1 THIS WEEK AT FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH For the week of August 29, 2018 Make plans to attend the annual Fall Kick-Off on September 9, 2018, when we kick off our programs and opportunities for the coming year. This is an exciting time at FCC Coralville, as we embrace new and old friends, support mission opportunities in our community and around the world, grow deeper in faith, and enjoy the energy that the youth bring to the church. Schedule 10:00 Worship for all ages w/ presentation of bibles 11:15 Lunch is served! (hamburgers, hotdogs, salads, fruit) 11:45 Carnival games, crafts, bounce house, cake walk & bingo On September 9, join us for worship at 10:00 and celebrate the youth in our midst as we present the 2nd graders with their own Bibles. Plan to stay for lunch, prepared and served by volunteers, with carnival games, bounce house, cake walk, bingo and fellowship afterwards. We will also have an information table to learn about (and sign up for) Sunday School, music and mission opportunities available for all ages this fall. September 9 is an opportunity for people of all ages to come together (invite a friend, neighbor or family member, too)! If you are interested in bringing a side dish or helping with a game, please visit this link or speak to Kara Seaton (icdisciple.kids@gmail.com). Dear Friends, A NOTE FROM YOUR PASTOR A holiday weekend is upon us. I expect there are several of you who have plans to enjoy the long weekend with family and friends or doing some traveling. I also expect many of us will be together in worship on Sunday. This Sunday we are going to look at John 15 - a passage that uses the image of the vine and branches to talk about our life of faith. This is the passage that is at the center of next year s General Assembly theme of Abide. So, this week we are going to explore together what it means to abide in Jesus and in each other. I hope, if you are around, that you ll be here for this conversation. I hope to see you Sunday! Jill

2 This Week at First Christian Church August 29, 2018 UPCOMING EVENTS Wednesday Bible Study meets at 12:30pm each week. August 29 - Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, September 5 - Mark 7:24-37 DO YOU LOVE TO SING? Join our short term choir to prepare a song for World Communion Sunday (October 7). Rehearsals will be at 7pm on the following Wednesdays: September 12 and 26, as well as Saturday, October 6 at 2pm. ~IOWA CITY FOOD PACK EVENT~ Join the FCC group on Saturday, September 29, 9:00-11:00 AM at St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church (140 Gathering Place Ln) to pack meals that feed children all over the world. There are jobs for children and adults ages 5 to 105 (children will need an adult to attend and there are sit-down jobs for those who are not able to be on their feet). FCC has taken a group for the past 3 years and we always have a great time, while making a difference. Please contact Jon Feaver (jcfeaver@yahoo.com) with any questions about this event. You must sign up in advance to participate please Kara Seaton (icdisciple.kids@gmail.com) by Sept 16 if you would like to take part! Coralville Community Food Pantry Did you know? We learned a lot from John Boller on Sunday... FCC was one of several congregations that helped start the Coralville Food Pantry in The CFP is open four times a week and offers client choice so that people can choose food they will eat and that fits their needs. In 2017 they served 2,480 people during 9,249 visits, which amounted to 285,000 lbs. of food. They also offer a school break nutrition program to provide food for kids when not at school. During the last school year 1,306 kids were served 23,472 meals. The CFP also offers community meals. In 2017 they hosted 3 meals and served people. They also have a seed library which is available to all. Join the Coralville Community Food Pantry in Offering a Community Meal This is the third year that the Coralville Food Pantry and Coralville Public Library have been offering Community Meals. The next one will take place on September 21. In addition to the opportunity to come out and enjoy the meal and activities together, there are opportunities for you to volunteer by helping with food prep (September 20 and 21) and helping in various roles at the meal. To sign up to help, visit this website. Sunday, September 2, 2018 SCRIPTURE: John 15:1-5 SERMON TITLE: What Does IT Mean To Abide?

3 This Week at First Christian Church August 29, 2018 Carolyn Boerner is one of several people who has been tending to the church grounds this summer. For Carolyn planting new flowers and putting in new brick edging to make the front beds look more finished is what she calls a labor of love. As you begin making plans for fall and winter, please remember that the following opportunities will be coming: Winter Clothing Distribution: We will collect winter coats and more September 23 - October 7. The Distribution takes place on Saturday, October 13 with volunteer opportunities on the 11th, 12th, and 13th. More information will be coming soon. Also, Gifts for Parents, the opportunity for kids to shop for items for their parents/guardians, will take place in December. We will be collecting gift items later this fall. Again, watch for more information. Around 450 years before Jesus, the prophet Nehemiah heard some bad news about conditions in Jerusalem. The city still lay in ruins following an invasion by the Babylonian army many years before. The news caused Nehemiah to sit down and cry. After mourning for days, he felt that he should lead men to rebuild the wall and gates around Jerusalem. He organized a work force and, despite some opposition, they rebuilt the wall. A well-known verse describes the accomplishment: So we rebuilt the wall, and all the wall was joined together to half its height; for the people had a mind to. Choose the correct ending to the statement: A. be protected B. work C. serve D. live (The correct answer can be found in Nehemiah 4:6, NRSV)
