussmayer's changes and additions and completed the work in greater accord with Mozart's own compositional practices. The result is a piece both familiar and unexpected at the same time. Also on the program are Mozart's otherwordly Ave verum corpus, and two works by Heinrich Schutz. The Singers, now in their 7 th season, are a highly acclaimed 60 voice chorus under the direction of nationally known conductor Dr. Jameson Marvin, the former Director of Choral Activities at Harvard University from 1978 to Composed of many of his former students, the group has performed to glowing reviews and been featured at the American Choral Directors Association convention. Farewell to Nancy Rottman Nancy Rottman s last Sunday at Hancock is June 18. In her four years at Hancock Nancy has served us well as a Student Minister and the Congregational Care Coordinator. She has generously shared her many talents, her deep compassion, and her boundless energy with us. She has been with many of us through seasons of joy as well as pain, always bringing the light and love of Christ into our midst. Nancy has completed all things necessary to be ordained as a minister in the United Church of Christ. The only thing missing is finding her own church; a flock of her own to shepherd. To that end, we send Nancy forth with our blessing, our deep gratitude, our love, and our prayers. To show Nancy our love and appreciation we are planning to present her with some gifts during the June 18 service followed by a reception. If you would like to contribute towards a gift for Nancy please send a check to Hancock Church to the attention of Linda DaGraca with Nancy Rottman s name in the memo line. If you would like to convey your best wishes to Nancy, express your appreciation for her work at Hancock or would like to share a special memory you have of her, please send an or a card and it will be included in the memory book we will presenting her with. You may send your s to: Margy Keeping: mkeeping@verizon.net and your cards to Hancock Church attention: Church Administrator. Meet with Barbara at Her Weekly Office Hours at Starbucks! We will be hosting June Cooper of City Mission on June 11 for another Hancock Read, with the book The Third Reconstruction: How a Moral Movement is Overcoming the Politics of Division and Fear (see below for more information) providing occasions to visit with our mission partners such as The Outdoor Church, and leading explorations such as the UCC White Privilege curriculum during the 11 o clock hour. Look for more information in the bulletins and s as we learn to care for one another and grow together. Congregational Read with June Cooper & Barbara Callaghan All are welcome to join Hancock Church on Sunday, June 11 from 11:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. for a discussion of the book The Third Reconstruction; How a Moral Movement is Overcoming the Politics of Division and Fear by Rev. Dr. William J Barber II. The discussion will be led by the Rev. June Cooper, the Executive Director of Boston City Mission, and Rev. Barbara Callaghan, Minister of Hancock Church. This event will be held in the Pearson Room. Andover Newton & Hancock Church to Continue Historic Partnership Since the 1960s, Andover Newton Theological School and Hancock Church UCC in Lexington, MA have worked together to educate students for congregational ministry. When Andover Newton s leaders decided to close the Newton, MA campus and relocate to New Haven, CT to form a partnership with Yale Divinity School (YDS), many in both the seminary and the church feared an end to the continuous partnership between the two historic institutions. Dean Sarah Drummond and Senior Minister Paul Shupe decided, however, to rework the cooperative model so that a student in a residential program which YDS is in a slightly more distant location could participate in the program. Soon after this redesign took place, an ideal candidate emerged to become the first AN-YDS Cooperative Ministry Fellow at Hancock Church, Genevieve Genna Beatty. Genna hails from Pennsylvania and is in-discernment toward ministry in the United Church of Christ. She graduated in 2016 from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania with a major in communications. Musically inclined, Genna plays a variety of instruments and leads music for Andover Newton at Yale s weekly worship service, Emmaus. Her most noteworthy gift, however, is in the area of public speaking, especially preaching. Genna is a simply outstanding orator, says Andover Newton s dean Sarah Drummond, who is Genna s academic advisor. She has a quick and hungry intellect and is a natural-born theologian: always questioning, but with a palpable sense of wonder. Genna will join David Clark, current Andover Newton Cooperative Ministry Fellow who serves Hancock as minister for children and families. When asked what drew her to commit to transitioning into ministry via Hancock Church, beginning in the fall of 2018 with a gradual getting-to-know-you process before then, Genna did not hesitate before saying, It s the people. She expresses abundant enthusiasm that she will have the chance to make her way into ministry through a church that is not only esteemed and historic but also has a heart for educating clergy. Hancock s leaders express similar excitement. We are thrilled to continue our historic relationship with Andover Newton, and pleased to welcome Genna Beatty to our ministry team, says Senior Minister Paul Shupe. Hancock Church has high hopes for Genna, and for our shared ministry with Andover Newton at Yale

9 CHANGING HANCOCK S FISCAL YEAR Frequently Asked Questions Q: The recommendation is to change the church s fiscal year so that instead of running from January 1 December 31, the fiscal year will be July 1 June 30. Why the change? A: Nearly everyone understands that a new year begins at Hancock every fall, as we return from our busy summers. Celebration Sunday in September is the true beginning of the new year. Our ministers, staff and committees all plan new ventures to begin in the fall. They begin planning for their new programs and activities in the late spring and into the summer. The new fiscal year matches the true program year. Q: Why does that matter? A: Currently our fiscal year and our program year are mismatched, and work at cross-purposes. Under the current system, no new financing can be envisioned for new programs planned in the spring, because our hands are tied by the budget adopted the previous January. When staff and committees are planning new ventures, they can t spend in new ways. Moreover, new and exciting programs can t be included in the fall pledge drive because they re already underway, and it s hard to raise new funds for programs that are already happening. Q: Does this mean that the pledge drive will be moved to spring? A: It does. The Stewardship Committee will now have some sense of what the staff and committees hope to accomplish in the new church year beginning in the fall. They can tell us about new ideas, and ask us to get excited about giving so that new ventures can be funded fully. Q: Won t this be confusing? I pay taxes according to the calendar year, but the church will be asking for a pledge stretching from July of one year to June the next. A: It may be a bit confusing at first. But you can be certain that every January you ll receive a record from Hancock of all that you have given in the previous calendar year. The IRS won t know or care that you ve given as a part of two different pledge campaigns. We ll find good ways to report clearly to you on the giving that you do to make Hancock s ministries possible. Q: What about the Annual Meeting in January? A: Instead of having two separate congregational meetings, one in January and one in May, we ll just have one in May. The Annual Meeting in May will receive financial reports, vote on the proposed budget, elect new officers and committee members, so that we ll be ready for the new church year to come. The Moderators, Standing Committee, or a sufficient number of members of the congregation may call for additional congregational meetings at any time, according to the By-Laws of Hancock Church. Q: What about the year that you make this change? A: We think that the smoothest way to make the change is to extend the 2017 fiscal year from January 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018; an 18 month year. We ll ask our members and friends to continue to give in the first six months of 2018 at the same level (or slightly higher!) that they have been giving for 2017, and maintain spending levels as close to those in the approved 2017 budget as possible. There will likely be some uncertainty, but we have confidence that the transition can be made relatively smoothly. Q: Are we sure that this is necessary? A: Our ministers, staff and committees have been frustrated for years by the fact that our budget and spending levels are at cross-purposes with the elections of our committees and with the way that we actually live and plan here at Hancock. Committees elected in May have spending levels set by the requests of previous committees. Staff would need to plan 18 months in advance to obtain funding for a new venture, and they can t plan for new things even before they know whether the current activities are effective. We believe that these frustrations are holding us back as we plan and dream, and that it is time to address them. Q. Paul, I know you and staff like this idea, but what about the rest of the leadership? How do they feel about all this change? A. The lay leadership appreciates the issues that the clergy and staff have highlighted and are supportive about this change. Not only are the moderators behind this change, but also the Treasurer, The Chair of the Finance Committee and the rest of Standing Committee
