H H Arvey PaRk K Harvey Park Christian Church 3401 South Lowell Blvd. Denver CO Office Office Hours: Mon.-Fri. 10:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Vol. 55 September Issue No. 9 Thom s Thoughts CONTENTS: Church Corner Lighter Side Thom s Thoughts Birthdays Serving Schedule Calendar Prayer Requests King Soopers cards A Disciple s Path New Ministry Team Reconciliation Offering World Communion Sunday Stewardship Campaign 2015 We have begun together on A Disciple s Path! This is a spiritual growth emphasis to help each of get stronger in The 8 Things that help us grow into Christian maturity. So far we have over 45 people signed up for three small groups. Also, at least 67 people have taken a copy of the book, A Disciple s Path. Those are wonderful numbers! But numbers are only part of the story. Having a book will make no difference if you do not read it. Signing up for a group will not matter if you do not participate in the group. Sitting through church will make no difference if you do not truly worship. The point is that we must each fully participate in this for it to have any impact on our lives. What will make A Disciple s Path very powerful is for each of us to these 4 things: Do the daily reading Participate fully in your small group Share wholeheartedly in worship each week Pray for ourselves and each other as we travel A Disciple s Path together When we each do all of these things our church will feel a very wonderful and powerful impact. The Lord will make us into new creations as Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:17. Now that is not to say that there is anything wrong with any of us. Nor is there anything wrong with our church. But, as we each participate fully in this spiritual growth emphasis, God can make us into something even more wonderful! That is the entire point. When we dive headfirst into The 8 Things through A Disciple s Path, the Lord is going to use this opportunity to really grow us spiritually. He will make us even more fully into the people and the church that he wants us to be. So together, let s enjoy traveling on A Disciple s Path! In Christ, Thom
A DISCIPLE S PATH: ARE YOU ON IT? Here is what we need to be doing now as we travel The Path together. Pray for yourself & each other. Do it every day. Read the book. Each of us should already have started. If you haven t yet, go ahead and begin now. Books are still available. Small Groups begin on the following dates: Sunday September 27 > 9 am to 9:50 Tuesday September 29 > 7 pm to 8:30 Wednesday September 30 > 10 am to 11:30 Groups will meet on the same day of the week for the entire 7 weeks. You can still join a group. Just show up! Preaching will be on each of The 8 Things through November 15. Be in church each week. ALL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING TEAM Sometimes we have difficulty getting enough people at our planning meetings to really get done what we need to do. That is a fairly common situation in churches. No need to lament about it. Instead, we are trying something new. Sometimes it can be helpful to move in new directions to get things done. We will combine our ministry teams into one Ministry Planning Team! This new team will meet on the second Saturday of each month from 9:45 to 11:45. This is right after the monthly Elders meeting. It is also the same day as Work Day. The Ministry Planning Team will include the ministries of: worship, fellowship, kids & teens, discipling, evangelism & outreach. Property and Elders & Deacons will continue on their existing schedules. (continued on nest page)
Each of the leaders of these ministries will be part of the new group. We also want everyone else who has been, or who would like to be part of these six ministries to join us in this new way of planning our ministries. We will try this for three months to see if it works well for us. The scheduled dates are: October 10 November 14 December 12 Please join us as we plan the ministries the Lord wants us at HPCC to be doing! It s going to be exciting!! RECONCILIATION OFFERING OPPORTUNITY IS HERE Back in the 1960 s racial relations were tense at best. Cities burned and people died as decades, even centuries of oppression erupted. Our denomination, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was one of the first churches to respond with a compassion that called for reconciliation. Thus was born the Reconciliation Ministry of the Disciples. We went into our struggling world and brought warring parties together. For over 50 years the Disciples have worked hard with communities to build racial reconciliation. Apostle Paul spoke about this in 2 Corinthians 5: He said that God reconciled the world to himself through Christ & gave us the ministry of reconciliation He has committed to us the ministry of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We live in a world, in a nation where racial reconciliation still needs to take place. We at HPCC can join in this ministry of healing & wholeness through our church s Reconciliation Ministry. On September 27 & October 4 we will have the opportunity to give an offering to the work of this ministry. Let us give wholeheartedly and faithfully. Let us also pray for our nation and our world as the need for reconciliation continues. Please do not ignore this offering.
WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY OCTOBER 4 Each year on the first Sunday of October we celebrate World Communion Sunday. This year we will remember it on October 4 th. Many churches only celebrate communion once a month or once a quarter or perhaps only once a year. World Communion Sunday is a specific day when all churches that will do share in the Lord s Supper on the same day. Our hope is that this can be used by our Lord to promote a common witness to the world around us of the Oneness of Christ s Body, the Church. Make sure you are in church for this special day! HPCC Stewardship Campaign for 2016 Coming Soon! It is nearly time for us to be praying & thinking about our offerings for You will soon receive information in the mail about it. The chapters about giving in A Disciple s Path will help you prepare for your 2016 pledge. Study it. Pray about it. Talk it over. Make your pledge. Build HPCC. Join the Lord in ministry! Commitment Sunday is October 25. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY 70 YEARS LYLE & RUDENE KYLE Lyle & Ruedene will celebrate their 70 th wedding anniversary on October 19 th. They have asked in lieu of gifts to please write a simple note describing a memory or thought of them. Please send cards to: Lyle & Ruedene Kyle, c/o Kurt Kyle, 2530 Cocklebur Dr. Gillette, WY

It was his first experience and he was quite flustered when the guests began to arrive. Noticing a strange lady about to sit down in a pew reserved for family, he hurried to her.
