Council News Father Paul Wattson Council 8919 October / November 2014 Chaplain s Message Dear Brother Knights: Two things come to mind as we prepare for October. The first of course is Thanksgiving. Besides Turkey and all the fixings that go with it, we are also given the chance to stop and offer thanks for our many blessings. Gratitude is an important Christian virtue. When we truly take time each day and become aware of our many blessings, then how can we not offer a prayer of thanks? The very word Eucharist comes from the Greek word Eucharistia meaning thanksgiving. Each time we gather to celebrate as a Christian community, we offer our communal and our personal thanks. The second is that this month is dedicated to our Blessed Mother and the Holy Rosary. As Christian men and Knights, we are to be devoted to praying the Rosary. It is a powerful prayer. The Holy Father himself recently spoke about the Rosary and how praying it daily gives him such peace and strength. When we pray the Rosary, we reflect on the mysteries of Christ s life and seek the counsel of Mary to help us grow in holiness. Make the rosary part of your spiritual journey. You won t be disappointed. 3 Father Paul Wattson Council 8919 October / November 2014 Grand Knight s Report Greeting Brother Knights, fellow parishioners and of course our beloved Fr. Rob. Welcome to another fun filled issue of the Knights of Columbus Newsletter. I have a few things to mention so I`ll get right on it and you can get back to your life! A little humour never hurt anyone, I d say. Ha! Ha! On September 21, The Coats for Kids Pasta Fundraiser was held at The Family Centre in our Parish. The proceeds of this wonderful event go to purchase coats for kids. Schools in the area where given forms to fill out to assist the kids in need. This was a multi-council function, Knights from all over our district came to offer support and assistance to our Council. So many people and councils to thank. I don t know where to start. First, let me thank Jesus our Lord and Saviour. Thank you Jesus, son of God for a wonderful turnout and a beautiful day for it. Secondly, let me thank Fr. Rob, our Knights of Columbus Chaplin for giving as the go ahead with this event and the tremendous support, he threw our way, by getting the word out. Thank you Father Rob for putting our event on the church sign in front of the building, plus in the church bulletin, posters and making announcement for the event from the podium and letting us sell tickets at the front doors, the weekend before the event. Also, thank you to Dan Pergolesi, Deputy Grand Knight for going to area businesses and putting up posters. Dan also donated the cake mix for the cup cakes that was served for dessert. A very special thank you to Egle Pergolesi for making them. The cup cakes were very yummy, Mrs.Pergolesi!!! Now our kitchen staff for doing an awesome great job! A special thanks to Dave Orosz, Mike Charbonneau, John Sabga and Gary Major. You truly made the event a success. They cooked pasta, made sauce, salad and the buns. Everything was delicious and professionally prepared. The cooking team made our council shine that Knight! Please forgive me, too many people to name and thank. You know who you are. God Bless! This was a multi-council function and I must acknowledge the help and volunteerism from Council 9671 Victor C. Cote and 4375 Fr. Nicholas Point. Thank you to District Warden, Alan Sims for all your help and to Alice Wilds, the wife of Grand Knight Dave Wilds of Council 9671, who was our deserts distributor. Great job Alice and thank you to all your crew at 9671, who did an awesome job cleaning the tables and whatever else was need of them. Thank you to Frank Renaud, John Green, James Chute, D.G.K. and Gary Pruyn from 4375 Fr. Nicholas Point Council for all the wonderful and hard work in the kitchen. You were all great. Love to have you again! I would like to acknowledge our District Deputy, Jerry Marcotte and his beautiful wife, Susan for attending our event. Also, Sonny Sangamino, our District Insurance agent attended briefly to provide us with words of encouragement and to wish us luck. And of course, a very special thanks to our patrons and parishioners alike that came out to support this wonderful event. Sam DeRose, Grand Knight, 8919 God Bless us all! 3

Father Paul Wattson Council 8919 October / November 2014 District Deputy s Report Busy Times Ahead Friday September 19 th sees the conclusion of the Installation of Officers with Cardinal Stepanic Council s installation following the 6 pm Mass at St. Francis Croation Church. Thank you to all the executives, new and returning for taking part in your council s commissioning ceremony which is not dissimilar with what takes place in the Order at the state and supreme levels. Hopefully, the process of the installation is a reminder of the commitment one has made in taking on an executive position, the leadership that is entailed. All new candidates should exhibit the enthusiasm to work together with the entire executive in support of council programs. While speaking of leadership, taking a position in one s council can build one s leadership abilities and enhance one s creative skills in working with others. These skills can be carried to other avenues in one s life. A forthcoming great opportunity, not to be overlooked is the executive training and informational workshop that is scheduled for Saturday, September 27 th beginning at 9 am at St. Peter s Church Hall in Merlin. Councils in District 76 are encouraged to have several, 6 to 8, members of the executive as well as those assuming committee leadership positions. Please let me know how many will be attending from your council. In the continual realm of inviting Catholic gentlemen to join the order and with the knowledge of how active membership can enhance their life, the following degrees are scheduled for the area: Sun., Oct. 5th 1 st and 2 nd in Tilbury at 1 p.m. Oct. 19 th, 1 & 2 nd at Victor C. Cote at Good Shepherd Parish (St. Gregory Site) at 1 pm.; 3 rd Degree on Oct. 26 th at 1 pm at Good Shepherd. On All Souls Day, Sun., Nov. 2 nd at 4 pm will be the fitting annual memorial for our deceased members of all local councils 3 rd and 4 th Degree, CWL, Ladies Auxiliary, T.L.C. This will take place at the Venerable Fr. McGivney Site at Heavenly Rest Cemetery. Outside of New Haven CT., this is the next most impressive memorial to our founder and yet it may be new to some in the area. The 11 th annual K. of C. Night for Hospice is on Sat., Nov. 1 st and will be held at the Hospice facility on Empress Road. For tickets or further information contact St. Vincent de Paul Council, Don Lennox, GK The District 10 Soccer Challenge is tentatively scheduled for Sun. 5 th at the Croation Soccer Field, th Concession Rd. (just north of the 401). So far, in our district only Fr. Paul Wattson and Cardinal Stepanic Councils had a council level competition. Perhaps your council can still participate! Brothers, now is the time to order your council s Free Throw Championship Kits. It would be great to have all councils in our district take part! Remember, an active council inspires its members! 5 Deputy Grand Knight s Report Greetings Brother Knights, As mentioned by our Grand Knight and Coats for Kids Chairman Art Huggins, our council hosted a Pasta Fundraising dinner on September 21 st. I want to extend an heartfelt thank you to all Brothers within our council who were present at the dinner to assist, as well as to our Brothers from Fr. Victor C Cote Council 9671 and Fr. Nicholas Point Council 4375, who also provided their assistance to make this evening an outstanding event. I also thank all those who assisted in the perplanning for the dinner, as well as in the organization for the distribution of the coats. There will be a 1 st /2 nd Degree at Victor C. Cote Council on October 19, If you know of a gentleman who has either expressed an interest in the Knights, or who you believe would benefit from being a member, please reach out and contact a member of our executive for further follow-up. Our Parish will be hosting an Italian Night Fundraiser on October 25 th. In addition to a good meal, there will be live music and a Chinese Auction. Please spread the word to co-workers, family and friends to come out and support our parish. Saturday November 1 st will be the annual Knight of Columbus Hospice Fundraiser. If you are interested in further information, please contact Mike Agius for details. A correction to our DD Jerry Marcotte s article, the Prayers for the Deceased Members of the Knights of Columbus, CWL and Ladies Auxiliary, will be celebrated at Heavenly Rest Cemetery, on November 2 nd, at 4:00 PM. Fr. Gary Goyeau will preside over the prayers, with participation of the 4 th Degree from neighboring Assemblies, the names of each of our deceased members will be read aloud, and a candle will be placed at the base of Fr. McGivney s statue in their honour. On November 15 th, our Council will be hosting the next London West Diocesan Association (LWDA) meeting at Our Lady of the Atonement Family Center. There will be a mass at 9:00 AM inside the parish, with the meeting to begin at 10:00 AM in the Family Center. This meeting is not limited to executive, Directors or Chairs, but to the whole membership. If you would like more information on what is happening within the Knights, please mark your calendars and plan to attend. I continue to make this appeal to all council members; we are looking for members to join our existing programs. ( Examples, but not limited to are: Downtown Mission, Bingo, Cooking Team, Choir, Youth Competitions, Degree Team, St. Vincent De Paul.) We also are looking for new ideas to promote Charity and assistance to Church and Community. An example, in years past we raised funds for wheel chairs for individuals locally and abroad, but with a lack of a Chair, we did not support this event this year. We also held multiple blood donor drives at our Parish in honour of a deceased member of our council Lee Leveque. Due to limited participation we could no longer support holding this onsite, and asked members who were able to visit the local Red Cross to donate this life saving aid. Therefore, I ask each member to look deep within themselves and ask, am I able to donate a little time to one of these activities. I want to take this opportunity to wish all Brothers and your families a peaceful Thanksgiving. 6 Our council held the installation of officers on Sept. 2/14 after the 7:00pm mass and congratulations to all, also a special thanks to Jerry Marcotte, District Deputy and Al Sims, District Warden for a job well done. Council 8919 was asked to host a pasta fund raising dinner to raise funds for the coat for kids program, the dinner will be held on Sunday, Sept. 22 in the parish hall, the time is from 4:30 to 7:00 pm. I have taken the request forms for the coats to all of the grade schools, both public and catholic, in Forest Glade and also to St. Joseph s high school. I stated in my August report that a pasta fund raising dinner would be held sometime in November for our seminarian, but it is now cancelled, as James has decided to take a year off from the seminary to pursue a work experience and reflect on his next move. I still do not have a date for the annual Goodfellows paper drive, but as soon as I get it, I will let everyone know. It usually takes place at the end of November. Our annual Christmas dinner with all the trimmings will be held on December 6th. in the parish center, please plan on attending and supporting our council and enjoy time will fellow members, their wives and fellow parishoners Keith Campbell Council Director Comedy Corner The Amish are non-violent" people!" BUT IT PAYS TO KNOW GERMAN An Amish Farmer walking through his field notices a man drinking from his pond with his hand. The Amish Farmer shouts: "Trinken Sie nicht das Wasser, die Khe und die Schweine haben hineingeschissen!" Which means: "Don't drink the water, the cows and pigs have shit in it!" The man shouts back: "I'm a Muslim, I don't understand your gibberish. Speak English, Infidel!" The Amish Farmer shouts back in English: "Use two hands, you'll get more!"

Who are they? Hint: Members of our Council Free Newsletter to your for a correct guess Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Windsor Essex Central Council would like to thank the Knights for their support of our golf tournament through the hole sponsorship. The event was very successful raising $26, for our outreach programs. The Society has some good news bad news. We are blessed with an abundance of clothing donations from the community (good news). The bad news is we are running out of storage space, therefore we need help in sorting the donations. I would like to invite the Knights to put together a group which could volunteer to help sort clothing. I would be glad to arrange a convenient time to volunteer. If anyone is interested in helping please call Bernie Amlin ( ). God Bless Bernie 7

Chancellor s Report Please remember to keep in your prayers all those who are healing but, still in need of our prayers. Prayer for the Sick: Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore their health once again. Brother Tony Ellul who had a serious health issue continues to heal at home and is making steady progress. Please keep Tony and Emma in your prayers. Brother John Barron had a health issue and was in hospital for a few days but, is now home and recuperating nicely. We pray that he will continue to heal. Please keep John and Virginia in your prayers. In closing, please remember all who are healing but, still in need of our prayers, especially Charles Hesman and Jeanine Fontaine. George Lewsaw Chancellor What is charity to the Knights: It is helping the Needy, visiting the Sick and Disabled. Helping with Social functions, Giving Time for relief in disasters. Giving time to live and spread the Gospel. By being involved with the needs of the Parish. 8

Membership Who are the Knights? The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization with1.6 million members. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people. Why should one join the Knights of Columbus? As a Knight one can choose the projects with which to be involved within the community. What is more, the Order is dedicated to family life and the many benefits it offers. From insurance to scholarships, to service and social activities and programs, all are open to the whole family. What are the requirements? Membership requirements are that the person be a practical Catholic gentleman, who is 18 years of age or older. Dates and times for our next degrees: First and Second at Good Shepherd Parish Oct 19 and Third at Good Shepard Oct 26 London West Diocesan Association Meeting This meeting will be hosted at our Family Center On November 15 th All are encouraged to attend (It is in our back yard) 9

Youth The Knightsʼ of Columbus District Soccer competition will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at the Croatian Soccer Field at 8th Concession Road, South of the Windsor Airport. 8 Students from L.A Desmarais Catholic School (ages 10-13) 10 students from H.J. Lassaline Catholic School (ages 10-14) will compete for the District competition and the winners will move to the Regional Level this month. Make sure that they bring their score sheets on Saturday. Second place winners will compete in cases wherein the first place winners cannot make it to the competition. The competition will start at exactly 10:00 a.m. Thanks, Eduardo Right Rev Wilfrid Langlois Assembly There are many reasons for joining the 4 th degree Knights. It is a means of showing deeper commitment to the order and of practicing and expressing patriotism, which is the principal focus of the fourth degree. Membership is also an outward sign of expressing commitment to civic endeavor and to the Church, our bishops and priests as well as supporting the families of the deceased members. Additionally, becoming active in the fourth degree provides new opportunities for assuming leadership roles in the order. The fourth degree offers members throughout the order the opportunity to become public role models of respect for our various nations and flags. Membership also offers knights a very special means of displaying pride in the order through the colour guard. The swords, capes and chapeau, the colour corps is the most well known and visible public symbol of the order. In addition to exhibiting patriotism and pride in the order, the fourth degree, through the honour guard is an outstanding means of publically displaying solidarity with the church, our bishops and our priests. Councils and Assemblies remain close and enjoy greater co-operation when members of the fourth degree continue their active participation in their councils. Over the years it has almost become an accepted fact that fourth degree members contribute to the stability and solidarity of the order as a whole. Fourth degree knights tend to be active and suspension of their members is almost non-existent. A knight may be an active member of the fourth degree and not be a member of the colour guard. Membership is open to all third degree knights in good standing. 10

Life Matters Andrew J. Despins Field Agent Ask Eligible Men to Join This month, I want to address the growth of the Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All of our charitable works at the council, state, national and international level are thanks to our hard-working members. And more members equals more charity. We know that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for councils to get more men to join. We see these pushes often in March, in celebration of Founder s Day, and again in October. These drives are successful because brother Knights have increased visibility speaking or presenting during and after Masses and at special events. We must remember that we have a duty to ask each and every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the Church, the community and the Order. During the rest of the year, we often forget to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn t joined is because no one has asked him yet? When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don t forget our greatest fraternal benefit: our insurance program. This is often a selling point to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community, and they are proud to be members. As your professional Knights of Columbus Field Agent, I look forward to helping us grow in fraternity in any way that I can. 12
