A Message from FR. Rob. Grand Knight Report Dear Brother Knights: The Season of Lent will soon be upon us. Ash Wednesday is February 14 th. These 40 days are an annual opportunity to stop and reflect on the state of our discipleship. Think of it a yearly spiritual check-up. Just as we bring our cars in for regular maintenance or our bodies in for a physical; our spiritual lives need care and attention. I encourage you during these 40 days to make a conscious effort to grow as a disciple. Take on a few more moments of prayer each day. Think of one or two acts of mercy that can be accomplished within the week. Find ways to share the blessings that God have given to you with others. The coffee social you hosted in January was a great opportunity to make the parish more aware of the good things the Knights do and to allow you chances to engage with the parishioners and prospective members. It is all about relationships. May this lent find you all spiritually renewed as we prepare for Easter. Fr. Rob Ash Wednesday February 14th Worthy Brother Knights: If I had not said it to you all already. Happy New Year! Let us pray that 2018 will be at the least, prosperous as the outgoing year was. As a council, we continue forging ahead (with the help of God) with our charitable work. We completed the last of the Confirmation meals in mid December. Our support and presence continues strong while serving at the Downtown Mission. We have continued our work with the Special Olympics Bottle Drive that was held January 13 th, and I might say, we did pretty good raising funds for them! Well done Worthy Brothers, well done indeed! I would like to offer some thoughts on the past membership drive. First and foremost, I would like to thank Fr. Rob and the parish to allow us to host the coffee socials that were held on January 20 th and 21 st. These socials also became our membership drives, where I believe we did pretty good in handing out Form 100 s to prospective new members. I would like to also thank Fr. Rob for putting a plug into the end of each mass for our drive and to Keith Campbell for also saying a few words, at the pulpit, about what the Knights do for the good of mankind. I, myself, was able to reach out to an individual and give him the Form with my signature, to fill out. And, don t forget about those ASK ME buttons! We all stood out. Thank you to all the Knights that came, helped serve, and above all walked around the room introducing themselves to all that were there. We also got Form 100 s out to others without them attending the socials. Some of these February 5,

gentlemen already know us and are participating together with us. Here is my point, and I bet some will agree with me. I hear it from State and Supreme about these scheduled membership drives. We too, look at holding drives to get new members. But as a (practicing Catholic) Knight, who are at different events and charities, and also doing good things for the parish; isn t it worth something to just reach out to someone new sitting in the pews? Get to know him and maybe invite him to try us out before committing? It doesn t hurt to reach out and ask. You are advertising on behalf of the Knights. I would also like to touch on thanking all that have put in their hours for the Annual Survey of Fraternal Activities. These hours are important to keep our charitable status with the Governments. If you have not done so, please do! You can also keep track of your hours throughout the year by saving that link that was given out in the last newsletter. You can add as many entries as you like. Just make sure you enter the correct year and the correct date! Trust me on this one I inputted mine three times over for 2017! Another important request that must be brought up is the filling in of STATE COUNCIL SERVICE PROGRAM AWARDS form #STSP, by ALL directors and chairmen. We do like our awards, so if you have not done so, please do! We are trying to schedule another information evening with Dan Pergolesi this February for the completion of these forms. We are planning either the 15 th or 30 th. (Just a friendly reminder: Do all directors have an assistant who can help out with this?) We can discuss this further at our next General Meeting which will be held Tuesday February 6 th, after mass. Also don t forget about the turkey soup after the meeting! (Thank you, Mike and Rita Agius). I would like to shout this out to the membership. Though we still have time, (yet time is racing along), we need to prepare for our council elections. I will be staying on as promised, unless some else would like to stand. There are other positions in the council that will be coming up and will need to be filled. If you can, then please stand. I also encourage you to seek out about the position you may be interested in. Just as a heads up, there will be an appointed position coming up. We will need a Financial Secretary. Please give it thought. Again, if you have any ideas and or comments, please feel free to contact me by either phoning and or texting me at (leave a message, if I don t pick up) or by at tbirdrules50@gmail.com. Hope to see you soon at our meetings, and support us at various events we do! Just an hour or two of your time does a whole lot of good! Peace to one and all. Vivat Jesus Dave Orosz GK 8919 February 5,

Deputy Grand Knight Report: Brother Knights, Our council is starting this New year on a promising trend. We have put multiple new members through the degrees with more to come. Our yearly reports, audits and award applications are being diligently completed by our executive team, and we have a year of exciting program offerings ahead. Further, our charities committee has begun a comprehensive review of our giving policy in order to keep a majority of our donations local. We feel that this approach will serve to make the money we give more impactful to the community in which it is made. I look forward to continuing this promising work with the charities committee in the coming months, in addition to seeking out other administrative areas in which modernization and streamlining will allow our council to become more impactful and visible within the city. I hope that you and your loved ones will have a blessed new year. My best wishes, Noah Berthiaume Deputy Grand Knight Chancellor Report: Please keep all who are sick or in distress in your thoughts and prayers. Also, if you are aware of a Brother Knight or family member who is in need of our prayers, please pass along their name(s) to me, so I may reach out to them. Financial Secretary Message: As of January 26, we have only 32 members who have yet to pay their 2018 membership dues. I want to thank all the members who have already paid as it saves the council the cost of mailing out the second notices. For those members who have yet to pay, please do so as soon as possible as this is the funds that is used to operate the council. If you have financial difficulty at this time, give me or the Grand Knight a call and we will be more than happy to assist you. When making out a cheque for your dues, please make it out to Fr. Paul J. F. Wattson Council 8919 not to me personally. If you have changed your address or telephone number, please let me know so that I can make the changes at the council and Supreme Council level. We want to make sure that you get your Columbia Magazine. The winner of their dues for paying by December 31, 2017, was PGK Pierre Doyon. Congratulation! Financial Secretary. Bob Cayea Gentlemen, remember February 14 is Valentines Day, let s not forget to let our significant others know how much they mean to us. It is because of them we are able to all the good things we do. Thank you. Not to mention, with 6 more weeks of Keith Campbell winter, why make it any colder than it Chancellor. needs to be February 5,

Report from the 4 th Degree Greetings Brother Knights, I want to extend best wishes of a Happy and prosperous New Year, on behalf of the RT. Rev.. Wilfrid J. Langlois Assembly and our 4 th Degree members. As we begin a new calendar year, we look forward to many new and exciting events in each of our lives. We should look to include God, church and steadfastness to discipleship in these plans. Each of us lead very busy and demanding lives, with commitments to our families, our jobs, and many extra curricular activities. Though we should never loose sight of our faith and devotion to almighty God. We as Knights of Columbus, took a pledge to work to become the Simon of Cyrene, examples for other men of our faith to follow. I extend an invitation to each of my 3 rd Degree Brother Knights to come join the members of the 4 th Degree, as we march forward, standing shoulder to shoulder with those who serve to protect our rights and freedoms, to also stand for the rights and freedoms to profess our faith and the pillars for which it stands. I have mentioned in many of my previous submissions, the need for new members in this rank of our Order, and I will continue to do so as I truly believe in what the 4 th Degree advocates and the need to elevate the Knights visibility in our community. As with the 3 rd Degree, our members are aging, so I extend a hand to my Brothers, will you help us carry this cross? Please contact me if you are interested in becoming a 4 th Degree member or would like to learn more of what we as Sir Knights are. Vivat Jesus, K of C Choir Do you like to sing? Ever thought of joining the K of C Choir? We are always on the hunt For new members. You don't have to be a member of Council 8919 to join. There is no age restriction on membership. All you need is a desire to sing and make a commitment to serve our church at two 10 a.m. masses a month at our church. We practice on Monday's at 6:30 p.m. and have fun doing so. Just recently one of the choir members and his son joined the council. Congratulations to Carmine and Davide Perri. We welcome you wholeheartedly into the Order. Our music and schedule are posted on the Council Website. Take a look at it and see what we do and who we are. Bob Cayea Choir Director Dan E. Pergolesi : Faithful Navigator RT. Rev. Wilfrid J. 6 Family of the Month January 2018 Leo was born in Strangolagalli Italy in 1959 and his wife Kathy was born in Windsor in They were married at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Windsor in They have 3 children; Ryan (28), Derek (26 and married to Katie), and Katelyn (23). The Viselli family are members of Ste. Anne Parish in Tecumseh. Leo has worked in sales at Windsor Factory Supply for 33 years. Kathy worked at the General Motors Transmission plant as a financial analyst for 27 years before moving to Windsor Factory in 2010 in the same position. Leo joined the Knights in February 2016 and immediately became an active member. Leo is a co-captain of the Council 8919 cooking team, volunteers at the Downtown Mission, and is on the Board of Directors of the Essex 73 hockey team. He also works bingos for both our council and the Essex 73 s. Derek coaches 11 year-old travel hockey for Windsor Minor Hockey. Ryan has volunteered in the past, coaching hockey and reading to school children. Katelyn graduated from the University of Windsor in 2015 and is currently in her second year at Fanshawe College in the Respiratory program. The Viselli family came to the rescue at the Hospice Dinner in October, helping out when a shortage of student helpers showed up to serve the meals to approximately 200 guests. Council 8919 thanks the entire Viselli Family and it is an honor to name Leo and Kathy Viselli and their family, as our Family of the Month for January Family of the Month February 2018 Ian was born in Stirling, Scotland and came to Canada in Marleen was born in Toronto. In 1971, both Ian and Marleen were teachers. Ian was teaching science at Massey Secondary School in Windsor while Marleen was teaching grade one in St. Raphael Catholic School in Toronto. Independently, each took a trip to Curacao during March Break where they met. They were married in Toronto on July 1, They decided to make their home in Forest Glade where they began attending Mass at the Parish of the Atonement (at that time held in the gymnasium of L. A. Desmarais School). In 1974 Megan and in 1977 Sean were born. A grandchild, Payton, came along in Megan was born with multiple disabilities and attended special needs programs at Notre Dame School and Holy Names High School in South Windsor. Sean attended L.A. Desmarais and St. Joseph's High School. He served for many years as an altar boy at Atonement and was active in the Core movement which led young people towards Christ through various spiritual, formative and social activities. Sean has been teaching for 10 years at Lakeshore Discovery School. His teaching assignments have included French, science, instructional technology and special education. Payton will graduate this year from L'Essor French High School. He was a member of the Championship football team at the school. He is considering going to the University of Windsor later this year and try out for Lancer football. After his marriage to Marleen, Ian continued to teach at Massey until 1973 at which time Dave Wilbur he moved to the University of Windsor as a Family Director professor in the Faculty of Education. He remained there until his retirement in February 5,

In his teaching and administrative career, Ian progressed from Full Professor to Coordinator of the Teacher Training Program to Dean of the Faculty of Education. In his 42 years of teaching, Ian taught students from elementary school to the doctoral level. It is estimated that he has taught thousands of teachers, principals and supervisory officers in his career, many of whom are teaching or have taught in Windsor and Essex county schools. Although Ian attended mass regularly at Atonement with Marleen, Megan and Sean, he was not Catholic. It was after he retired that he took the R.C.I.A. program. Upon conclusion of R.C.I.A. he joined the Knights. Since then Ian has served as a mentor in R.C.I.A. and has participated in the parish as an Usher, altar server, and Eucharist Minister. He regularly supervises bingo events for the Knights and for the parish. Upon moving to Windsor, Marleen completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Windsor in Psychology. Her teaching career never started up again as she began to care for Megan. As indicated previously, Megan was born with multiple disabilities including developmental delay, cerebral palsy, seizures, autism and dual diagnosis. Providing for Megan took, and still takes, much of Marleen's time. Marleen has tackled these challenges with hard work, dedication and creativity. She has become a respected, competent leader in helping other parents to cope with a special needs child. Marleen has been instrumental, along with a small core of similar-minded parents, in developing resource centers for families with individuals with disabilities. Each of these centers has a focus: Windsor Essex Family Network (advocacy), Windsor Essex Brokerage for Personal Supports (facilitation), and a Snoezelon Room (sensory interaction). Besides these community efforts, Marleen has found time to be a member of the CWL and to be the Eucharist Minister scheduler for all weekend masses throughout the year. If these involvements are not enough to keep them busy, Ian and Marleen coordinate the running of a private home purchased for Megan and a roommate who has similar disabilities. This townhouse was designed uniquely to cater to the needs of both individuals (ramp, wheelchair accessible, wide doors, low windows, open spaces, accessible garage for a handicapped vehicle). The home is staffed 24/7 and has a live-in caregiver who is supported by a cadre of personal support workers. Ian and Marleen oversee all aspects of running the house such as staffing, budgeting, scheduling, maintenance, financing, supervising, hiring, trouble-shooting etc. The home is approaching ten years of existence and continues to serve as a safe, pleasant, comfortable environment from which Megan and her roommate enter into and contribute to the local community. It is an honor to announce the family of Ian and Marleen Crawford as our Family of the Month for February Dave Wilbur Family Director February 5,

Life Matters Andrew J. Despins, Knights of Columbus Insurance RRSPs We don't have to tell you why it's smart to own a Registered Retirement Savings Plan. Studies indicate that in order to retire and maintain your Standard of Living you will require approximately 70% of your present income. The Knights of Columbus offers an R.R.S.P. with a difference. It is truly an "Interest Sensitive" plan, competitive with any R.R.S.P. available, but it also offers a number of additional benefits: Each year you will receive a fully detailed statement which tells you everything you want to know about your investments. At retirement it can automatically convert to a Lifetime Pension at no extra cost. In addition to everything else there is the added convenience of dealing with a knowledgeable Field Agent, such as myself, who can provide guidance and Honest Advice at a time and place convenient to you. So this year, no need to stand in ling lineups waiting to talk to someone who may not have the knowledge, the expertise or the time to answer all your important questions. Is the money locked up? If so for how long? What happens if I die? Does the plan allow for rising interest rates? This year have me pay you a visit and get all the facts you need to know to make an informed decision. REMEMBER, WE OFFER YOU VERY COMPETITIVE RATES AND QUALITY, AT HOME SERVICE, PLUS: -NO SET-UP OR ADMINISTRATION FEES -YOUR FUNDS ARE NEVER LOCKED IN -TRANSFERS ARE AVAILABLE -FREE CONSULTATION WITH NO OBLIGATION -INSTANT RECEIPTS! -INDUSTRY LEADING PAYOUT BENEFITS Unlike Banks and Trust Companies R.R.S.P.'s, Knights of Columbus is completely creditor proof...a very important feature in your long range planning.
