1 H H Arvey PaRk K CONTENTS: Church Corner Lighter Side Thom s Thoughts Birthdays Serving Schedule Calendar Prayer Requests THOM S THOUGHTS Is summer over yet? How has your summer been going? For me this summer has been a jam-packed couple of months. It has been way too busy with too many things that have just come up. I am ready to move on to the fall. It s my favorite season anyway. Seasons come and go. Events pass by as scheduled. Our lives move forward, sometimes with interruptions, the unexpected and even the occasional full stop. We plan things and look forward to them, then they happen. We enjoy them or not. The memories fill us, then we move on to the next thing, planned or not. There are times that life just seems to be a never-ending stream of unexpected, unplanned, unwanted stuff that just piles on and piles up. Is there another way? Can there be a better way to live? Doesn t life need more to it than simply waiting for the next thing to happen? A life lived with Jesus can be so much more than what the world alone offers us. Deuteronomy 30:20 says, The Lord is your life. Is the Lord YOUR life? Does Jesus have a place in YOUR life? To take that a bit further, Does Jesus have an important place in your life? Sometimes we include Jesus, but too often only as an afterthought or add-on. Other times we may not even think to include Jesus in some parts of our lives at all. When we say we are Christians, we do best to make Jesus the primary one in our life. Jesus himself said in John 10:10, I have come that (you) may have life, and have it to the full. Do you want your life to be as full of the goodness and presence and love and power of God as it can be? Do you want your life to have purpose and meaning and value? Then make sure that you include Jesus in everything. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33, Seek first God s kingdom and his righteousness, and all these other things will be given to you as well. That sounds pretty good to me. In Christ, Thom Harvey Park Christian Church 3401 South Lowell Blvd. Denver CO Office Office Hours: Mon.-Fri. 10:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Vol. 57 August Issue No. 8

3 Then came the navy, I thought I was a man. But things became scary as we neared Japan. There were three thousand men aboard, And all at once, it seemed to me, We all decided we needed the Lord. Once again This poem was written by Bill Londen. Bill was a long-time member of Harvey Park. He passed away recently and this poem was read at his funeral. We thought it was worth passing on! LEARNING TO PRAY With mother s help, I learned to pray, Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep. I felt so good when I hear her say, Little Billy is As time went by, and I got older My prayers became a little bolder. I learned that I could talk to God, That He would always hear me. And, when I listened, I could hear Him. I was still Then came the teen years, full of fun. I was busy and happy, always on the run. My car might need a mechanic s touch, But other than that there wasn t much That I thought I couldn t handle by myself. I had nearly stopped When the war was over and I had returned, It wasn t long before I learned That even tho my body was whole, Something strong had touched my soul. I needed to reach out to the Lord To say thanks, and to ask for help. Once again Then came marriage to my wonder wife. She s my love, my joy, my companion for life. In a few years two beautiful daughters came To make our family complete, and it wasn t Long before I could say: My little girls are The years raced by into middle age. The girls are gone, their own families to start. They may have moved from my house, But not from my heart. Adding them and their families to prayers each day, I knew I was still I ve now reached retirement the golden years. It is a time of enjoyment, memories, and yes, fears. But, as I reflect on all the days of my life, Most filled with joy and love, but some with strife. I know Lord, what got me thru, not I lord, but You. May I never cease Bill Londen 5/4/98
4 HARVEY PARK CHRISTIAN CHURCH 3401 SOUTH LOWELL BLVD. DENVER CO Web Site hpccdenver.org ON THE LIGHTER SIDE HOW TO GET TO HEAVEN A teacher asked the children in her Sunday School class, "If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would I get into heaven?" "NO!" the children all answered. "If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would I get into heaven?" Again, the answer was "NO!" "Well," she continued, "then how can I get to heaven?" In the back of the room, a five-year-old boy shouted out, "You gotta be dead!"
